Seol: Then what are you going to explain? |
Keith: No nothing. Just I like computers but what I find interesting is gigabyte is just pronounced as Giga. |
Hyunwoo: 근데 영어에서는 gig이라고 하지 않아요? |
Keith: Yeah we also say gig as well in English. |
Hyunwoo: 네, 그래서 한국어에서도 짧게 기가라고 해요. 기가바이트, it’s like five syllables 그래서 너무 길어서 기가, 100기가, 200기가, 200기가 그렇게 말해요. |
Keith: Another thing that I found interesting was that laptop computer is called |

Keith: Yeah so when I think of notebook, thinking of a book like an actual notebook 공책 you know but it’s a laptop. |
Seol: 왜냐하면 노트북처럼 얇고 가지고 다닐 수 있잖아요. 공책처럼 말이에요. 그래서 노트북 컴퓨터라고 해요. |
Hyunwoo: 네, 한국어로 노트북이라고 하면 we don’t think of a real notebook. |
Seol: No. |
Hyunwoo: We think of a computer, laptop computer 그리고 아직 picture video vocab #3 사무실 편을 아직 못 보신 분들은 가서 보시면 laptop에 대한 이야기를 보실 수 있어요. |
Keith: All right. So what else can we talk about? |
Hyunwoo: 하드 |
Keith: Hard drive. |
Hyunwoo: 한국어에서는 하드 드라이브라고 아무도 말 안 하죠. 그냥 하드. |
Keith: So if you said hard drive, would people understand? |
Hyunwoo: 네, 이해할 거예요. 이해하는데 너무 시간이 오래 걸려요. 하드 드라이브 아 피곤해. 그냥 하드. |
Keith: Just a shortened version, just like Giga. |
Hyunwoo: 네 |
Keith: Okay so let’s move on to non computer words. The one word that I really want to talk about is 깜짝. |
Seol: 어머 깜짝이야. 웬일이야. |
Keith: There it means surprise, astonishment but then we also have a verb for surprise. |
Seol: 놀래다 |
Keith: To be surprised. |
Seol: 깜짝 놀래다 |
Keith: To be surprised, no… |
Seol: This is kind of a set phrase right? |
Hyunwoo: 맞아요. |
Keith: So let’s give it without 깜짝. |
Seol: 어 놀랬어. 웬일이야? |
Keith: Oh I was surprised. What are you doing here? |
Seol: 깜짝이 없으면 어색해요. 그냥 안 놀래요. 깜짝 놀래요. |
Keith: So you need a phrase with it. It has to be together. |
Seol: 맞아요. |
Hyunwoo: 네, 그냥 놀라다라고 하면 조금 |
Seol: 조금 놀랬어요. |
Hyunwoo: 예, plain해요. 약해요. It’s weak. 그런데 깜짝 놀라면 if you look at the way it’s pronounced, 깜짝이라고 하니까 좀 강하죠 it’s strong. |
Keith Strong pronunciation yeah. |
Hyunwoo: 깜짝. There is something that comes to my mind 지난번에 길을 걷고 있었어요. I was walking on the street. 그런데 제가 모르는 아가씨가 길을 걷고 있는데 친구가 뒤에서 갑자기 민지야! 하고 등을 두드렸어요. |
Keith: So you saw someone walking on the street and some girl screamed out 민지 and hit that girl on the back and what happened? |
Hyunwoo: 그 민지씨 그 아가씨가 정말 큰 목소리로 깜짝이야!라고 했는데 그 목소리에 제가 더 깜짝 놀랬어요. 갑자기 깜짝이란 단어가 it’s so strong. |
Keith: So you got surprised by the word surprise. |
Hyunwoo: 네, 맞아요. 너무 놀래가지고 주변을 돌아봤던 기억이 나요. It’s that strong a word, 깜짝. |
Keith: Well at least the pronunciation is. So if you are very surprised, you use this word but then what I find interesting here is that you use 깜짝 놀라다 surprise as a set phrase and you also say 깜짝이다 surprise is, the copula. |
Hyunwoo: 네. |
Keith: 그 차이는 뭐예요? |
Seol: 별로 없어요. |
Keith: Yeah pretty much the same thing. Your choice of words. |
Seol: 맞아요. |
Keith: 그런데 깜짝이야는 I think it’s more, it’s shorter. So you are actually generally very surprised. |
Seol: 맞아요. 그러니까 의식하지 않고 튀어 나오죠. 오, 깜짝이야! |
Keith: Yeah. It just comes out. |
Hyunwoo: 네, 그런데 what’s interesting about it is you can’t say it in the past tense. 깜짝 놀라다는 깜짝 놀랐다라고 할 수 있는데 깜짝이다는 깜짝이였어라고는 잘 말하지 않아요. 그러니까 조심하셔야 돼요. |
Keith: Okay let’s move on. What do we have for our grammar point? |

Keith: 너무 짧은 것 같죠? Right? |
Seol: 오늘 dialogue에서는 민호가 지혜를 보고 지혜씨 맞죠라고 얘기했어요. |
Keith: Okay let’s go over that really quickly. Now this 지요 can also be pronounced as |
Seol: 죠 |
Keith: It’s just the two vowels combined into one and 지요 becomes 죠. So it’s used when asking a question for agreement or confirmation. So if you go up to someone, you don’t really know them such as in today’s conversation. Minho doesn’t know 지혜. They are meeting for the first time. 소연 hooked him up with the computer geek. Yeah go to 용산 with him but they don’t know each other. So what do they say? |
Seol: 지혜씨 맞죠? |
Keith: And that verb 맞다 to be right, to be correct and then 맞죠 right, right. It’s kind of translated as right, correct. |
Hyunwoo: 그러면 여기서 예문을 더 보는 게 좋겠죠? |
Seol: 네 |
Keith: Okay so let’s give a couple of examples then. |
Hyunwoo: 자 제가 선생님이에요. 학생들한테 여러분 숙제 했죠? |
Keith: You did your homework, right? You did your homework, correct? Here the teacher is asking for agreement or confirmation. |
Hyunwoo: 네 그리고 이제 제가 Keith를 사람들에게 소개하고 있어요. 여러분 Keith Kim 알죠? |
Keith: Everybody, you know Keith Kim, right? Got to have the computer geek part in there. |
Seol: Keith가 그렇게 유명해요? |
Hyunwoo: 유명하죠. Keith, the computer geek. |
Keith: 한국말로 없으니까. You got to say it in English right? |
Hyunwoo: 네. |
Keith: Okay so let’s have a couple of examples when it’s made as a statement because it can be used as the same way right, confirmation, agreement. |
Hyunwoo: 맞아요. 아까 제가 말했던 문장들 숙제 했지요에 대해서 학생들은 선생님 당연하죠. 숙제 했죠. |
Keith: Of course we did. We did the homework and there it’s used as what we said as a question, confirmation and agreement. You did your homework right? Yes we did the homework, of course confirming what the question was. A lot of times in our podcast actually, we say |
Hyunwoo: 그렇죠. |
Keith: That’s right and that 죠 at the end is confirming what we are just talking about. |
Hyunwoo: 네, 맞아요. 원래는 그렇지요인데 짧게 그렇죠라고 말을 많이 해요. 그렇죠? |
Seol: 네, 그렇죠. |
Keith: Actually you are going to be hearing this grammatical phrase a lot. So remember to read up on it on the PDF. There we have a full detailed write up on that over there. Okay let’s move on to our next one. |
Hyunwoo: 그 다음 문법 포인트는 ㄴ다고예요. |
Keith: Now this is indirect discourse kind of sounds like a fancy word. It just means reported speech. |
Hyunwoo: 네, 맞아요. 여기서 민호가 지혜에게 이렇게 말하죠. 노트북 산다고? |
Keith: You said you are going to buy a laptop? |
Hyunwoo: 네 |
Keith: Yeah but this 다고 it comes from something right? |
Hyunwoo: 네 뭐뭐한다고 말하다에서 왔어요. |
Seol: 근데 말하다는 생략된 거예요? 없어졌어요? |
Hyunwoo: 예, 없어졌어요. |
Keith: So you can think of it this way. 다고 is acting as quotation marks, the last two quotation marks and you say whatever the person said, the reported speech, close the quotation marks and then you are supposed to say 말했죠 or 말했어요 but you can take that whole part out and because it’s assumed. So let’s have a couple of examples. |
Keith: 설, 결혼한다고? |
Keith: You said you are getting married. Now let’s have what it’s supposed to be, what it should be the long way. |
Hyunwoo: 설, 너 결혼한다고 말했어? |
Keith: You said you are getting married. Now the word 말하다 said is actually there but the other one, the shorter one, it’s not there. |
Hyunwoo: 네. 또는 말만 빼서 설, 너 결혼한다고 했어? |
Keith: It’s a same thing. Just dropping 말. |
Hyunwoo: 네. |
Seol: 아니, 안 했어. |
Hyunwoo: 아 말 안 했어? |
Seol: 응 |
Hyunwoo: 잘못 들었나 보다. 소문이었나 봐. Maybe it was just a rumor. |
Keith: Okay let’s go over the construction of this really quickly. So this is used with action verbs, active verbs and then whatever in the sentence it is, oh you said you are doing this. So that doing is the action. So let’s have a sample sentence. 설씨는 지금 뭐 해요? |
Seol: 티비 봐요. |
Keith: I am watching TV. So how do we make that into reported speech? The verb there is 보다 to see. |
Seol: We add ㄴ to the verb stem so 본다. 티비 본다. 티비 본다고 말하다. |
Hyunwoo: 설씨, 티비 본다고요? |
Seol: 네, 티비 봐요. |
Keith: And if your verb stem ends in a consonant, all you go to do is add 는 not ㄴ. |
Hyunwoo: 설씨, 지금 뭐 해요? |
Seol: 밥 먹어요. |
Hyunwoo: 밥 먹는다고요? |
Seol: 네 |
Keith: So we have 먹다 over there and because 먹다 it has 받침이 있죠 it ends in a consonant, we add 는 instead of ㄴ. |
