INTRODUCTION
Keith: Hi. Welcome to KoreanClass101.com, the fastest, easiest and most fun way to learn Korean. My name is Keith Kim and I am joined by…
Seol: 안녕하세요. 윤설입니다. My name is Seol Yun and we’re about to introduce you to a new fun…
Keith: And powerful language learning system. The core of this new approach is a radio talk show format which is entertaining, while at the same time educational.
Seol: You’ll also have fun learning Korean and we’ll have you speaking Korean from the very first lesson.
Keith: Yeah, with our revolutionary breakdown approach, even if you’re completely new to Korean you’ll be able to speak some Korean by the end of this first lesson.
Seol: Each lesson is hosted by one native Korean teacher, that’s me, and one native English speaking teacher, fluent in Korean, that’s Keith.
Keith: The dialogues are all recorded by professional voice actors who are, of course, native Koreans.
Seol: The lessons center surround current practical dialogues you hear in Korea every day.
Keith: In addition to the dialogue, we break down the pronunciation of vocabulary words and phrases so you can understand them and say them right away.
Seol: We’ll also cover cultural insights, experiences about living and traveling in Korea, and tips on using Korean you just won’t find in a textbook.
Keith: Now, the audio lesson you’re about to listen to is just one part of our powerful system, as these lessons were designed to be used together with accompanying material on our site, KoreanClass101.com.
Seol: On our site you can find bonus audio tracks, Lesson Notes, quizzes and other learning tools for each and every lesson.
Keith: There you can sign up for a free lifetime account and try out all of the powerful tools to get you speaking right away.
Seol: So, Keith, let’s show them how it works?
Keith: Alright, very good idea.
Seol: This is a fast and fun lesson that is useful in lots of situations.
Keith: To see the phrases we’re going to cover today, stop by KoreanClass101.com, get your free account and view the Lesson Notes PDF while or after you listen. And if you’re listening on an iPod, click the center button or touch the screen twice and you can see the phrases there.
Seol: In this lesson we are going to meet somebody. And if we meet somebody, we need to eat. What do you want to eat, Keith?
Keith: 불고기, Korean barbeque.
Seol: Sounds great.
Keith: And if you want to know a little bit more about 불고기, take a look at our Lesson Notes. There we have a cultural insight section that gives you a detailed explanation on lots of topics we cover in the audio lesson.
Seol: This lesson’s PDF Lesson Notes has a detailed write-up on 불고기.
Keith: And don’t forget the words and phrases that come out in this lesson. Okay, now I'm excited. We sit down and we order 불고기. So the food comes out, we pick up our chopsticks and we’re ready to put it in our mouths…
Seol: Wait, wait, wait!
Keith: What? What’s up?
Seol: In Korea, there’s a phrase you say before you eat. Before you eat you have to say 잘 먹겠습니다.
Keith: This phrase literally means “I will eat well”, but it’s basically used to thank someone for a meal.
Seol: Yeah, it’s like saying “Since you’re paying for the meal, I’ll eat well. Thanks”. It’s used for people that provide the meal for you.
Keith: Great explanation. And just like that, when we give essential vocabulary word or phrase, we give you an explanation of how to use it. We explain the exact situations the phrases are used and the proper usage, so you don’t embarrass yourself. But you know what else we do?
Seol: The pronunciation?
Keith: Yeah, the proper pronunciation so you can start speaking just like Seol over here.
Seol: Yeah.
Keith: So we’re going to take a look at a revolutionary break down system. So, Seol, can you repeat that phrase for us? And for those of you listening, don’t forget to repeat after Seol.
VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Seol: 잘 먹겠습니다.
Keith: One time slowly?
Seol: 잘 먹겠습니다.
Keith: And now one more time fast, please.
Seol: 잘 먹겠습니다.
Keith: And just like that, when we give essential vocabulary words or phrases in our lessons, we always break it down just like that. One time fast for you to hear the natural speed.
Seol: One time slow so that you can fully grasp the pronunciation.
Keith: And one more time fast so that you can repeat it at full speed. You’ll be speaking like a native Korean speaker with our system in no time.
Seol: There is also a review track that provides you with Korean words, time to repeat and practice them, and then the meaning.
Keith: You can try that out if you visit our website. All right, so now that we got the pronunciation perfected, we have our PDF lesson notes so we know exactly when and where to use these phrases. All right, so now we’re ready to eat. And we take a bite… Mmm, it’s so good.
Seol: Yeah, and this is something our listeners can say when they’re going out to eat.
Keith: All right, so Seol, what can our listeners say to say “delicious”?
Seol: 맛있어.
Keith: One more time slowly, please?
Seol: 맛있어.
Keith: And one more time at natural speed.
Seol: 맛있어.
Keith: And that’s actually casual language, isn’t it?
Seol: Yeah, you can use 맛있어 with really close friends, but with people you meet for the first time or maybe your teachers you have to be politer.
Keith: Yeah, so to make 맛있어 politer, it’s pretty easy, right?
Seol: Yeah, all you have to do is just add 요 at the end. So instead of 맛있어 we have 맛있어요. 맛있어요. [slowly - broken down by syllable] 맛있어요. [natural native speed]
Keith: And a very important thing to know is that Korean places a lot of emphasis on politeness levels.
Seol: Yeah, there’s certain situations where you have to use polite language.
Keith: Exactly, that’s why we offer both casual language and polite language in our Lesson Notes. The Lesson Notes’ PDF contains the lesson dialogue in both formal Korean, informal Korean, and the English translation, so you can compare the different politeness levels. It also contains the Romanization in case you haven’t mastered 한글 yet.
Seol: You know, Keith, looking at the dialogue while listening at the same time really improves reading fluency, while improving listening ability.
Keith: Not just the dialogue, but vocabulary words and phrases that we covered in our audio lessons are also included in our PDF Lesson Notes, so that you can remember every single word that comes out in the lesson.
Seol: You have to have these lesson notes.
Keith: Yeah, I'm telling you. You need to stop by KoreanClass101.com, sign up for a free lifetime membership and pick up the Lesson Notes PDF. It’s really the most effective and most convenient way to study.
Seol: Okay, I want to move on to our last phrase. After everyone has finished eating, you have to say thank you again for the meal, right?
Keith: How do you say “thank you for the meal”?
Seol: 잘 먹었습니다.
Keith: And that literally means “I ate well”. Can you break that down for us?
Seol: 잘 먹었습니다. [slowly - broken down by syllable] 잘 먹었습니다. [natural native speed]
Keith: Wow, that sounds a lot like the phrase we said before we started eating.
Seol: Yeah, there’s only one syllable change.
Keith: Okay, what’s “I will eat well”?
Seol: 잘 먹겠습니다.
Keith: And what about the one after we finished eating, “I ate well”?
Seol: 잘 먹었습니다.
Keith: If you use our system in the Premium Learning Center, we have one of the best places to practice this and that is…
Seol: Line by Line Audio.
Keith: One of the most powerful tools for improving pronunciation fast. There, you can listen to our phrases as many times as you need to.
Seol: You can hear us again and again.
Keith: So with our line by line feature, you have the ability to rapidly improve your listening comprehension, listen to the native Korean speakers in bite-sized sentences so you can perfect every single aspect of your Korean listening comprehension.
Seol: Repeat after the speaker to improve your pronunciation. And don’t forget the recording software. You can perfect your pronunciation too.
Keith: Right. On the same page, you can record your voice side by side to the native Korean speakers. This is the perfect way to compare your pronunciation with the native Korean speakers.
Seol: You can keep practicing and recording your voice.
Keith: Yeah, and you can keep recording until you refine your pitch and intonation, build your fluency and perfect your pronunciation.
Seol: I actually had fun recording my voice for the first time.
Keith: You like recording your own voice, that’s why.
Seol: Maybe.
Keith: But yeah, hearing your voice for the first time is actually pretty interesting. Hearing yourself speak in another language… it’s surreal. It’s pretty fun, isn’t it?

Outro

Seol: Speaking of fun, did you guys have fun?
Keith: I did. And I think we all had a good time.
Seol: Wow, this sounds great. And one more thing related to this lesson, a bit of cultural insight.
Keith: Sure, great idea. What do you have in mind?
Seol: It’s about tip. Do we tip in Korea?
Keith: In Korea? There’s no tip.
Keith: All right, so I think that’s going to do it. Thank you for listening and remember to stop by our website.
