| Tim: 아… 진실 게임. Let’s break it down. 진실 means the fact or the truth. |
| Joshua: 게임 means a game or a bet. |
| Tim: Yes, so altogether 진실 게임 means a game called Truth or Lie. |
| Joshua: By the way, 형은 이 진실 게임 좋아해요? |
| Tim: 예, 정말 정말 좋아해요. I will tell you more about how much I love this game. I am the king of Truth or Lie. I only speak the truth. |

| Joshua: This expression ㅁ/음으로써 is an adverb marker such as by which is used to indicate the tool, method or a purpose used for achieving an end. Tim, can you tell us about the formation first? |
| Tim: 예, 알겠습니다. The formation is verb stem plus ㅁ or 음으로써 by doing something. |
| Joshua: Yes. Rule #1 attach ㅁ으로써 if the verb stem doesn’t end with a 받침. In other words, if it ends in a vowel. |
| Tim: Yes. Rule #2 attach 음으로써 if the verb stem ends with a 받침. In other words if it ends in a consonant. |
| Joshua: 형, 예문이요. |
| Tim: 예, 알겠습니다. Let’s start with rule #1 where you attach ㅁ으로써. Let’s use the verb 하다 which means to do. 하 is the verb stem, then you add ㅁ으로써 so it becomes 함으로써 meaning |
| Joshua: By doing something. |
| Tim: Right. Here is an example sentence. 조슈아는 봉사활동을 함으로써 할아버지 할머니들을 도왔어요. |
| Joshua: Which means Joshua helps the elderly by doing volunteer work. Thank you Tim for the good example sentence of me. |
| Tim: You are welcome. I have one more. What about this? 팀은 노래방에서 노래를 부름으로써 기분전환을 했어요. |
| Joshua: Which means Tim refreshed himself by singing a song at a karaoke. Ah Tim just used the verb 부르다 to sing. |
| Tim: Yes. 부르다 means to sing. 부르 is the verb stem, then we add ㅁ으로써 so it becomes 부름으로써 meaning by singing a song. Often we say 노래를 부름으로써 기분전환을 하다 to refresh oneself by singing a song. |
| Joshua: I see. Okay now let’s make some examples for rule #2 where you attach 음으로써. How about the verb 먹다 which means to eat? |
| Tim: 예, 알겠습니다. 먹다 means to eat. 먹 is the verb stem, then we add 음으로써 so it becomes 먹음으로써 meaning |
| Joshua: By eating something. |
| Tim: Right. Here is an example sentence. 조슈아는 가끔 케이크를 먹음으로써 기분전환을 해요. |
| Joshua: Which means Joshua sometimes makes himself feel better by eating a cake. How did you know about that, Tim? |
| Tim: I just know. |
| Joshua: How about with the verb 풀다 which means to recover from fatigue. |
| Tim: 아… 풀다. 풀다 means to recover from fatigue. 풀 is the verb stem and we add 음으로써 so it becomes 풀음으로써 meaning by recovering from fatigue. |

| Tim: Okay what about this? 팀은 피로를 풀음으로써 녹음에 다시 집중할 수 있게 되었어요. |
| Joshua: Which means after recovering from fatigue, Tim was able to concentrate on recording again. That’s a good example. |
