Mihyeon: 안녕하세요. 미현입니다.
Hyunwoo: And 제 이름은 현우입니다. I Wish You Would Make It. 오늘도 정말 재미있는 대화가 기다리고 있습니다. We have a very interesting conversation waiting for us today as well.
Mihyeon: 네, 맞아요. 그럼 바로 들어 봐요.
Hyunwoo: Wait! Wait! Wait! Slow down. 잠깐만요. Before we go into the conversation, please tell us what today’s focus is.
Mihyeon: 네. 아, 맞다. 오늘의 초점.
Hyunwoo: Today’s focus
Mihyeon: 오늘의 초점은 뭐뭐 하기를 바라다.
Hyunwoo: I hope or I wish. This is what we are going to learn to say in Korean in this lesson. So let’s listen to this continued dialogue between the reporter and Ms. Kim.
DIALOGUE
(1)리포터: 지난 주에 보도해 드렸던 김씨가 도박을 그만두기로 결심했다고 합니다. 제가 인터뷰를 해 보았습니다. (김 씨에게) 도박을 그만두셨다고요?
(2)김씨: 네.
(3)리포터: 계기가 뭐예요?
(4)김씨: 사실은... 더 재미있는 것이 생겼어요.
(5)리포터: 네? 도박보다 더 재미있는 것이 뭔지, 말씀해 주세요.
(6)김씨: 네... 영어 공부요!
(7)리포터: 네?! 영어 공부요?
(8)김씨: 몰랐는데 영어 공부가 참 재미있어요. 도박보다 훨씬 흥미로워요!!
(9)리포터: 아... 정말 좋은 소식입니다. 열심히 해서 좋은 결과가 있기를 바랍니다!!
(10)김씨: 네. 저도 빨리 공부해서, 해외 카지노에 갈 수 있기를 바라요!
(11)리포터: 아니, 김 여사님... 김 여사님!

(1)Reporter: Mrs. Kim, who we brought to you last week has decided to quit gambling. I had an interview with her. (To Mrs. Kim) You quit gambling?

(2)Mrs.Kim: Yes.
(3)리포터: 계기가 뭐예요?
(3)Reporter: What was your reason?
(4)김씨: 사실은... 더 재미있는 것이 생겼어요.
(4)Mrs.Kim: Actually.. There's something more interesting.
(5)리포터: 네? 도박보다 더 재미있는 것이 뭔지, 말씀해 주세요.
(5)Reporter: Please tell us, what is more interesting than gambling?
(6)김씨: 네... 영어 공부요!
(6)Mrs.Kim: Okay.. Studying English!
(7)리포터: 네?! 영어 공부요?
(7)Reporter: Huh?! Studying English?
(8)김씨: 몰랐는데 영어 공부가 참 재미있어요. 도박보다 훨씬 흥미로워요!!
(8)Mrs.Kim: I never knew, but it's very interesting. Much more fun than gambling!

(9)Reporter: Well... That's good news. I wish you success in your studies!

Hyunwoo: So she has a bigger purpose of studying English.
Mihyeon: 네. 해외 카지노에 가고 싶어서 영어 공부를 열심히 하고 있어요.
Hyunwoo: She is going global although I am not sure if that’s a good thing or a bad thing.
Mihyeon: 저도 잘 모르겠어요.
Hyunwoo: But whatever the purpose is, I think learning a new language is always a wonderful thing and to help our listeners learn some new words in Korean, let’s go to the vocab.
VOCAB LIST
Hyunwoo: What’s the first word 첫 번째 단어는?
Mihyeon: 보도하다
Hyunwoo: To report
Mihyeon: 보도하다 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 보도하다 [natural native speed]
Hyunwoo: Yeah this verb 보도하다 is when a reporter is reporting on TV or a journalist is writing articles in the newspaper. So you don’t say 보도하다 when you are reporting to your boss. In that case, you say
Mihyeon: 보고하다
Hyunwoo: 보도하다 and 보고하다. Okay so what’s the next word 두 번째 단어는?
Mihyeon: 결심하다
Hyunwoo: To make up one’s mind.
Mihyeon: 결심하다 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 결심하다 [natural native speed]
Hyunwoo: Yeah 결심하다 is to make up one’s mind. So the New Year, year 2009 is less than a month away 한 달도 안 남았어요. So the New Year comes around and you will make a lot of 결심 for the New Year.
Mihyeon: 네, 저도 몇 가지 결심을 했어요.
Hyunwoo: Are you going to tell us what they are?
Mihyeon: 아니요.
Hyunwoo: Okay 알고 싶지 않아요. I don’t want to know.
Mihyeon: 네, 말하고 싶지 않아요.
Hyunwoo: 네, 알겠어요. 다음 단어는요? The next word is
Mihyeon: 계기
Hyunwoo: A beginning, a cause, a momentum.
Mihyeon: 계기 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 계기 [natural native speed]
Hyunwoo: 계기 is something that makes you start something new or change your way of thinking or just about any reason or cause that changed your actions or thoughts.
Mihyeon: 여러분은 한국어를 공부하게 된 계기가 뭐예요?
Hyunwoo: Yeah what is the reason or the cause that made you start studying Korean.
Mihyeon: 무슨 계기로 한국어를 시작했어요?

Hyunwoo: News
Mihyeon: 소식 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 소식 [natural native speed]
Hyunwoo: 네. I like this word a lot, 소식. It’s always exciting to hear some 소식.
Mihyeon: 만약에 나쁜 소식이면?
Hyunwoo: Oh oh you mean what if it’s a bad 소식 bad news but still you know 나쁜 소식 could become 좋은 소식 eventually. So I like hearing some 소식 from those whose 소식 I don’t know. 그리고 I have good news. 좋은 소식 있어요.
Mihyeon: 아, 진짜요? 뭐예요?
Hyunwoo: The good news is, it’s time to go to the grammar.
Mihyeon: 에이, 뭐예요.
Hyunwoo: Let’s go to the grammar.
Hyunwoo: So what’s today’s grammar point once again?
Mihyeon: 뭐뭐 기를 바라다
Hyunwoo: Yeah so something, something 기를 바라다, 기 바라다 is translated as I hope or I wish and verb 바라다 takes a direct object in Korean whereas in English one wishes for something or hopes for something. So the something, something 기 is the nominalized form of the verbs and you hope for the nominalized part, something, something 기를 바라다. 예를 들어서 what is to come?
Mihyeon: 오다
Hyunwoo: And how do you say to hope you will come?
Mihyeon: 오기를 바라다
Hyunwoo: And how do you say I hope you will come?
Mihyeon: 오기를 바라요.
Hyunwoo: And 기를 is often contracted to 길.
Mihyeon: 오길 바라요.
Hyunwoo: Okay so how was it used in today’s dialogue?
Mihyeon: 리포터가 말했어요. 열심히 해서 좋은 결과가 있기를 바랍니다.
Hyunwoo: The reporter said, I wish you success in your hard studying.
Mihyeon: 그리고 김씨가 저도 빨리 공부해서, 해외 카지노에 갈 수 있기를 바라요!라고 했어요.
Hyunwoo: 네. And Ms. Kim also said, I wish to study fast and go to a foreign casino and she is such a passionate person. Okay 미현씨, 예문을 몇 개만 더 들어 주세요. Please give us some more examples.
Mihyeon: 저도 그러기를 바라요.
Hyunwoo: I hope so too.
Mihyeon: 그런 일이 없기를 바라요.
Hyunwoo: I hope something like that wouldn’t happen.
Mihyeon: 행복하길 바라.
Hyunwoo: Oh there goes a TV drama line. It means I wish you happiness.
Mihyeon: 네, 맞아요. 드라마에 많이 나오는 말이에요.
Hyunwoo: I wish you happiness too. 저도 미현씨가 행복하길 바라요.
Mihyeon: 현우씨, 어디 가세요? 갑자기 왜 이런 얘기 해요?
Hyunwoo: No, I am not going away. I just want you to wish you happiness. 그러면 안 돼요? Am I not allowed to do that?
Mihyeon: 아니에요. 저도 현우씨 행복하길 바라요.
Hyunwoo: 네. 감사합니다, 미현씨.

Hi Hyobin,

Thank you for posting. To answer your question: ~기(를) 바라다 is a more 'stronger' expression of wanting something (it literally means 'really hoping for something', whereas 았/었/였으면 좋겠다 literally means 'would be good if something was~'. So while they are used to mean 'want something', they do have slightly different meanings.

Thanks for commenting. Yes, you can omit 기를 바라다, native Koreans will have no problem understanding what you did not say. But you cannot pronounce 바랄 게 as 바랠 게. You could say 바래.

Thank you for your questions.

1. This one is difficult for people in Korea too. Technically, 바라다 means to want something, and 바래다 means for something to fade. So to ask what you want, you would ask, 무엇을 바라나요(what do you wish for)? However, in recent years people have started using 바래 to express your wish for something to happen.

Having said that, grammatically, 바라나요 would be the correct version.

2. The difference between 재미있다 and 흥미롭다 would be that 재미 means something fun or enjoyable. 흥미 means interest. So 재미있다 would be 'fun', while 흥미롭다 would be 'interesting'.

Although -하기를 바래 is more commonly used, especially, in spoken Korean, the correct way to write it is -하기를 바라.

"~하기로"는 "~할 예정이다" 라는 의미에요.
