INTRODUCTION |
Eric: Hi everyone, I'm Eric. |
Lyn: And I'm Lyn. |
Eric: And welcome to Must-Know Korean Sentence Structures, Season 1, Lesson 11. Asking About a Person. |
Eric: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for asking about a person. |
PATTERN |
Eric: For example, |
Eric: "Who is the new manager?" |
Lyn: 새 매니저가 누구예요? (sae maenijeoga nuguyeyo?) |
Lyn: [slow] 새 매니저가 누구예요? (sae maenijeoga nuguyeyo?) |
Eric: The pattern for asking about a person has 4 elements. First, a noun phrase, "new manager.” |
Lyn: 새 매니저 (sae maenijeo). |
Eric: Second, a subject marking particle. |
Lyn: 가 (ga). |
Eric: Third, a pronoun, "who." |
Lyn: 누구 (nugu). |
Eric: And last, a copula. |
Lyn: 예요 (yeyo). |
Eric: Altogether, we have.. "Who is the new manager?" |
Lyn: 새 매니저가 누구예요? (sae maenijeoga nuguyeyo?) [slow] 새 매니저가 누구예요? (sae maenijeoga nuguyeyo?) [normal] 새 매니저가 누구예요? (sae maenijeoga nuguyeyo?) |
Eric: When you use this pattern, make sure to use one of the subject marking particles. In Korean, there are two. |
Lyn: 이 (i) and 가 (ga) |
Eric: You can pick one of them depending on the noun. Next, to form your sentence in the question form, the pronoun "who" should be followed by the copula |
Lyn: 이에요 (ieyo) or 예요 (yeyo) |
Eric: Once again, the full sentence is... |
Lyn: 새 매니저가 누구예요? (sae maenijeoga nuguyeyo?) |
Eric: So remember that you should end your sentence with… |
Lyn: 누구예요 (nuguyeyo)? |
Eric: to ask about someone. |
Eric: Here is another example meaning, "Who is the person over there?" First, a noun phrase "the person over there." |
Lyn: 저 사람 (jeo saram). |
Eric: Second, a subject marking particle. |
Lyn: 이 (i). |
Eric: Third, a pronoun, "who." |
Lyn: 누구 (nugu). |
Eric: And last, a copula. |
Lyn: 예요 (yeyo). |
Eric: Altogether we have.. |
Lyn: 저 사람이 누구예요? (jeo sarami nuguyeyo?) [slow] 저 사람이 누구예요? (jeo sarami nuguyeyo?) [normal] 저 사람이 누구예요? (jeo sarami nuguyeyo?) |
Eric: "Who is the person over there?" |
[pause] |
Lyn: 저 사람이 누구예요? (jeo sarami nuguyeyo?) |
Eric: How do you say - "Who is that man?" To give you a hint, "that man" in Korean is.. |
Lyn: 그 남자 (geu namja). [slow] 그 남자 (geu namja). [normal] 그 남자 (geu namja). |
Eric: “Who is that man?” |
[pause] |
Lyn: 그 남자가 누구예요? (geu namjaga nuguyeyo?) [slow] 그 남자가 누구예요? (geu namjaga nuguyeyo?) [normal] 그 남자가 누구예요? (geu namjaga nuguyeyo?) |
[pause] |
Lyn: 그 남자가 누구예요? (geu namjaga nuguyeyo?) |
