Joshua: Let’s have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson. |
VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE |
Joshua: The first phrase is |
Tim: 일박 이틀 동안. Meaning for one night and two days. Let’s break it down. 일박 이틀 means one night and two days |
Joshua: And 동안 means for. |
Tim: Yes. So altogether 일박 이틀 동안 means for one night and two days. For example, 저는 일박 이틀 동안 일본으로 여행을 다녀 왔어요. |
Joshua: Which means I took a trip to Japan for one night and two days. |
Tim: Great. I have one more. 저는 일박 이일 동안 세계 여행을 했어요. |
Joshua: Which means I took a world trip for one night and two days. What! A world trip for only one night and two days? 형, is that even possible? |
Tim: Everything is possible with my sample sentences. |
Joshua: That’s right. Well let’s take a look at the next word. |
Tim: Okay. 헤어지다 is a verb meaning to part from. |
Joshua: Yes this word 헤어지다 is often used to describe someone being parted from someone else. 형, example please. |
Tim: Okay what about this? 팀과 조슈아는 재회를 기하고 헤어졌어요. |
Joshua: Which means Joshua and Tim parted after promising to meet again. |
Tim: Right. I have one more. 팀은 부모님과 헤어졌어요. |
Joshua: Which means Tim parted from his parents. 왜요? 왜 부모님과 헤어졌어요? Why did you part from your parents? |
Tim: 그건요… 제가 부모님 말씀을 듣질 않았거든요. |
Joshua: What! Because you disobeyed your parents and broke their rules? |
Tim: 예, 맞아요. 여러분, 부모님 말씀 잘 들으세요. |
Joshua: And what’s our last word? |
Tim: 뭉치다 is a verb meaning to get together. |
Joshua: 예, 맞아요. This word 뭉치다 is often used to suggest getting together sometime in the near future. |
Tim: 예. |
Joshua: 형, 예문 부탁해요. |
Tim: 예, 알겠습니다. What about this? 조슈아, 우리 다시 뭉치는 거지? |
Joshua: Which means we will get together again some other time, right, Joshua? 물론이죠, 형. |
Tim: Aha okay, I have one more then. 그럼 다음에는 조슈아 집에서 뭉치자. |
Joshua: Which means, then let’s get together at Joshua’s place next time. What! 안 돼요. |
Tim: 왜요? Why not, why, why? |
Joshua: 그건 집 청소를 해야 해요. |
Tim: What! You have to clean your room first? 조슈아, 청소는 평소에 해야지요. You should clean your room regularly. |
Joshua: 예, 형. Now let’s move on to the lesson focus. |
Lesson focus
|
Joshua: The focus of today’s lesson is about the usage of 으 or ㄹ 때 which means when or while. |
Tim: 예. 한국어로 으 or ㄹ 때입니다. |
Joshua: 예. This expression is often used when talking about the time or duration when an action was or is ongoing which can be directly translated as when or while in English. |
Tim: 예, 맞아요. There are three ways to use this expression. They are first noun plus 때 meaning in the time period of noun. |
Joshua: Second, past tense plus 을 때 meaning when the subject did something in the past. |
Tim: Yes. And last, present tense plus ㄹ or 을 때 meaning when the subject does something. Unfortunately, we don’t have much time today. So we will only cover the last usage, present tense plus ㄹ or 을 때. |
Joshua: Yes listeners, please refer to the lesson notes of today’s lesson for more details on the others. Okay Tim, can you tell us about the conjugation rules? |
Tim: 예, 알겠습니다. The rule is verb stem plus ㄹ or 을 때. |
Joshua: Yes. Rule #1, attach ㄹ 때 if the verb stem doesn’t end with a 받침. In other words, if it ends in a vowel. |
Tim: Yes rule #2, attach 을 때 if the verb stem ends with a 받침. In other words, if it ends in a consonant. |
Joshua: Tim, examples please. |
Tim: 예, 알겠습니다. Let’s start with rule #1 where you attach ㄹ 때. Let’s use the verb 타다 which means to ride or to take. 타 is the verb stem, then we add ㄹ 때 so it becomes 탈 때 meaning |
Joshua: When I ride something. |
Tim: Right. Here is an example sentence. 바이킹을 탈 때 저는 눈을 감아요. |
Joshua: Which means I close my eyes when I ride on the Viking. 왜요? 왜 눈을 감아요? Why would you close your eyes? |
Tim: 그… 그거는요… 무서워서죠. |
Joshua: 형은 겁쟁이. |
Tim: What! 뭐라고요? Okay I have one more example. 저는 숙제를 할 때 종종 과자를 먹어요. |
Joshua: Which means I often have cookies when I do my homework. |
Tim: Yes I just used the verb 하다 which means to do. 하 is the verb stem, then we add ㄹ 때 so it becomes 할 때 meaning when I do something. So 숙제를 하다 becomes 숙제를 할 때 meaning when I do my homework. |
Joshua: 근데, 형. |
Tim: 응. |
Joshua: Why are you having cookies when you study? |
Tim: 아… 그건요 이상하게 들릴지 모르지만 공부할 때마다 배가 고파져요. |
Joshua: Whenever you study, you feel a bit hungry? |
Tim: Umm… |
Joshua: 저도 그래요. Me too. |
Tim: Like Tim and like Joshua. |
Joshua: Okay next, an example for rule #2 where you attach 을 때. What about with the verb 먹다 which means to eat? |
Tim: Okay. 먹다 means to eat. 먹 is the verb stem and we add 을 때 so it becomes 먹을 때 meaning when I eat something. Here is an example sentence. 짬뽕을 먹을 때 젓가락을 사용하세요. |
Joshua: Which means please use chopsticks when you eat spicy seafood noodles. |
Tim: 예. 맞아요, 여러분. 자장면과 짬뽕을 먹을 때에는 젓가락을 사용하세요. |
Joshua: 형, let’s make one more example sentence for our listeners. |
Tim: Okay. |
Joshua: What about with the verb which means to get a shot. |
Tim: Okay. 주사를 맞다 means to get a shot. 주사 맞 is the verb stem, then we add 을 때 so it becomes 주사 맞을 때 meaning |
Joshua: When I get a shot. |
Tim: Right. Here is an example sentence. 주사를 맞을 때는 팔에 힘을 빼야 해요. |
Joshua: Which means you should relax your arms when you get a shot. You are right, Tim. |
Tim: Okay well, that’s all for today’s lesson and all for this Lower Intermediate Season 2 series. |
Outro
