Hyunwoo: Well I havenโt really had a close look at your ears but let me have a look. |
Gyeongeun: ๋์ด์. Forget it. You know, I am not meaning it literally. |
Hyunwoo: I know. So everyone be sure to make a guess about what this phrase |
Gyeongeun: ๊ท๊ฐ ์๋ค. |
Hyunwoo: Means and come to KoreanClass101.com and check out the bonus track to learn more about it. So for now, letโs look at the vocabulary used in todayโs dialogue. |

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE |
Hyunwoo: Okay. So now letโs have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from the lesson. The first word weโd like to have a look at is |
Gyeongeun: ํ๋ถ. |
Hyunwoo: Refund. So ๊ฒฝ์ ์จ how do you say, to get a refund? |
Gyeongeun: ํ๋ถ์ ๋ฐ๋ค. |
Hyunwoo: So how do you say, give me a refund or I would like to get a refund? |
Gyeongeun: ํ๋ถํด ์ฃผ์ธ์. |
Hyunwoo: Yeah. You got to add a little anger to that phrase, right? ํ๋ถํด ์ฃผ์ธ์. |
Gyeongeun: Yeah. |
Hyunwoo: You know, I donโt like this product. Give me my money back. So what was it again? |
Gyeongeun: ํ๋ถํด ์ฃผ์ธ์. |
Hyunwoo: Can you slow down a bit? |
Gyeongeun: Okay ํ๋ถํด ์ฃผ์ธ์. |
Hyunwoo: Okay but sometimes you know ํ๋ถ might not be possible in some shops but they will instead offer an exchange right? |
Gyeongeun: Yeah right. |
Hyunwoo: So how do you say that? |
Gyeongeun: ๊ตํ. |
Hyunwoo: Exchange as in changing a product with a different one. So how do you say I would like to exchange this? |
Gyeongeun: ๊ตํํด ์ฃผ์ธ์. |
Hyunwoo: Or you can also say |
Gyeongeun: ๋ฐ๊ฟ ์ฃผ์ธ์. |
Hyunwoo: Great. So whatโs the next word? |
Gyeongeun: ์ฌ์ํ. |
Hyunwoo: Free gift, freebie and this word ์ฌ์ํ has an interesting meaning. |
Gyeongeun: ๋ค. Itโs ์ฌ์ plus ํ and ์ฌ์ means to ๊ฐ์ฌํ๋ค, ๊ณ ๋ง์ํ๋ค. |
Hyunwoo: To appreciate or to thank. |
Gyeongeun: And ํ means a ๋ฌผ๊ฑด or ์ํ. |
Hyunwoo: A thing or a product. |
Gyeongeun: Together ์ฌ์ํ is ๊ฐ์ฌํ๋ ๋ง์์ผ๋ก ์ฃผ๋ ๋ฌผ๊ฑด. |
Hyunwoo: Yeah itโs something that you give out of appreciation or thankfulness at least literally that is. So it takes the meaning of a free gift or a freebie. |
Gyeongeun: ๋ค, ์ ๋ ์ฌ์ํ ๋ฐ๋ ๊ฑฐ ๊ต์ฅํ ์ข์ํด์. |
Hyunwoo: Do you like receiving freebies? |
Gyeongeun: ๋ค, ๋ง์์. |
Hyunwoo: Is everything that you are wearing and carrying right now a freebie? |
Gyeongeun: ๊ต์ฅํ ๋ง์ ๊ฑธ์? |
Hyunwoo: ์ง์ง์? |
Gyeongeun: ๋ค, ์ ๋ ๊ท๊ฐ ์์ ์ฌ๋์ด์์. ์ฌ์ํ ์ค๋ค๊ณ ๊ทธ๋ฌ๋ฉด ์ฌ์. |
Hyunwoo: Ah I see. So your ears are thin. |
Gyeongeun: ๋ค, ๋ง์์. |
Hyunwoo: And again please check out the bonus track to know what it really means. So before you jump on to the bonus track, wait a minute because we have grammar point coming up. |
Gyeongeun: ๋ค. |
Lesson focus
|
Hyunwoo: So what is todayโs grammar point? |
Gyeongeun: ๊ณ ํด์. |
Hyunwoo: I heard that, they said that. |
Gyeongeun: And it comes from ๊ณ ๋งํ๋ค and ๊ทธ๋์. |
Hyunwoo: Yes ๊ณ ๋งํ๋ค is the past tense for ๊ณ ๋งํ๋ค and it means |
Gyeongeun: To say. |
Hyunwoo: And the subject for this verb is understood and generally refers to other people ๋ค๋ฅธ ์ฌ๋๋ค, right? |
Gyeongeun: You are right. So you can translate it as they said or I heard in English. |
Hyunwoo: And the last part ์ comes from ๊ทธ๋์ which means therefore or so. So this entire structure takes the meaning of they, someone or some people said this. So I am doing this or I did this. |
Gyeongeun: Yes and the construction is very simple too. |
Hyunwoo: How? |
Gyeongeun: You add ๊ณ ํด์ after the plain narrative. |
Hyunwoo: Okay for example, what is to go? |
Gyeongeun: ๊ฐ๋ค. |
Hyunwoo: And how do you say that in the plain narrative? |
Gyeongeun: ๊ฐ๋ค. |
Hyunwoo: ๊ฐ๋ค. So how do you say they said that they were going so... |
Gyeongeun: ๊ฐ๋ค๊ณ ํด์. |
Hyunwoo: Good. One more. How do you say to be good? |
Gyeongeun: ์ข๋ค. |
Hyunwoo: And itโs a descriptive verb. So itโs the same form in the plain narrative. |
Gyeongeun: So it becomes ์ข๋ค๊ณ ํด์. |
Hyunwoo: I heard itโs good soโฆ |
Gyeongeun: ๋ง์์. |
Hyunwoo: Good. So how was it used in todayโs dialogue? ์ค๋ ๋ํ์์ ์ด๋ป๊ฒ ์ฐ์์ด์? |
Gyeongeun: ์ฐ์ง๊ฐ ๋งํ์ด์. ํ ๋ฒ๋ง ๋ฐ๋ฅด๋ฉด ๊นํํฌ์ฒ๋ผ ๋๋ค๊ณ ํด์... |
Hyunwoo: They said that I would become like Kim Taehee by putting it on just once. |
Hyunwoo: And they said that they would give me a vacuum cleaner as a free gift. |
Gyeongeun: ์ค, ์ข์๋ฐ์ ์ง์ง? |
Hyunwoo: Would you fall for this? |
Gyeongeun: ๋ค. |
Hyunwoo: But vacuum cleaners these days are so cheap. You donโt have to buy an expensive cosmetics you know to get a vacuum cleaner. |
Gyeongeun: But I would need cosmetics anyways. So itโs okay. |
Hyunwoo: Okay then can you give us some more examples? |
Gyeongeun: ๋ค. ์ค๋ ๋น๊ฐ ์จ๋ค๊ณ ํด์ ์ฐ์ฐ์ ๊ฐ์ ธ์์ด์. |
Hyunwoo: I heard that itโs going to rain today, so I brought my umbrella. |
Gyeongeun: ๊ทธ๋ฆฌ๊ณ ์ด ์ํ ์ฌ๋ฏธ์๋ค๊ณ ํด์ ์ ๋ดค์ด์. |
Hyunwoo: I heard that this movie isnโt good. So I didnโt watch it. So you get the idea how this ๊ณ ํด์ works and that just about does it for today. ๊ฒฝ์ ์จ, ์๊ณ ํ์
จ์ด์. |
