Seol: This conversation is between two people meeting for the first time. |
Keith: And when two people meet for the first time? |
Seol: They introduce themselves. |
Keith: Very simple. All right, and this conversation takes place at? |
Seol: A party. |
Keith: And the conversation is between two strangers meeting for the first time so… |
Seol: We’ll be using polite language. |
Keith: So this dialogue is something that you can use whenever you meet someone for the first time. Ok, let’s listen to the conversation. |
DIALOGUE |
(1)현우: 안녕하세요. 저는 현우입니다. 처음 뵙겠습니다. |
(2)경은: 안녕하세요. 저는 경은입니다. 처음 뵙겠습니다. |
Seol: 영어로 한 번 더. |
현우: 안녕하세요. 저는 현우입니다. |
Keith: Hello. I'm Hyunwoo. |
현우: 처음 뵙겠습니다. |
Keith: It's nice to meet you. |
경은: 안녕하세요. 저는 경은입니다. |
Keith Hello. I'm Gyeong-Eun. |
경은: 처음 뵙겠습니다. |
Keith: It's nice to meet you. |
POST CONVERSATION BANTER |
Keith: Today we’re working on self-introductions. Now this is the standard greeting you use when you meet someone for the first time. If you need to listen to the dialogue again, we have it again at the end of this audio file so that you reinforce everything we went over in the lesson. |
Seol: We also have the dialogue-only track. |
Keith: Yeah, which is great to download and listen to over and over, so you can perfect your listening comprehension and reinforce sentence structures. |
Seol: We also have line by line audio in our learning center which is a great way to listen to one line at a time until your perfect your pronunciation. |
Keith: Memorize the words and phrases… |
Seol: And master the patterns so you can use the same lines in conversation. |
VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE |
Keith: All right, so, Seol, let’s take a look at this dialogue and break it down. What do we have first? |
Seol: 안녕하세요. |
Keith: “Hello”. Can you break it down for us? |
Seol: 안녕하세요. [slowly - broken down by syllable] 안녕하세요. [natural native speed] |
Keith: And this is a polite way to say “hello”. It works in the day, afternoon, night, just whenever you say “hello” in English, you say… |
Seol: 안녕하세요. |
Keith: In Korean. |
Seol: And if you want to be more casual, you can say 안녕. |
Keith: Yeah, if you noticed, it’s the first two syllables of the word 안녕하세요. Seol, can you break that down? |
Seol: 안녕 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 안녕 [natural native speed] |
Keith: And who do you use 안녕 with? |
Seol: With your close friends and family. |
Keith: That’s right. Essentially, it’s towards people that you don’t feel the need to respect. And it also has another meaning, doesn’t it? Other than “hi.” |
Seol: Yeah, it also means “bye” in casual language. |
Keith: That’s right. So using 안녕 can be used to say both “hi” and “bye.” And in both cases, these are use in casual situations. But as we are meeting for the first time, we need to be polite. So what’s the polite way to say “hello” again? |
Seol: 안녕하세요. |
Keith: Great. And, Seol, what do we have next? |
Seol: 저는 현우입니다. |
Keith: “I am Hyunwoo.” Seol, let’s break it down and start with the first part. The first part is… |
Seol: 저 |
Keith: A humble form of saying “I”. And immediately after that is… |
Seol: 는 |
Keith: A topic marking particle. Now the topic marking particle is essential in Korean grammar. It’s used in nearly every single sentence you hear. |
Seol: To really master this, stop by our Grammar Bank which is your one-stop-shop for all your grammar needs. |
Keith: It will even direct you to lessons that focus on that grammar so you can learn the grammar in detail and in context. Okay, now that we have our topic set, “I”, 저, we can introduce our names. So, Seol, what’s your name? |
Seol: My full name is Seol Yun, but in Korean I say 윤설. |
Keith: Right, the order is reversed in Korean. Family name first, then the given name. |
Seol: And after my name I say 입니다. |
Keith: Which is a conjugated form of the copula, and that’s pretty much equivalent to the English verb “to be”. So in this sentence it’s translate as “am”. So, Seol, can you introduce yourself again? |
Seol: 안녕하세요. 저는 윤설입니다. |
Keith: Great. And if our listeners wanted to introduce themselves, they can just follow this pattern and simply replace the name. So for me I can say 안녕하세요. 저는 Keith입니다. |
Seol: A great tool that we offer is the review track. The review track has the lesson’s vocabulary words and phrases that are specifically designed to have you speaking right away with proper pronunciation. |
Keith: This is the perfect tool to use to perfect your pronunciation. Okay, now what do we have lastly. |
Seol: We have 처음 뵙겠습니다. |
Keith: What’s the first part? |
Seol: 처음 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 처음 [natural native speed] |
Keith: This means “first”. And what’s the second part of that phrase? |
Seol: 뵙겠습니다. |
Keith: Can you break that down for us? |
Seol: 뵙겠습니다. [slowly - broken down by syllable] 뵙겠습니다. [natural native speed] |
Keith: And this means “meeting”. So literally we have “first meeting”. |
Seol: That’s the literal translation but it’s used the same as “How are you?” It’s just a phrase we use. |
Keith: Yes, a phrase used when you’re meeting someone for the first time because it’s a first meeting. So can you give us your introduction one more time, Seol? |
Seol: 안녕하세요. 저는 윤설입니다. 처음 뵙겠습니다. |
