INTRODUCTION
Seol: 안녕하세요. 윤설입니다.
Minkyung: 안녕하세요. 민경입니다.
Keith: Hi Keith here. Idioms and Phrases, Lesson #4 Let’s Play. Hey let’s play after work.
Minkyung: 좋아요.
Seol: 그래!
Keith: 놀자! 설은 나이 제일 많으니까 밥 쏠 거지?
Seol: 응, 나 2만원 있어.
Keith: About 20 bucks, 20,000 won, 20 bucks.
Minkyung: 2만원으로 근데 분식점 가면 되게 많이 먹을 수 있어요.
Keith: Can we have that word again?
Minkyung: 분식점.
Keith: And this is street food restaurant kind of.
Seol: So it’s a restaurant you can eat the street food.
Keith: Yeah and we actually had a picture video vocab lesson on this. So if you want to check it out, it’s Picture Video Vocab Lesson #1. Okay well, before we get into this conversation, let’s talk about hanging out in Korea. 한국에서는 놀 때 what do people usually do?
Seol: Well I think what men do and what women do is different in Korea.
Keith: Okay so since the two of you are lovely ladies, why don’t you tell us what you do?
Seol: 민경 씨, 우리 뭐 하죠 보통?
Minkyung: 저는 친구들 만나면 거의 먹으러 가요.
Seol: 커피 마시러 가고요. 밥 먹으러 가고 그러는 거 같아요.
Minkyung: 쇼핑하고.
Keith: So basically it’s just women in any country I think.
Seol: Yeah..
Keith: Just go out to eat, go out to drink some coffee, shopping and a lot of talking.
Seol: Yeah.
Keith: Okay. 남자들은요? What about the men?
Seol: 당구장 가고.
Keith: I love 당구장 and can we have that word again?
Seol: 당구장.
Keith: And that’s pool hall. 그러고요?
Minkyung: PC방도 많이 가요.
Keith: PC방. It’s like an internet café, kind of.
Seol: 술 제일 많이 마시죠?
Keith: Alcohol. Well 근데 여자들도 술 마시죠? Like women drink alcohol too.
Seol: Yeah you are right but generally we prefer coffee.
Minkyung: 네. 여자들은 술보다는 단 거나 디저트를 더 좋아하는 거 같아요.
Keith: Umm sweet things or dessert. All right, so let’s move on to today’s conversation. What’s going on, what’s taking place?
Seol: 막스랑 현석이 서로 얘기를 하고 있는데요. 막스가 뭔가 믿을 수 없는 something unbelievable한 사실을 얘기하고 있어요.
Keith: So Max is saying something unbelievable.
Seol: 네.
Keith: Okay and what is he talking about?
Minkyung: Max said that he is going to hang out with 김태희 and 비.
Keith: And for some of our listeners that may not know who is 김태희?
Minkyung: She is a famous celebrity in Korea. She is really, really, really beautiful.
Keith: Yeah I agree. She looks pretty good.
Minkyung: Really and she is so smart too. So…
Keith: And yeah she goes to 서울대 right? Seoul University?
Minkyung: Yeah.
Keith: Okay and who is 비?
Seol: The Asian pop star.
Keith: Yeah he is not even just a Korean pop star. He is a pop star in Asia. He is very popular all over Asia and now he is trying to go to the US I think.
Seol: Yeah now he is having a lot of shows in LA and Europe.
Keith: Well good luck 비 and also they might know him as another name.
Seol: Rain.
Keith: Yeah I think a lot of people in America might know him as Rain too but…
Minkyung: His new movie is coming out.
Keith: Speed Racer.
Minkyung: Yeah.
Keith: Okay well, let’s see what Max has to say about 김태희 and and actually before we get into this, what kind of politeness level are they going to be using?
Seol: 반말.
Keith: Casual language. Okay let’s listen in.

(2)현석: 거짓말!
(3)막스: 정말이야! 우리 압구정동에서 놀기로 했어.
(4)현석: 김태희랑 놀아? 그럼 김태희랑 뭐 해? 응?

Seol: 천천히 들어 보세요.
(1)막스: 아! 내가 말했어? 나 김태희 만났어! 내일 놀기로 했어.
(2)현석: 거짓말!

(6)현석: 진짜 놀고 있네…
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Keith: So Max apparently met 김태희 and 비.
Seol: Isn’t he lying?
Keith: Well that’s a thing. I think in Korea, it’s not so difficult to meet a celebrity and real quick what’s celebrity in Korean?
Minkyung: 연예인.
Keith: And 한국에는 연예인이 많죠?
Minkyung: 네, 많아요. 그리고 제 친구한테 들은 건데요. 압구정동 가면 진짜 연예인 많이 볼 수 있대요. Yeah my friend said that if you go to 압구정동, you could actually see a lot of celebrities there.
Keith: And actually that’s the place that Max apparently agreed to hang out with 비 I think and 김태희.
Seol: Yeah.
Keith: So what is that place?
Seol: 압구정동.
Keith: 그리고 그거는 서울에 있죠?
Seol: Yeah it’s located in the center of Seoul.
Keith: And yeah, just like Minkyung said, apparently there is a lot of big stars.
Seol: Yeah I was working in 청담동 which is near 압구정동, and I met a lot of stars there.
Keith: So who did you meet?
Seol: 이영애.
Keith: I don’t know who that is.
Minkyung: She is really, really famous in Korea. I think she is more famous than 김태희.
Seol: Don’t you know the heroin of 대장금?
Keith: Ah yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah….I just don’t really know the names but yeah.
Seol: Also I met 옥주현. I cannot say I met her but I just saw her there.
Keith: Well yeah, Korea is a very small nation but it has a lot of pop stars and a lot of celebrities and it’s very easy to run into them.
Seol: If you go to 청담 or 압구정동.
Keith: All right. Let’s move on to the vocab.
VOCAB LIST
Keith: First word we have is
Minkyung: 말하다.
Keith: To say, to speak.
Minkyung: 말하다 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 말하다 [natural native speed]
Keith: Next we have
Minkyung: 만나다.
Keith: To meet.
Minkyung: 만나다 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 만나다 [natural native speed]
Keith: 그 다음에.
Minkyung: 놀다.
Keith: To hang out, to play.
Minkyung: 놀다 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 놀다 [natural native speed]
Keith: And next
Minkyung: 거짓말.
Keith: Lie.
Minkyung: 거짓말 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 거짓말 [natural native speed]
Keith: After that we have
Minkyung: 정말.
Keith: Really.
Minkyung: 정말 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 정말 [natural native speed]
Keith: And next is
Minkyung: 압구정동.
Keith: A wealthy neighborhood in Seoul.
Minkyung: 압구정동 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 압구정동 [natural native speed]
Keith: And finally we have
Minkyung: 먹다.
Keith: To eat.
Minkyung: 먹다 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 먹다 [natural native speed]
Keith: All right and some of these words are very useful in today. What’s to hang out?
VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Seol: 놀다.
Keith: But it’s also to play.
Seol: 놀다.
Keith: So actually when I see a lot of Korean speakers learning English, they always say, oh I want to play.
Seol: 나 너랑 놀고 싶어. I want to spend time with you. I want to hang out with you. That’s...
Keith: I want to play with you.
Seol: Yeah.
Keith: So it doesn’t translate too well between the two languages but yeah, it basically means just hang out. So where does it mean to play then?
Minkyung: 운동장에서 애들이 놀다.
Keith: The kids are playing in the gym and actually this is part of our phrase for today. What’s our phrase for today?
Seol: 놀고 있네. You have to be really careful when you sound this 놀고 있네. This intonation is the key of this phrase.
Keith: Well actually we are not in the bonus track yet.
Seol: Okay.
Keith: So if you are new to Idioms and Phrases, we have this phrase, that’s today’s phrase and we are going to take a look at it in our bonus track. So remember to stop by KoreanClass101.com and listen to our bonus track but I like that phrase. It’s a good phrase.
Seol: 놀고 있네.
Keith: And you can kind of infer from, even if you don’t know the meaning, from the intonation…
Minkyung: Yeah it sounds a little bit, the person who is saying it is really annoyed.
Keith: And it’s kind of true, right?
Seol: Yeah.
Keith: 놀고 있네.
Seol: Yeah it sounds really good.
Keith: All right. So before we reveal our secret phrase today, let’s move on to our next word. Now as we talked about before, 압구정동 that’s a really rich neighborhood in Korea and a place where a lot of celebrities live and hang out as well. Do both of you hang out in 압구정동? 압구정동에서 놀아요?
Seol: 아니요.
Keith: Why not?
Seol: That place is too expensive.
Minkyung: If you are to eat there, it’s very expensive and I don’t think there is any good place to eat in 압구정동.
Seol: Yeah now it’s a place for shopping and like for drinking. There is a very famous street.
Minkyung: 로데오 거리.
Keith: And that’s Rodeo Drive?
Seol: Yeah. You cannot actually drive a car. You just can walk.
Keith: Actually I see people trying to drive their cars and it’s not – it doesn’t work very well and there is a lot of people there. Even if you go to like a normal, let’s say even like a PC방. 원래는 1시간에 천 원 그 정도 나오죠? But if you go to 압구정동 it’s like twice the price.
Seol: 어 정말요? 너무 비싸다.
Minkyung: 근데 PC방 가려고 압구정동 잘 안 가잖아요. 뭐 하러 가셨어요?
Keith: Well I am not going there to go to the PC방. I am hanging out in 압구정동 and I am waiting for a friend. I got nothing to do for an hour. I am cooler than that, okay.
Seol: Okay.
Minkyung: Okay, okay.
Seol: 놀고 있네.
Keith: No. And once again, that’s our phrase. Stick around for the bonus track and how did that word 놀다 come out in today’s conversation?
Seol: 내일 놀기로 했어.
Keith: And that last 기로 했어 that’s part of our grammar point today but please be a little patient with this. So we agree to hang out tomorrow. Where else did it come out?
Minkyung: 압구정동에서 놀기로 했어.
Keith: We agree to hang out in 압구정동 that rich neighborhood and of course because she is a celebrity, she is going to hang out there.
Minkyung: Yeah.
Keith: All right and where else?
Seol: 비랑 같이 놀기로 했어.
Keith: We agree to hang out with 비, Rain.
Seol: 놀고 있네.
Keith: Okay. So let’s move on to our grammar so we can understand a little better what’s going on in today’s conversation.

Lesson focus

Keith: So what’s our grammar point for today?
Minkyung: 기로 하다.
Keith: And this is used when you want to make plans to decide to, agree to and it’s often used when you are talking about plans that you made with your friends and actually this is a very, very complex grammatical structure. There is particles in there, there is nominalization but it’s very simple to use. We are going to give it to you as a grammatical phrase. In today’s conversation, what came out?
Seol: 놀기로 했어.
Keith: And that means, we agreed to hang out, we made plans to hang out. What’s our verb?
Minkyung: 놀다.
Keith: To hang out, to play and our verb stem is
Minkyung: 놀
Keith: And we just add on our grammatical structure.
Minkyung: 놀기로 하다.
Keith: And that last 하다 verb, that’s where you can add on all the conjugations, the politeness levels, tense et cetera. So in today’s conversation 놀기로
Minkyung: 했어.
Keith: And that’s said in the past tense because they already agreed. They already made plans. So in today’s conversation, that grammatical structure comes out 놀기로 했어. And what other verb came out in today’s conversation with that grammatical structure?
Seol: 먹기로 했어.
Keith: We agreed to eat, we decided to eat. Okay so what are you doing this weekend? 이번 토요일에 뭐 해요?
Seol: 친구 만나기로 했어요.
Keith: You agreed with your friend to meet.
Minkyung: 이빨 뽑기로 했어요.
Seol: 정말?
Minkyung: 네. 사랑니가 너무 아파서 뽑기로 했어요.
Keith: Okay wait, so can we break that down. I think that was very interesting.
Minkyung: 이빨 뽑기로 했어요.
Keith: I made plans to take my teeth out. All right well I think that’s going to do it for the lesson.

Outro

Seol: Sure I hope you learned a lot from this lesson.
Keith: Wait but some of our listeners got a little more to learn and where can they find that?
Seol: You mean the bonus track right?
Keith: Yeah. That’s where you are going to find out what our phrase for today means. What’s our phrase once again?
Seol: 놀고 있네.
Keith: 우리 listener들한테 말하는 거 아니죠? You are not saying that to our listeners, right?
Seol: No of course not, no, no.
Keith: Okay well to find out what it means, stop by KoreanClass101.com and there, we have our bonus track. See you there.
