INTRODUCTION |
Eric: Hi everyone, I'm Eric. |
Lyn: And I'm Lyn. |
Eric: And welcome to Must-Know Korean Sentence Structures, Season 1, Lesson 12. Asking About Ownership. |
Eric: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for asking about ownership. |
PATTERN |
Eric: For example, |
Eric: "Whose book is this?" |
Lyn: 이거 누구 책이에요? (igeo nugu chaegieyo?) |
Lyn: [slow] 이거 누구 책이에요? (igeo nugu chaegieyo?) |
Eric: The pattern for asking about ownership has 4 elements. First, a pronoun, "this one." |
Lyn: 이거 (igeo). |
Eric: Second, a pronoun, "who." |
Lyn: 누구 (nugu). |
Eric: Third, a noun, "book." |
Lyn: 책 (chaek). |
Eric: And last, a copula. |
Lyn: 이에요 (ieyo). |
Eric: Altogether, we have.. "Whose book is this?" |
Lyn: 이거 누구 책이에요? (igeo nugu chaegieyo?) [slow] 이거 누구 책이에요? (igeo nugu chaegieyo?) [normal] 이거 누구 책이에요? (igeo nugu chaegieyo?) |
Eric: To ask about ownership, you can use the pronoun… |
Lyn: 누구 (nugu) |
Eric: meaning “whose.” Then, simply identify the object and say the copula... |
Lyn: 이에요 (ieyo). |
Eric: If we want to specify what we are referring to, you can add a pronoun meaning "this one," "that one," or "that one over there" at the beginning of the sentence. Let’s hear the full sentence once again. |
Lyn: 이거 누구 책이에요? (igeo nugu chaegieyo?) |
Eric: So remember that to ask about ownership, simply say the pronoun "whose", the noun, plus the copula... |
Lyn: 이에요 (ieyo) |
Eric: Here is another example meaning, "Whose cellphone is that over there?" First, a pronoun, "that one over there." |
Lyn: 저거 (jeogeo). |
Eric: Second, a pronoun, "who." |
Lyn: 누구 (nugu). |
Eric: Third, a noun, "cell phone." |
Lyn: 핸드폰 (haendeupon). |
Eric: And last, a copula. |
Lyn: 이에요 (ieyo). |
Eric: Altogether we have.. |
Lyn: 저거 누구 핸드폰이에요? (jeogeo nugu haendeuponieyo?) [slow] 저거 누구 핸드폰이에요? (jeogeo nugu haendeuponieyo?) [normal] 저거 누구 핸드폰이에요? (jeogeo nugu haendeuponieyo?) |
Eric: "Whose cellphone is that over there?" |
[pause] |
Lyn: 저거 누구 핸드폰이에요? (jeogeo nugu haendeuponieyo?) |
Eric: How do you say - "Whose glasses are those?" To give you a hint, "glasses" in Korean is.. |
Lyn: 안경 (angyeong). [slow] 안경 (angyeong). [normal] 안경 (angyeong). |
Eric: “Whose glasses are those?” |
[pause] |
Lyn: 그거 누구 안경이에요? (geugeo nugu angyeongieyo?) [slow] 그거 누구 안경이에요? (geugeo nugu angyeongieyo?) [normal] 그거 누구 안경이에요? (geugeo nugu angyeongieyo?) |
[pause] |
Lyn: 그거 누구 안경이에요? (geugeo nugu angyeongieyo?) |
REVIEW |
Eric: Let's review the sentences from this lesson. I will give you the English equivalent of the phrase and you are responsible for shouting it out loud in Korean. Here we go. |
Eric: "Whose book is this?" |
[pause] |
Lyn: 이거 누구 책이에요? (igeo nugu chaegieyo?) |
[pause] |
Lyn: 이거 누구 책이에요? (igeo nugu chaegieyo?) |
Eric: "Whose cellphone is that over there?" |
[pause] |
Lyn: 저거 누구 핸드폰이에요? (jeogeo nugu haendeuponieyo?) |
[pause] |
Lyn: 저거 누구 핸드폰이에요? (jeogeo nugu haendeuponieyo?) |

Outro
|
Eric: Okay. That's all for this lesson. You learned a pattern for asking about ownership, as in.. |
Lyn: 이거 누구 책이에요? (igeo nugu chaegieyo?) |
Eric: meaning "Whose book is this?" |
Eric: You can find more vocab or phrases that go with this sentence pattern in the lesson notes. So please be sure to check them out on KoreanClass101.com. Thanks everyone, see you next time! |
