INTRODUCTION |
Mihyeon: 안녕하세요, 여러분. 미현입니다. |
Junsu: Hi I am Junsu. |
Hyunwoo: 안녕하세요. 선현우입니다. I Study Korean as Soon as I Get Up. That was the title, by the way. |
Junsu: Everyone should do that. |
Mihyeon: 이상한데요. |
Hyunwoo: Well it’s an ideal title. |
Mihyeon: 정말 이런 사람 있을까요? |
Hyunwoo: I do. I do study Korean as soon as I get up. |
Junsu: Really! |
Hyunwoo: No, not really, sorry. 그렇지만 the grammar is what we are going to learn how to say in Korean today. So what are we going to learn today? |
Junsu: We are going to learn how to say as soon as you do something or as soon as something happens. |
Hyunwoo: That’s right. 미현씨. |
Mihyeon: 네. |
Hyunwoo: 이거를 한국어로 어떻게 말하죠? |
Mihyeon: 뭐뭐 하자마자라고 이야기하죠. |
Hyunwoo: 네, 맞습니다. 그런데 우리 오늘 배울 내용으로 넘어가기 전에. Before we go into what we are going to learn today, let’s briefly go over what we learned in the last lesson. Do you remember Mihyeon 기억나세요? |
Mihyeon: 배우긴 배웠는데 기억이 안 나요. |
Junsu: Do you really not remember or was that just an example? |
Mihyeon: 진짜... |
Hyunwoo: 미현씨, 진짜로 기억 안 나요? 미현씨가 가르쳐 주셨잖아요. |
Mihyeon: 예문이에요, 예문. |
Junsu: So she said, she did learn but she didn’t remember. Also Hyunwoo, can you give us another example? |
Hyunwoo: Yeah actually there is a perfect example. A lot of our listeners are very active in the comments section and a lot of them ask questions like, is this sentence correct and often times, I answer 맞기는 맞는데 이게 더 자연스러워요 which means it is correct grammatically that is but this is more natural. So you can say, if something is correct, it is correct but you’d rather say this way instead of saying 맞는데 you can say 맞기는 맞는데. It means it is correct but so was that good enough? |
Junsu: Yeah sure. I think the listeners that couldn’t remember would be satisfied by now. |
Hyunwoo: I hope so. That’s the power of reviewing. And don’t worry if you don’t remember the past grammar points that we covered just like Mihyeon didn’t. You know, you can always – sorry Mihyeon. You know you can always listen to the lessons again or you can go to the learning center and use the grammar bank to view all the grammar points that were introduced so far in our lessons to check how much you have learned and if you choose a specific grammar point, there is a section that introduces all the lessons that used that grammar point or introduced that grammar point in them. So if you go to the learning center, you can check out the grammar points first and then find some specific lessons that are related to the grammar points. So just like Junsu introduced, we are going to learn how to say, as soon as you do something or as soon as something happens. 그러면 오늘의 대화를 들어 보시죠. 미현씨, 오늘 대화는 어디에서 누구누구 사이에 일어나는 대화예요? |
Mihyeon: 네, 학교 안에서 정우하고 미현이가 만났어요. 오늘은 민수가 없네요. 둘은 친구 사이니까 반말을 쓰고 있어요. |
Hyunwoo: So okay let’s listen in. |
DIALOGUE |
(1)Jeongho: Yeah, I saw him, but I didn't talk with him at all. |
(2)미현: 진짜? 이상하네... 아까는 너한테 꼭 할 얘기가 있다고 했는데. |
(2)Mihyeon: Really? That's strange. Because earlier, he said he had something he had to tell you. |
(3)정호: 그래? 보자마자, 그냥 인사하고 다른 데로 갔어. |
(3)Jeongho: Did he? As soon as he saw me, he just said hi and went somewhere else. |
(4)미현: 진짜? 흠... |
(4)Mihyeon: Really? Hmm.... |
(5)정호: 넌 이제 어디 가? 집에 가? |
(5)Jeongho: Where are you headed now? Going home? |
(6)미현: 응. 수업 끝났어. 근데 집에 가자마자 아르바이트 가야 돼. |
(6)Mihyeon: Yeah, I just finished my classes. But as soon as I go home, I have to go to my part-time job. |
(7)정호: 그래? 수고해! 난 집에 가자마자 샤워부터 해야겠다! 오늘 너무 덥지 않냐? |
(7)Jeongho: You do? Good luck! I'm going to take a shower as soon as I go home! Isn't it too hot today? |
(8)미현: 하하. 응. 그래 그럼 잘 가. 안녕! |
(8)Mihyeon: Haha. Yeah. Okay, then, see you. Bye! |
(9)정호: 그래. 너도 수고해! |
(9)Jeongho: Okay. Have a nice day! |
POST CONVERSATION BANTER |
Mihyeon: 음...민수가 수상한데요? |
Junsu: Something smells a bit fishy. I think Minsu is avoiding something. |
Hyunwoo: Yeah and Jeongho and Mihyeon are wondering the same thing but they are not talking that much about Minsu anymore. They are talking about what they are going to do as soon as they get home and how do you say as soon as you do something in Korean? |
Mihyeon: 뭐뭐 하자마자 |
Junsu: And we are going to cover this in the grammar point later on but for now what Mihyeon said was, the verb 하다 plus 자마자. |
Hyunwoo: That’s right. 하자마자. 네, 미현씨, so what do you do as soon as you get home from work? |
Mihyeon: 네, 저는 집에 가자마자 컴퓨터를 먼저 켜요. |
Junsu: So what do you do as soon as the computer is on? |
Mihyeon: 컴퓨터를 켜자마자 뉴스를 읽어요. |
Junsu: So what do you do as soon as you are done with reading the news? |
Mihyeon: 네, 저녁 식사를 준비해요. |
Hyunwoo: So I hope our listeners figured from the conversation between Mihyeon and Junsu that Mihyeon kept using the grammar pattern 자마자 at the end of her verbs and we are going to cover the construction and the grammar points later on. Okay so let’s go into today’s vocabulary. |
VOCAB LIST |
Hyunwoo: 미현씨, 첫 번째 단어는 뭐죠? |
Mihyeon: 인사하다 |
Junsu: 인사하다 |
Mihyeon: 인사하다 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 인사하다 [natural native speed] |
Junsu: What does this word mean? |
Mihyeon: 안녕하세요. 안녕. 이게 인사예요. 그래서 이런 말을 하는 것, 인사하다입니다. |
Junsu: Yeah so it means to say hello or goodbye and the phrase that we mentioned just before 어디 가 is also a kind of 인사 which means greeting. So 인사하다 means to greet. |
Mihyeon: 현우씨는 가게 같은데 가면 인사 잘 하세요? |
Junsu: Hyunwoo, do you greet people well when you go into stores? |
Hyunwoo: Actually I do. 항상 저는 안녕하세요 제가 먼저 말해요. 가게에 들어가면 사람들이 어서 오세요라고 해 주잖아요. 그런데 even when they don’t say anything to me like even when they don’t even say 안녕하세요, 어서 오세요 I say 안녕하세요. 그래서 저는 인사 잘 하는 것 같아요. |
Mihyeon: 네. 착한 어린이네요. |
Junsu: You are a good kid. |
Hyunwoo: Thank you. 그리고 다음 단어는요? |
Mihyeon: 다르다 |
Junsu: 다르다 |
Mihyeon: 다르다 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 다르다 [natural native speed] |
Junsu: 이건 무슨 뜻이에요? |
Mihyeon: 같지 않다라는 뜻이에요. |
Junsu: Not the same. So it means to be different. |
Hyunwoo: 네, 맞아요. 미현씨, 예문 좀 들어 주시겠어요? |
Mihyeon: 준수씨하고 저는 성격이 많이 달라요. |
Junsu: Junsu and I have very different personalities. |
Hyunwoo: 어, 성격이 어떻게 달라요? 준수씨는 성격이 아주 좋잖아요. |
Mihyeon: 네. 어...그렇게 말하시면 저는 나쁜 사람이 되네요. |
Hyunwoo: And what else is different between you and Junsu? 또 뭐가 달라요? |
Mihyeon: 준수씨하고 저는 키가 달라요. |
Junsu: Yeah I am taller I wish. So Mihyeon and I are not of the same height. |
Hyunwoo: Yeah Mihyeon is quite tall. |
Junsu: And I am short? |
Hyunwoo: I mean you are average but Mihyeon is tall right, taller than average. 네, 그 다음 단어로 넘어가 볼까요? 그 다음 단어는 뭐죠, 미현씨? Tall 미현씨, 키 큰 미현씨? |
Mihyeon: 네, 키 큰 미현입니다. 다음 단어는 끝나다. |
Junsu: 끝나다 |
Mihyeon: 끝나다 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 끝나다 [natural native speed] |
Junsu: And this word means to finish, to end. Could you give us some examples? |
Mihyeon: 흠...그 남자랑 끝났어요. |
Junsu: Ah I am done with him. |
Mihyeon: 우리 녹음 끝나고 맛있는 거 먹으러 갈까요? |
Junsu: Shall we go eat something good after we are done with the recording? |
Hyunwoo: 네, 미현씨, 가요. Junsu has got some work to do but we can go. |
Junsu: Oh come on. |
Hyunwoo: Junsu you just turned red. Is it because you are upset or is it because it’s hot? |
Junsu: A little bit of both but I think it’s because I am a little bit more mad. |
Hyunwoo: Well I was hoping that you would say it’s just hot here and Mihyeon, what’s to be hot in Korean? That’s the next word. |
Mihyeon: 덥다 |
Junsu: 덥다 |
Mihyeon: 덥다 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 덥다 [natural native speed] |
Junsu: Yeah and it’s really hot in here. |
Mihyeon: 아 정말 덥다. 현우씨, 문 열어 주세요! |
Junsu: He is suffocating us. Help. |
Hyunwoo: 제가 더 더워요 지금. And if you have noticed 덥다 it’s an irregular verb and we call this a ㅂ irregular verb because the verb stem ends in ㅂ but the ㅂ often drops and becomes something else when it’s conjugated with other suffixes. So let’s introduce some possible variations of this verb Mihyeon. How do you say because it’s hot? |
Mihyeon: 더우니까 |
Junsu: Although it’s hot. |
Mihyeon: 더워도 또는 덥지만. |
Hyunwoo: It was hot. |
Mihyeon: 더웠어요. |
Hyunwoo: I think it will be hot. |
Mihyeon: 더울 것 같아요. |
Hyunwoo: It’s not hot. |
Mihyeon: 안 더워요 또는 덥지 않아요. |
Hyunwoo: Okay I think that’s enough. 예, 그렇지만 우리는 열심히 수고하고 있습니다. And that’s the next word. |
Mihyeon: 수고하다 |
Junsu: 수고하다 |
Mihyeon: 수고하다 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 수고하다 [natural native speed] |
Hyunwoo: 네. 미현씨, 더워도 수고하세요. |
Mihyeon: 수고하면 이따가 현우씨가 쏘시는 거예요? |
Hyunwoo: 네, 물론이죠. 둘이 같이 가요. |
Junsu: Come on. |
Mihyeon: 빨리 녹음을 끝냅시다. |
Hyunwoo: 네. What does 수고하다 mean Junsu? |
Junsu: Literally it means to go through a lot of pain and put a lot of effort into but actually it’s not used in this way. It’s just a way to express gratitude and support. |
Hyunwoo: Exactly. So whenever we are done with recording, now we say to each other |
Mihyeon: 수고하셨습니다. |
Junsu: 수고하셨습니다. |
Hyunwoo: Okay 미현씨, 단어 설명 수고하셨고요. 문법 포인트를 볼까요? Let’s go into the grammar points of today. |
Lesson focus
|
Junsu: We think you are probably quite familiar with this grammar point by now but let’s look a bit more into the construction. So you take the verb stem and add 자마자 at the end of it. The tense is expressed in the verb that follows this construction. So it’s quite simple. |
Hyunwoo: So whatever you want to say, look up the word in the dictionary, take the verb stem and add 자마자 and it becomes as soon as you do something, as soon as somebody does something or as soon as something happens. 오늘 대화에서는 어떻게 쓰였죠, 미현씨? How was it used in today’s dialogue? |
Mihyeon: 정호씨가 이야기했어요. 보자마자, 그냥 인사하고 다른 데로 갔어. |
Junsu: As soon as he saw me, he just said hi and went somewhere else. |
Mihyeon: 미현씨가 이야기했네요. 집에 가자마자 아르바이트 가야 돼. |
Junsu: I have to go to my part time job as soon as I get home. |
Mihyeon: 또 정호씨가 난 집에 가자마자 샤워부터 해야겠다라고 이야기했어요. |
Junsu: I am going to take a shower as soon as I get home. |
Hyunwoo: Okay so let’s look at some more examples. For example, how do you say, I fell asleep as soon as I closed my eyes. That’s me these days. |
Mihyeon: 눈을 감자마자 잠들었어요. 현우씨, 요즘 눈을 감자마자 잠이 드신다고요? |
Hyunwoo: Yeah these days, after I close my eyes, I fall asleep within 5 seconds I think. 그러니까 눈을 감자마자 잠든다고 할 수 있죠. |
Mihyeon: 진짜 눈 감자마자 바로 주무시네요. |
Hyunwoo: 네. |
Mihyeon: 부러워요. |
Junsu: 어, 저는 눕자마자 잠들어요. |
Hyunwoo: So Junsu falls asleep as soon as she lies down. That’s better than me. |
Junsu: A bit faster. |
Hyunwoo: Yeah about 4 seconds faster. |
Mihyeon: 저도 빨리 하는 거 있어요. |
Hyunwoo: 뭔데요? |
Mihyeon: 저는 커피를 아주 좋아하거든요. 그래서 밥을 먹자마자 커피를 마셔요. |
Junsu: Oh I don’t drink coffee as soon as I finish eating but instead, I eat ice cream. |
Hyunwoo: Are we really going to go somewhere and eat something good as soon as we finish recording 끝나자마자 맛있는 거 먹으러 갈 거예요? |
Mihyeon: 네. 아까 간다고 약속하셨잖아요. |
Outro
|
Hyunwoo: Okay, thank you Mihyeon and Junsu for the great lesson and we will see you next time. |
Mihyeon: 여러분, 수고하셨습니다. |
Junsu: 미현씨도 더운데 수고하셨어요. |
Hyunwoo: 네, 현우씨도 더운데 수고하셨습니다. Sorry, sorry about that and we will see you next time. Bye bye. |
Junsu: 안녕히 계세요. |
