Seol: 안녕하세요. 윤설입니다. (Annyeonghaseyo. Yunseorimnida.)
Keith: Keith here. Korean Makeup Artist.
Keith: Hello, and welcome to the Beginner Series Season 3 at KoreanClass101.com, where we study modern Korean in a fun, educational format!

Seol: 정말? 너도 지쳐보인다.
Keith: I look exhausted. Yeah, well, I am. Alright tis conversation is between two people, a male and a female. They're just kind of talking about how they look. Of course, how the female looks, right?
Seol: Yeah.
Keith: That's the only thing that really matters. And the conversation is in informal Korean.
Seol: 반말
Keith: Let's listen in to the conversation.

POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Keith: Seol, I've got a question. 형제들이에요? or 애인들이에요?
설: I don't think they're brother and sisters. 애인거같아요. 형제 아니고 애인인 것 같애요.
Keith: Yea, it's a bit ambiguous if they're siblings, but I think it's leaning more towards couples. But I had a question.
설: 뭔데?
Keith: When she puts on makeup, 화장을 했을때, her brother or her boyfriend, what did he say?
설: He said 아파보여요.
Keith: You look sick. And if you didn't understand that, don't worry, we'll be covering that really soon, the grammar and the vocabulary. But why does he say that? Why does she look sick?
설: Because Korean girls, like to have light makeup.
Keith: Really quickly, what's a typical Korean makeup session? Light powder? I don't know the correct words. Dark Eyes? Really thick lips? How do Korean girls usually put on makeup?
설: Well, I love to have light makeup, so I believe we prefer light makeup, but these days, people put kind of dark makeup on their eyes.
Keith: Because they like having big eyes.
Seol: Yes. "I want to have big eyes!"
Keith: 유행이잖아요. It's really popular.

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Keith: Alright. Let's take a deeper look into some of the usages for the words and phrases from this lesson. The first word we're going to look at?
설: 성숙하다
Keith: To be mature. Can I use it as a compliment?
설: It depends on the person, but you cannot say this to people who are older than you, obviously. You use it to young people.
Keith: Yeah, but some people might not to be called, 성숙하다.
Seol: Me, neither.
Keith: You don't like that?
Seol: No.
Keith: Is it because you think you look old?
Seol: Yeah, some people just might take it wrong.
Keith: So you should be careful who use it with.
Seol: Yeah, sure. Usually, you use it to kids who are very mature. When a child is taller or bigger than other kids, we say 저 아이는 성숙하다.
Keith: That child is mature. Ok, and what do you say if the person is not mature. What is the opposite of 성숙하다?
설: 어리다
Keith: To be young, to be juvenile.
설: This is just used as to be young.
Keith: For example?
Seol: 16살? 아!! 너무 어리다.
Keith: Huh? 16 years old! You're so young!
설: Yeah, but this one has the nuance of being childish, not very mature.
Keith: Can you give me an example?
Seol: Keith는 행동이 너무 어려
Keith: My actions are so immature. Well, literally, that's "My actions are so young. So juvenile," but it has that nuance of being immature.
Seol: Yes.
Keith: Alright. So how did it come out in this dialog?
설: 정희 said 나 오늘 스타일 어때? 어려 보여? 성숙해 보여?
Keith: How's my style today? Do I look young? Old? What is our last word?
설: 쓰다
Keith: To put on, to wear. Such as?
Seol: 모자를 쓰다
Keith: To wear a hat.
Seol: 안경을 쓰다
Keith: To put on glasses. But what else can we use 쓰다 for?
Seol: 우산.
Keith: An umbrella.
Seol: 우산을 쓰다. 마스크
Keith: To put on a mask
Seol: 마스크를 쓰다.
Keith: Ok. Put on sunglasses. Well, it's also the word "to use" as well.
Seol: Yeah. 컴퓨터를 쓰다. 핸드폰을 쓰다.
Keith: To use my cell phone, but remember the spellings and the pronunciation are exactly the same. You just have to tell from context what it means. Alright. So how did it come out in this dialog?
설: 정희 said to her brother or her boyfriend, 뭐? 아파 보여? (한숨) 안경 쓰면? 어때? 똑똑해 보여?
Keith: What? I look like sick? How about if I wear my glasses? Do I look smart? Sometimes. Let's move on to our grammar.

Lesson focus

Keith: What is the grammar point for today?
Seol: 아어여 보이다
Keith: And this is translated as "seem (verb)" or "look (verb)"
설: Like Keith, 피곤해 보여.
Keith: Keith, you look tired. Or, Seol, 바빠보여.
Seol: Yeah, I seem busy.
Keith: Or you look busy. So this is used when you're making an assumption. Alright, how do we construct it?
설: First you need a descriptive verb, and you put 아어여 conjugation and just add 보이다
Keith: That sounds a little complicated but once we tackle an example it will be easier. So let's take the descriptive verb 졸리다, to be sleepy.
설: So take the verb stem 졸리
Keith: And there we put on the 아어여 conjugation
설: 졸려
Keith: And now we just add on?
Seol: 보이다. 졸려 보이다
Keith: Look sleepy, you look sleepy. Ok that was really easy and simple. Let's have a sample sentence.
설: 저 케익 너무너무너무너무 맛있어 보여.
Keith: That cake looks really, really, real-- can't really do it the same-- delicious. It looks really delicious. Alright. Can we have another sample sentence?
설: 너무 피곤해 보여요 괜찮아요?
Keith: You look so tired. Are you ok? Ok, how did it come out in this dialog?
설: It came out a lot in this dialog. 정희 asked 나 오늘 스타일 어때? 어려 보여? 성숙해 보여?
Keith: How's my style today? Do I look young? Do I look old? And how did her brother reply?
설: 아파 보여. 화장을 왜 그렇게 많이 했어?
Keith: You look sick.
설: and 정희 said 뭐? 아파 보여? (한숨) 안경 쓰면? 어때? 똑똑해 보여?
Keith: What? I look sick? What if I put on my glasses? Do I look smart?
설: And finally 정균, her brother, said 아니... 근데 조금 착해 보여.
Keith: No, but you look kind. You look nice. So you don't have a compliment for me?
Seol: Oh, Keith you're wearing glasses. 착해 보인다.
Keith: Do I look smart? No. Just nice. "You look like a nice boy."
Seol: That's it.

Outro

Keith: Alright. So that's going to do it for this lesson. Well, see everyone later!
Seol: 또 봐요. 안녕.
Keith: Bye!
