Seol: 독일어요.
Keith: German.
Seol: 독일어에서 온 아르바이트라는 단어가 한국에서는 part time하고 똑같은 뜻이에요.
Keith: Yeah. So this is a loanword from German. Well, why is there a loanword from German 독일이랑 한국은 어떤 사이였어요?
Hyunwoo: 독일어에서 일본어로 아르바이트라는 단어가 간 다음에 그 일본어를 한국인들이 쓰기 시작한 것 같아요.
Keith: So it’s actually a loanword from Japanese.
Hyunwoo: Japanese 그렇죠.
Keith: So it’s a German word that went to Japan 그 다음에 한국으로 갔죠.
Hyunwoo: 네
Keith: So now it’s a Korean word 아르바이트.
Hyunwoo: 그런데 요즘에는 이것을 짧게 줄여서 뭐라고 말하는지 아세요 설씨?
Seol: 알바
Hyunwoo: 알바. 아르바이트하면 너무 길잖아요. 그래서 알바라고 해요.

Keith: Kind of like Jessica Alba. 두 번째 단어는 뭐예요?
Hyunwoo: 학생
Keith: Young man or young lady 이거는 원래 학생 a student 이잖아요.
Hyunwoo: 그렇죠. 그런데 사람을 부를 때 젊은 사람을 부를 때 음...몇 살까지 학생이라고 부르시겠어요?
Seol: 글쎄요. 이거 되게 재밌는 얘기가 있는데요. 예전에는 사람들이 저를 ‘학생!’ 이렇게 불렀어요. 어느 순간 ‘아가씨!’ 이렇게 부르더니 요새는 ‘새댁!’ ‘아줌마!’라고도 불러서...그런데 한 스물셋? 스물둘? 어려보이고 화장 안 하고 책가방 메고 있는 사람들을 보면 보통 ‘학생!’ 이렇게 부르죠.
Keith:So when you look young, when you look like a student up to about university student, older people will call you student 학생 and in English, it’s kind of like young man or young lady and again in Korean, Korean is all about titles. So if you don’t know someone, instead of saying you, you say
Hyunwoo: 학생
Keith: 학생
Hyunwoo: 보통 학생이라고 부르는데 조금 애매하면 저기요라고 부르죠. 그런데 아가씨라고 부르면 기분 좋지 않아요?
Seol: 아가씨는 괜찮아요.
Hyunwoo: 괜찮죠?
Keith: 아가씨 means a young lady. So 어떤 것이 더 좋아요? 학생? 아가씨?
Seol: 저 같은 경우는 학생이 더 좋아요. 왜냐면 학생은 젊고 어리고 가능성이 많은 그런 좋은 이미지를 가진 단어잖아요.
Hyunwoo: 아가씨가 어때서요?
Seol: 아가씨는...아가씨도 좋아요.
Keith: So don’t forget to stop by and call her 학생 student. All right our next word is
Hyunwoo: 좀
Keith: A bit or a little 이거는 원래 어떤 말이에요?
Seol: 조금을 줄여서 좀 이렇게 말해요.
Keith: Same thing but 오늘의 대화에는 어떻게 나왔어요?
Hyunwoo: 안내 좀 해 줘.
Keith: Guide a bit please do. So please show her around a bit. And what’s the difference between 안내 좀 해 줘 and 안내 해 줘?
Hyunwoo: 음...어떻게 다를까요? ‘안내 좀 해 줘.’라고 하면 ‘안내 해 줘.’ 보다는 좀 부드러워지죠.
Seol: 같은 명령어인데 ‘안내 해 줘.’는 정말 명령하는 투로 안내 해, 안내 해 줘인데 ‘안내 좀 해 줘.’ 이러면 부탁하는 그런 뉘앙스가 들어가서 안내 좀 해주겠니, 어 부탁하는데 좀 이것 좀 해줄래? 이런 좀 부드러운 느낌인 것 같아요.
Keith: So this is a speech softener. Korean is all about being a little more indirect, not being too direct. So instead of 안내 해 줘 guide her around 안내 좀 해 줘 please guide her around. Be a little, it’s asking a little favor being a little nicer.
Hyunwoo: 네, 그리고 방금 Keith가 말한 것 처럼 ‘좀’이라고도 하고 ‘쫌’이라고도 하죠.
Keith: Yes both pronunciations are acceptable 좀, 쫌.
Hyunwoo: 마찬가지로 조금
Seol: 쪼금
Hyunwoo: 둘 다 괜찮죠.
Keith: All right. Can we have a couple of example sentences?
Hyunwoo: 밥 좀 먹어.
Keith: Eat a bit and let’s take 좀 out.
Hyunwoo: 밥 먹어.
Keith: Eat. It’s so direct, it’s so in your face but the other one is
Hyunwoo: 밥 좀 먹어.
Keith: Come on, eat a bit, eat a little. Next example.
Hyunwoo: 나 도와줘.
Keith: Help me and with 좀.
Hyunwoo: 나 좀 도와줘.
Keith: Help me a bit. It’s being a little nicer.
Hyunwoo: 얘기하자.
Keith: Let’s talk 이것 좀 들으면 어떤 느낌이 들어요? What do you feel when you hear this 얘기하자?
Hyunwoo: 설, 얘기하자.
Seol: 무서워요.
Hyunwoo: 무섭죠?
Keith: Yeah it’s a little, man, what you got to say, he is so direct in my face.
Seol: 강하고 예 맞아요.
Keith:Direct in your face? Let’s talk.
Hyunwoo: 그런데 얘기 좀 하자 이렇게 말하면요?
Seol: 덜 무서워요.
Keith: So a little less not so scary, not so bad, not so direct, not so in your face and it’s okay. It’s like oh okay 얘기 좀 하자 okay let’s talk. All right and our last word is
Hyunwoo: 사이
Keith: This actually means between but 오늘의 대화에는 어떻게 나왔어요?
Seol: 아는 사이
Keith: Acquaintances but literally it’s knowing relationship and it’s 아는 knowing 사이 relationship 그런데 relationship은 다른 단어도 있잖아요.
Seol: 관계
Keith: And that also means relationship as well but the difference between 관계 and 사이 is that 사이 is between two parties and it’s more about the ambience, the atmosphere, the energy. The synergy between two parties. How is it, is it good, is it bad and maybe we are making it a little more complicated than it has to be but this is a very important word. It has a different nuance than the word 관계 relationship. 관계 is a definition of two parties and their relationship but 사이 is the actual relationship. What kind of energy, what kind of feelings you guys have. So my mom used to always tell me 사이좋게 놀아 you know 사이좋게 with good relationships, with good energy, with good harmony and play.
Hyunwoo: Keith, have you heard of the website called Cyworld. Cyworld actually means 사이좋은 world. So the Cyworld means 사이 plus world.
Keith: The world working together in perfect harmony and synergy. And it’s also used in much more simpler context as well but let’s go over a couple of simpler examples.
Seol: 저는 현우씨랑 사이가 좋아요.
Keith: My relationship with 현우 is good.
Seol: Keith는 현우씨랑 사이가 나빠요.
Keith: Keith and Hyunwoo’s relationship is not good. It’s bad.
Hyunwoo: 아니에요. 우리는 사이가 좋아요. 우리는 같이 일하는 사이거든요.
Keith: Ah that was good 같이 일하는 사이. Our relationship is working together.
Seol: 어, 저도 Keith랑 같이 밥 먹는 사이예요.
Keith: I am in a relationship with Keith where we eat.
Hyunwoo: 밥만 같이 먹어요? 같이 일도 하는 사이죠?
Seol: 일도 하고 같이 노는 사이예요.
Hyunwoo: 같이 노는 사이
Keith: 노는 사이. We are in a relationship where we hang out, where we play. All right, next we have our grammar point.
Seol: 겠다
Keith: Can we have an example sentence?
Seol: Keith, 롯데월드에 간다고? 재미있겠다.
Keith: 재미있겠다. It must be fun. Now this 겠다 is a non-final sentence ending. It’s a speaker’s supposition or conjecture. Now this is used when you hear a piece of information. Then you give your feedback on it and it’s like it’ must be so. I suppose so. So let’s have a couple of example sentences.
Seol: 어 저기 케익이 있어. 맛있겠다.
Keith: It must be delicious.
Hyunwoo: 아 저 사람 좀 봐. 춥겠다.
Keith: Look at that person. He’s got to be cold.
Hyunwoo: 여기 레스토랑 좀 봐. 정말 비싸겠다.
Keith: Look at this restaurant, it must be expensive.
Seol: 어 내일 시험이 있다고? 공부 열심히 해야겠다.
Keith: You have an exam tomorrow, you must study hard and this in English can also be translated as it must be I guess or probably. 그럼 오늘의 대화에는 어떻게 나왔어요?
Seol: 지혜가 소연이 서점에서 아르바이트를 한다는 얘기를 듣고 우와 책 많이 읽을 수 있겠다!라고 말하는게 하나 나와요.
Keith: I guess you can read a lot of books.
Seol: 그래서 또 재미있겠다라고 말하는 것도 나와요.
Keith: It must be fun or it’s probably fun. I guess it’s fun.
Outro
Keith: So I think we are done over here. All right, 수고하셨습니다.
Seol: 수고하셨습니다.
Hyunwoo: 수고하셨어요.
Keith: 이거 끝나고 뭐 하실 거예요?
Hyunwoo: 저는 친구 만나러 갈 거예요.
