Debbie: 팀, 오늘은 무엇을 배울 거죠? What are we looking at in today’s lesson?
Tim: 오늘의 주제는 today’s topic is 뭐뭐에도 불구하고 meaning in spite of or even though. For example, 밥을 먹었는데도 불구하고 아직도 배가 고파요. I still feel hungry even though I already ate.
Debbie: Good example. Where does this conversation take place?

Debbie: Since they are close friends, the speakers will be speaking informal Korean.

DIALOGUE
팀: 수진아! 여기야! 비 많이 온다. 빨리 타.
수진: 와. 비가 이렇게 오는데도 불구하고 빨리 왔네! 어? 철수도 있네!
철수: (코를 골며) 드르렁. 드르렁.
팀: 철수는 잠들었어. 글쎄, 내가 많이 늦었는데도 불구하고 기다리고 있더라고.
철수: (잠꼬대하며) "아니. 짬뽕 말고 자장면!"
수진: 하하! 잠꼬대도 하네.
팀: 철수 요즘에 굉장히 바쁘다던데… 그럼에도 불구하고 나를 네 시간이나 기다린 거 보면 참 괜찮은 애야.
수진: 근데, 철수는 뭐하면서 너를 기다리고 있었어?
팀: 글쎄 자장면 세 그릇에 짬뽕 두 그릇 그리고 자장면 곱빼기까지 추가해서 먹고 있더라고.
수진: 뭐?? 자장면 세 그릇하고 짬뽕 두 그릇을 먹었는데도 불구하고 자장면 곱빼기까지! 와. 정말 대단하다!
철수: (잠꼬대하며) 여기 자장면 곱빼기 추가요!
수진: 하하하. 아직도 잠꼬대하네!
Tim: 이번엔 천천히 들어 보겠습니다.
Debbie: Let’s listen to it one time slowly.
팀: 수진아! 여기야! 비 많이 온다. 빨리 타.
수진: 와. 비가 이렇게 오는데도 불구하고 빨리 왔네! 어? 철수도 있네!
철수: (코를 골며) 드르렁. 드르렁.
팀: 철수는 잠들었어. 글쎄, 내가 많이 늦었는데도 불구하고 기다리고 있더라고.
철수: (잠꼬대하며) "아니. 짬뽕 말고 자장면!"
수진: 하하! 잠꼬대도 하네.
팀: 철수 요즘에 굉장히 바쁘다던데… 그럼에도 불구하고 나를 네 시간이나 기다린 거 보면 참 괜찮은 애야.
수진: 근데, 철수는 뭐하면서 너를 기다리고 있었어?
팀: 글쎄 자장면 세 그릇에 짬뽕 두 그릇 그리고 자장면 곱빼기까지 추가해서 먹고 있더라고.
수진: 뭐?? 자장면 세 그릇하고 짬뽕 두 그릇을 먹었는데도 불구하고 자장면 곱빼기까지! 와. 정말 대단하다!
철수: (잠꼬대하며) 여기 자장면 곱빼기 추가요!
수진: 하하하. 아직도 잠꼬대하네!
Tim: 이번에는 영어 번역과 함께 들어 보겠습니다.

Tim: Su-jin! Over here! It's pouring rain. Hurry up and get in!
수진: 와. 비가 이렇게 오는데도 불구하고 빨리 왔네! 어? 철수도 있네!
Su-jin: Wow. You came earlier despite the heavy rain! Eh? Cheol-su is here, too!
철수: (코를 골며) 드르렁. 드르렁.
Cheol-su: (heavily snores)
팀: 철수는 잠들었어. 글쎄, 내가 많이 늦었는데도 불구하고 기다리고 있더라고.
Tim: Cheol-su fell asleep. In fact, he was waiting for me despite the fact that I was so late.
철수: (잠꼬대하며) "아니. 짬뽕 말고 자장면!"
Cheol-su: (Talking in his sleep) No, I ordered black bean noodles, not spicy seafood noodles!
수진: 하하! 잠꼬대도 하네.
Su-jin: Ha ha! He's even talking in his sleep.
팀: 철수 요즘에 굉장히 바쁘다던데… 그럼에도 불구하고 나를 네 시간이나 기다린 거 보면 참 괜찮은 애야.
Tim: I heard Cheol-su's extremely busy these days. Despite that, he waited for me for over four hours; he's a good guy.
수진: 근데, 철수는 뭐하면서 너를 기다리고 있었어?
Su-jin: By the way, what was he doing while he was waiting for you?
팀: 글쎄 자장면 세 그릇에 짬뽕 두 그릇 그리고 자장면 곱빼기까지 추가해서 먹고 있더라고.
Tim: Well, he was eating three bowls of black bean noodles, two bowls of spicy seafood noodles, and he even ordered an extra large bowl of black bean noodles on top of that.
수진: 뭐?? 자장면 세 그릇하고 짬뽕 두 그릇을 먹었는데도 불구하고 자장면 곱빼기까지! 와. 정말 대단하다!
Su-jin: What? He ordered an extra large bowl of black bean noodles even after he ate three bowls of black bean noodles and two bowls of spicy seafood noodles! Wow. That’s amazing!
철수: (잠꼬대하며) 여기 자장면 곱빼기 추가요!
Cheol-su: (talking in his sleep) I'd like to add an extra large bowl of black bean noodles to my order!
수진: 하하하. 아직도 잠꼬대하네!
Su-jin: Ha ha ha! He still talking in his sleep!
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Debbie: So 수진, 철수 and Tim finally met up with each other.
Tim: 예, 결국에는요.
Debbie: 근데 철수는 자요? But 철수 fell asleep?
Tim: 많이 먹었잖아요. He ate a lot, that’s why.
Debbie: 하긴… 그럼 다음은 뭐죠? That’s true. Then what’s next for them?
Tim: 음… 아마도 어디를 가지 않을까요?
Debbie: Where? 어디요?
Tim: 그건 비밀입니다. That’s a secret. 여러분, 더욱 재밌고 흥미진진한 일이 벌어질 테니까 계속 들어 주세요. Please keep listening.
Debbie: 팀 씨, 개인적인 질문 해도 돼요? Tim, can I ask you a personal question?
Tim: Sure.
Debbie: Like 철수 from today’s conversation, 팀도 코 골아요? Do you also snore?
Tim: 예. Yes I do.
Debbie: Do you also talk in your sleep?
Tim: 아… 잠꼬대?

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Debbie: The first word is
Tim: 잠꼬대. Sleep talking
Debbie: Which is a noun, right? Then what’s the verb to talk in one’s sleep?
Tim: Umm we use the verb 하다 to do. So it becomes 잠꼬대를 하다.
Debbie: Can you give us some example sentences using 잠꼬대를 하다?
Tim: Sure. 지금 팀이 잠꼬대를 한다.
Debbie: 아… 팀이 지금 잠꼬대를 한다. Tim is talking in his sleep now. 근데 팀 씨는 정말 잠꼬대 해요? By the way Tim, do you really talk in your sleep?
Tim: 예. 특히 배가 고플 때 많이 해요. Yes, I talk in my sleep especially when I feel hungry.
Debbie: 배가 고플 때요? When you are hungry?
Tim: 응.
Debbie: 어떻게 잠꼬대를 해요?
Tim: 이렇게요. 밥 줘. 밥 줘. 밥 줘. Like this, give me food, give me food, give me food.
Debbie: 사실 저도 배고프면 그렇게 해요. Actually I also talk in my sleep whenever I am hungry.
Tim: 그럼 데비 씨, 다음 단어는 뭐죠? What’s the next word?
Debbie: 추가요. To add to one’s order.
Tim: 예. 여러분, 한국 식당에 가면 “추가요.”라는 말을 자주 들을 수 있을 거예요. If you visit Korea and go to any Korean restaurant, you will probably hear this phrase “추가요.” very often.
Debbie: So Tim, why don’t we role-play to show how it’s used? I will be the customer and you will be the waiter. Are you ready?
Tim: Yes. 저기요!
Debbie: 예.
Tim: 여기 짬뽕 한 그릇 추가요. Please add a bowl of spicy seafood noodles to my order.
Debbie: 예, 알겠습니다.
Tim: 저기요!
Debbie: 예.
Tim: 여기 자장면 곱빼기도 추가요. Please also add an extra large bowl of black bean noodles to my order.
Debbie: 예, 알겠습니다. 여기까지. 재밌네요. 그러면 표현이 간단하네요?
Tim: Umm…
Debbie: It’s a very simple expression.
Tim: 예. A common expression would be 여기 here plus the name of a dish plus 추가요 adding to my order. So altogether 여기 자장면 추가요, 여기 짬뽕 추가요, 여기 비빔밥 추가요, et cetera.
Debbie: Now we all know how to add things to our order in Korean. 고마워요, 팀. Now let’s move on to the lesson focus.
Debbie: The focus of today’s lesson is about the expression of in spite of, despite the fact, nevertheless, even if et cetera.
Tim: 한국말로 뭐뭐에도 불구하고.
Debbie: This expression 뭐뭐에도 불구하고 is not from Korean but it’s actually from the English expression in spite of.
Tim: 예, 맞아요. One of the most common expressions would be 그럼에도 불구하고, despite the fact.
Debbie: So Tim, can you tell us about the formation of the expression.
Tim: 예, 알겠습니다. The formation is verb stem plus 는데도 불구하고.
Debbie: Verb stem plus 는데도 불구하고 is that all?
Tim: Yes. For example, with the verb 가다 to go, 다 verb stem plus 는데도 불구하고 so it becomes 가는데도 불구하고 in spite of going. For example, 여행을 가는데도 불구하고 즐겁지 않아요.
Debbie: I don’t feel excited even though I am going on a trip. How about an example with the verb 오다 to come?
Tim: Okay 오다 is to come 오 verb stem plus 는데도 불구하고 so it becomes 오는데도 불구하고 in spite of coming. For example, 선생님이 오는데도 불구하고 팀은 계속 잡니다.
Debbie: Which means Tim keeps sleeping even though his teacher is approaching him. Great, how about an example with the verb 공부하다 to study.
Tim: Okay. 공부하다 is to study. 공부하 is the verb stem plus 는데도 불구하고 so it becomes 공부하는데도 불구하고 in spite of studying. For example, 한국어를 열심히 공부하는데도 불구하고 아직 한글을 못 읽습니다.
Debbie: Which means I can’t read Hangul yet despite all that hard studying in Korean.
Tim: Yes.
Debbie: 음...근데요, 팀. I have a question.
Tim: Yes.
Debbie: Can we use this expression with the past tense?
Tim: For example,
Debbie: Like 갔다 went, the past tense of 가다 to go?
Tim: Yes you can. The same rule applies here. The verb stem of the past form plus 는데도 불구하고. So with 갔다 went, 갔 verb stem plus 는데도 불구하고 so it becomes 갔는데도 불구하고 even though I went.
Debbie: I see, then how about 왔다 came, the past tense of 오다 to come?
Tim: Umm it’s the same 왔 verb stem plus 는데도 불구하고 so it becomes 왔는데도 불구하고 even though he came. Okay Debbie, it’s your turn. What’s the past tense of 공부하다 to study?
Debbie: 공부했다. Studied.
Tim: Great. Then what’s the verb stem of 공부했다?
Debbie: 공부했.
Tim: Good. Then what is even though I studied?
Debbie: Okay. 공부했 plus 는데도 불구하고 so it becomes 공부했는데도 불구하고 even though I studied. Am I correct?
Tim: Yes for example, 열심히 공부했는데도 불구하고 시험에 떨어지고 말았습니다.
Debbie: Which means even though I studied hard, I failed the test.
Tim: Yes.
