| Keith: So that’s where you got the whole me, me, me…. |
| Misun: Right, right not you. |
| Keith: Okay, okay. Well Misun, do you want to quickly tell us how this idioms and phrases lesson works. |
| Misun: 네. It’s like our other regular lessons but we give you a phrase that is very difficult to guess the meaning by translating it literally. |
| Keith: Right and instead of giving the answer right away |

| Keith: All right. So what are we going to take a look at in this lesson? |
| Misun: In this lesson, we will learn how to say what if and in Korean, 만약에 -(으)면. |
| Keith: Okay and this conversation takes place |
| Misun: In a police station. |
| Keith: The conversation is between |
| Misun: Two detectives. |
| Keith: 딴딴딴… |

| Keith: And one of them is higher in rank. So he is using intimate language to the other detective and the one that’s lower in rank is using polite language. Okay and finally, what’s the phrase for this lesson? What are we going to take a look at? |
| Misun: 털어서 먼지 안 나는 사람 없다. |
| Keith: Okay well do you want to get into the literal meaning right now? |

| Keith: Personally, I don’t like to make assumptions too easily but I love that phrase 만약에. |
| Misun: 만약에. I love it too. |
| Keith: And that word means what if. |
| Misun: You don’t want to have any detectives or police officers saying 만약에 about you. |
| Keith: Definitely not but it is helpful to know how to say I am innocent in Korean. How do we say that really quickly? |
| Misun: 난 죄가 없어요. |
| Keith: And that’s literally I have no guilt but we will get into that a little later. Have you ever had to say that by the way? |

| Keith: She is rolling her eyes. |
| Misun: I know. |
| Keith: Let’s move on. |
| Misun: Maybe once or maybe twice. I don’t know but not in front of police detectives, okay? |
| Keith: That’s the important part. |
| Misun: Right. |
| Keith: And hopefully our listeners don’t have to say that either,right? |
| Misun: I never go to jail by the way. |

| VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE |
| Misun: The first word we are looking at is 죄. |
| Keith: Sin, guilt. |
| Misun: 죄. And you can make two more expressions using this word. |
| Keith: Right. As we mentioned before |
| Misun: 예. |
| Keith: How do you say I am innocent? |
| Misun: 전 죄가 없어요. |
| Keith: And that’s literally I have no guilt. |
| Misun: 전 죄가 없어요. 전 죄가 없어요. |
| Keith: Okay. Well how do we say that I am guilty although I don’t think many people would want to say that but how do you say that anyway? |
| Misun: I don’t want to say that one. All right. 저는 죄가 있어요. But it would be more common to hear something like 저한테도 죄가 있어요. or 저도 죄가 있어요. |
| Keith: And that’s literally to me also there is guilt. So it means I am guilty too. |
| Misun: 네, 맞아요. But I am innocent. 전 죄가 없어요. |
| Keith: Hey no one is accusing you but you know 털어서 먼지 안 나는 사람이 없어요. |
| Misun: 맞아요. I know. |
| Keith: And one more time, that’s our phrase for this lesson. |
| Misun: 털어서 먼지 안 나는 사람 없다. |
| Misun: But I am innocent. |

| Misun: 네. 만약에 이 사람이 아니면요? |
| Keith: What if it’s not this person? |
| Misun: When you are making an assumption about the possibility that your or somebody else’s decision is wrong or when you are thinking about the possibility of certain things that might or might not happen, you say what if in English, right? |
| Keith: Yeah and the equivalent expression in Korean, what do we say? |
| Misun: 만약에 으면. |
| Keith: 만약에 으면. |
| Misun: 만약에 means if and 으면 also means if. Therefore even without the word 만약에 as long as the main verb is conjugated using the form 으면 the sentence keeps the same meaning. |
| Keith: But usually 만약에 is added at the beginning of the sentence, right? |
| Misun: 네. In order to emphasize the meaning and often times, 만약에 is just shortened to 만약 as well. |
| Keith: Okay so just to recap really quickly, the only thing that we need is 으면. That’s the one if. |
| Misun: 네. |
| Keith: But if you want to emphasize, you can add 만약에 |
| Misun: Or 만약 |
| Keith: In front. |
| Misun: 네. |
| Keith: Okay and when you use this as a question like in this lesson’s dialogue, what does it mean? |
| Misun: It means what if. |
| Keith: So can you give some more specific examples of how to construct this? First, how do we say the verb to go? |
| Misun: 가다. |
| Keith: And how do you say what if you go or if you go. |
| Misun: 만약에 가면. |
| Keith: And we can just take out that 만약에 at in front too. |
| Misun: 네, 맞아요. It’s just emphasizing. |
| Keith: Right. Okay well how do we say to see? |
| Misun: 보다. |
| Keith: What if you see or if you see. |
| Misun: 만약에 보면. |
| Keith: Okay. Well how do you say what if it rains tomorrow? |
| Misun: 만약에 내일 비 오면. |
| Keith: What if you are not there? |
| Misun: 만약에 네가 거기에 없으면? |
| Keith: Well that’s great. Well do you want to talk about how this structure was used in this dialogue? |
| Misun: You want me to? |
| Keith: Oh yeah please. |
| Misun: Okay. 감사합니다. First it was used in 만약에 죄가 없으면요? |
| Keith: What if he is not guilty? |
