POST CONVERSATION BANTER |
Hyunwoo: There you go! You heard that little jingle instead of the translation for the phrase of the day. |
Gyeongeun: I use this expression a lot. |
Hyunwoo: About yourself? |
Gyeongeun: No why? you think I am a 귀가 얇은 사람? |
Hyunwoo: Well I haven’t really had a close look at your ears but let me have a look. |

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE |
Hyunwoo: Okay. So now let’s have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from the lesson. The first word we’d like to have a look at is |
Gyeongeun: 환불. |
Hyunwoo: Refund. So 경은 씨 how do you say, to get a refund? |
Gyeongeun: 환불을 받다. |
Hyunwoo: So how do you say, give me a refund or I would like to get a refund? |
Gyeongeun: 환불해 주세요. |
Hyunwoo: Yeah. You got to add a little anger to that phrase, right? 환불해 주세요. |
Gyeongeun: Yeah. |
Hyunwoo: You know, I don’t like this product. Give me my money back. So what was it again? |
Gyeongeun: 환불해 주세요. |
Hyunwoo: Can you slow down a bit? |
Gyeongeun: Okay 환불해 주세요. |
Hyunwoo: Okay but sometimes you know 환불 might not be possible in some shops but they will instead offer an exchange right? |
Gyeongeun: Yeah right. |
Hyunwoo: So how do you say that? |
Gyeongeun: 교환. |
Hyunwoo: Exchange as in changing a product with a different one. So how do you say I would like to exchange this? |
Gyeongeun: 교환해 주세요. |
Hyunwoo: Or you can also say |
Gyeongeun: 바꿔 주세요. |
Hyunwoo: Great. So what’s the next word? |
Gyeongeun: 사은품. |
Hyunwoo: Free gift, freebie and this word 사은품 has an interesting meaning. |
Gyeongeun: 네. It’s 사은 plus 품 and 사은 means to 감사하다, 고마워하다. |
Hyunwoo: To appreciate or to thank. |
Gyeongeun: And 품 means a 물건 or 상품. |
Hyunwoo: A thing or a product. |
Gyeongeun: Together 사은품 is 감사하는 마음으로 주는 물건. |
Hyunwoo: Yeah it’s something that you give out of appreciation or thankfulness at least literally that is. So it takes the meaning of a free gift or a freebie. |
Gyeongeun: 네, 저도 사은품 받는 거 굉장히 좋아해요. |
Hyunwoo: Do you like receiving freebies? |
Gyeongeun: 네, 맞아요. |
Hyunwoo: Is everything that you are wearing and carrying right now a freebie? |
Gyeongeun: 굉장히 많을 걸요? |
Hyunwoo: 진짜요? |
Gyeongeun: 네, 저도 귀가 얇은 사람이에요. 사은품 준다고 그러면 사요. |
Hyunwoo: Ah I see. So your ears are thin. |
Gyeongeun: 네, 맞아요. |
Hyunwoo: And again please check out the bonus track to know what it really means. So before you jump on to the bonus track, wait a minute because we have grammar point coming up. |
Gyeongeun: 네. |
Lesson focus
|
Hyunwoo: So what is today’s grammar point? |
Gyeongeun: 고 해서. |
Hyunwoo: I heard that, they said that. |
Gyeongeun: And it comes from 고 말했다 and 그래서. |
Hyunwoo: Yes 고 말했다 is the past tense for 고 말하다 and it means |
Gyeongeun: To say. |
Hyunwoo: And the subject for this verb is understood and generally refers to other people 다른 사람들, right? |
Gyeongeun: You are right. So you can translate it as they said or I heard in English. |
Hyunwoo: And the last part 서 comes from 그래서 which means therefore or so. So this entire structure takes the meaning of they, someone or some people said this. So I am doing this or I did this. |
Gyeongeun: Yes and the construction is very simple too. |
Hyunwoo: How? |
Gyeongeun: You add 고 해서 after the plain narrative. |
Hyunwoo: Okay for example, what is to go? |
Gyeongeun: 가다. |
Hyunwoo: And how do you say that in the plain narrative? |
Gyeongeun: 간다. |
Hyunwoo: 간다. So how do you say they said that they were going so... |
Gyeongeun: 간다고 해서. |
Hyunwoo: Good. One more. How do you say to be good? |
Gyeongeun: 좋다. |
Hyunwoo: And it’s a descriptive verb. So it’s the same form in the plain narrative. |
Gyeongeun: So it becomes 좋다고 해서. |
Hyunwoo: I heard it’s good so… |
Gyeongeun: 맞아요. |
Hyunwoo: Good. So how was it used in today’s dialogue? 오늘 대화에서 어떻게 쓰였어요? |
Gyeongeun: 연지가 말했어요. 한 번만 바르면 김태희처럼 된다고 해서... |
Hyunwoo: They said that I would become like Kim Taehee by putting it on just once. |
Gyeongeun: 정말요? 저도 이거 사고 싶어요. |
Hyunwoo: 그러니까 경은 씨 귀가 얇아요. |
Gyeongeun: 네, 저도 김태희처럼 되고 싶어요. 그리고 연지가 말했죠? 그리고 사은품으로 청소기를 준다고 해서... |
Hyunwoo: And they said that they would give me a vacuum cleaner as a free gift. |
Gyeongeun: 오, 좋은데요 진짜? |
Hyunwoo: Would you fall for this? |
Gyeongeun: 네. |
Hyunwoo: But vacuum cleaners these days are so cheap. You don’t have to buy an expensive cosmetics you know to get a vacuum cleaner. |
Gyeongeun: But I would need cosmetics anyways. So it’s okay. |
Hyunwoo: Okay then can you give us some more examples? |
Gyeongeun: 네. 오늘 비가 온다고 해서 우산을 가져왔어요. |
Hyunwoo: I heard that it’s going to rain today, so I brought my umbrella. |
Gyeongeun: 그리고 이 영화 재미없다고 해서 안 봤어요. |
Hyunwoo: I heard that this movie isn’t good. So I didn’t watch it. So you get the idea how this 고 해서 works and that just about does it for today. 경은 씨, 수고하셨어요. |
Outro
|
Gyeongeun: 네, 수고하셨습니다. |
