A: Oh, this? It's my mathematics book. |
B: Why are you carrying your mathematics book around? |

A: Don't lie! |
POST CONVERSATION BANTER |
Hyunwoo: 미선씨, what was your favorite school subject in high school? |
Miseon: Well believe it or not, I loved Math. |
Hyunwoo: Math? |
Miseon: Yeah. So I… |
Hyunwoo: I believe you. |
Miseon: You know actually I had a first award in the math contest when I was at high school. |
Hyunwoo: Wow awesome! |
Miseon: 네. |
Hyunwoo: I can’t believe that. I mean, I believe you of course but it’s almost unbelievable. |
Miseon: 근데 지금은 계산만 잘해요. |
Hyunwoo: You are only good at calculating? |
Miseon: Right. |
Hyunwoo: Yeah all the mathematics class is gone. |
Miseon: Right yeah but what about you? |
Hyunwoo: Well I loved Science but I didn’t really like mathematics. So you know, it didn’t really match because the more you study science, the more you have to know mathematics to be good at it. |
Miseon: Right. |
Hyunwoo: Right? |
Miseon: That’s true, right. |
Hyunwoo: Yeah. |
Miseon: But I am not good at science though yeah. |
Hyunwoo: I only loved the theory part the imagining part, not the calculating part. |
Miseon: Oh I see! Okay but I don’t think there was any subject that I could say the more I study, the more I like it. |
Hyunwoo: You mean like in this conversation, huh? |
Miseon: Right. |
Hyunwoo: Many are there. Well I think science was like that to me but I couldn’t really say, the more I study, the more I like it. |
Miseon: But I believe, we are going to learn how to say that in Korean in today’s lesson right? |

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE |
Hyunwoo: Now let’s have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson. The first word we are going to have a look at is |
Miseon: 이해하다 |
Hyunwoo: To understand. |
Miseon: 이해하다 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 이해하다 [natural native speed] |
Hyunwoo: Now this word 이해하다 is often also used in the form 이해되다. |
Miseon: 네. In fact you will hear 이해되다 more often in spoken Korean. |
Hyunwoo: Yeah 이해되다 is like 이해 is done or 이해 is possible. |
Miseon: 이해 means understanding. |
Hyunwoo: So 이해하다 if you break it down, it literally means to do understanding and 이해되다 is understanding is done or understanding is possible. So 미선씨 when you want to ask a friend, did you understand what I am saying or did you understand that, how do you ask that question in Korean? |
Miseon: 현우씨, 이해됐어? |
Hyunwoo: Yeah that’s literally, was understanding done? And how you answer that? |
Miseon: 응, 이해됐어. |
Hyunwoo: Yes understanding was done literally. It’s weird to translate everything in you know, word by word but that’s the literal translation 이해됐어. Okay and that basically means yes I understood. I got you. |
Miseon: Right. |
Hyunwoo: Right. So what’s the next word we are looking at? |
Miseon: Next word is 똑똑하다. |
Hyunwoo: To be smart, to be clever like 미선씨. |
Miseon: 감사합니다. 똑똑하다 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 똑똑하다 [natural native speed] |
Hyunwoo: Well I was kind of waiting for you to say the same thing to me but okay I will just go on. |
Miseon: No. |
Hyunwoo: You don’t want to say I’m 똑똑하다 too? |
Miseon: 현우씨, 아주 똑똑해요. |
Hyunwoo: Now I am forcing you to say that. |
Miseon: Right. Everybody 이해됐어요? |
Hyunwoo: Well as long as our listeners got the meaning of this word 똑똑하다, that’s fine. I can sacrifice myself. |
Miseon: Okay. |
Hyunwoo: Well the meaning of this word is very clear to be smart but the sound of this word is very interesting I think. |
Miseon: Yeah. 똑똑 |
Hyunwoo: 똑똑 |
Miseon: 똑똑 |
Hyunwoo: Yeah it’s the same sound that we make with our mouth when we want to say knock, knock in Korean. |
Miseon: Right. Can you hear? |
Hyunwoo: 똑똑 |
Miseon: Right. |
Hyunwoo: So when I was very little like very, very little, my friends and I used to tap on each other’s head with our fist like knock, knock and pronounce 똑똑 with our mouth and say, 너 똑똑하다, right? You know, you are smart. I know it’s a very childish practical joke. |
Miseon: 현우씨, with a fist? |
Hyunwoo: Yeah. |
Miseon: Really? |
Hyunwoo: You didn’t used to do that? |
Miseon: You know actually I used to do with one finger. |
Hyunwoo: Ah I see. |
Miseon: Yeah like it’s not like a 똑똑 but it’s like – more like a 틱틱 or something like that but with a fist, I can’t imagine. |
Hyunwoo: I didn’t do that to girls. I only did that to you know, other boys like 똑똑. |
Miseon: Aaha! Well one thing I remember actually in my childhood. This is really childish. |
Hyunwoo: I see. |
Miseon: If my friend doesn’t listen to me, then I actually tap her breast like 똑똑 and then 이해했어? or what are you doing? Something like that so…Well sorry 여러분, 미안해요. |
Hyunwoo: You are apologizing to your friends? |
Miseon: Right. |
Hyunwoo: Well I guess what I did was… |
Miseon: But it’s not like 똑똑해 but yeah still I used like 똑똑 sounds. |
Hyunwoo: I see what you mean. |
Miseon: 네. |
Hyunwoo: So now everybody has an understanding of what [*] means. Okay now, I think it’s time to go to the grammar point of this lesson. |
Miseon: 네. 갑시다 빨리. |
Lesson focus
|
Hyunwoo: 네. What is the grammar point of this lesson? |
Miseon: The grammar point of this lesson is how to say the more A, the more B using (으)면 (으)ㄹ수록 |
Hyunwoo: As in the example. |
Miseon: 읽으면 읽을수록 재미있어요. |
Hyunwoo: The more I read it, the more interesting it gets. |
Miseon: So when you want to say the more A, the more B in Korean, you can use the structure (으)면 (으)ㄹ수록. |
Hyunwoo: For the part, the more A, in Korean, the same verb is repeated in the structure (으)면 (으)ㄹ수록 right? So you say the same verb twice in Korean. |
Miseon: 네. but you change the form a little. So let’s have a look. It’s not too difficult. |
Hyunwoo: It’s not too difficult. So 가다 becomes 가 plus 면 plus 가ㄹ수록. So 가면 갈수록. The more I go something, something. So remember this 면 (으)ㄹ수록. |
Miseon: 네. And with 보다 to see, to look at, to watch, it becomes 보 plus 면 plus 보ㄹ수록 So it becomes 보면 볼수록 |
Hyunwoo: The more I see it, something, something. So how was this used in the dialogue for this lesson? |
Miseon: 읽으면 읽을수록 재밌어. |
Hyunwoo: The more I read it, the more interesting it is. |
Miseon: 공부하면 공부할수록 수학은 정말 매력적이야. |
Hyunwoo: The more I study it, the more attractive it is. |
Miseon: 너는 보면 볼수록 똑똑해. |
Hyunwoo: Thank you. |
Miseon: 네. |
Hyunwoo: Okay sorry. The more I see you, the more I think you are intelligent. |
Miseon: 저도 해주세요. |
Hyunwoo: 미선씨는 보면 볼수록 예뻐요. |
Miseon: 아 감사합니다. |
Hyunwoo: Okay. Before we finish, let’s have a look at some more sample sentences to make it even clear for our listeners. |
Miseon: Okay 좋아요. |
Hyunwoo: So how do you say the more I think about it, the more jealous I feel? |
Miseon: 생각하면 생각할수록 정말 부러워요. |
Hyunwoo: Right. The more you see each other, the closer you will get. |
Miseon: 자주 보면 볼수록 친해질 거예요. 그렇죠, 현우씨? |
Hyunwoo: 그렇게 생각합니다. |
Miseon: 네. |
Hyunwoo: 네. And the last sample sentence that I would like to change into Korean is the more you use it, the more convenient it is. |
Miseon: 쓰면 쓸수록 편해요. |
Hyunwoo: Yeah that is Koreanclass101.com, the more you use it, the more convenient and useful it is. |
Miseon: That’s awesome yeah. |
Hyunwoo: Yes, KoreanClass101.com은 쓰면 쓸수록 |
Miseon: 편해요. |
Hyunwoo: 편리하고 유용해요. |
Miseon: 네. 아주 편해요. |
Hyunwoo: Right. |
Miseon: 아주 편해요. |
Outro
|
Hyunwoo: 네. So that just about does it for today 미선씨. |
Miseon: 네. |
Hyunwoo: But before we go, we would like to remind our listeners that they can leave us a comment. |
Miseon: Click the comment, leave the comment for us okay? |
Hyunwoo: Yes, just say, 미선씨는 보면 볼수록 예뻐요 or… |
Miseon: Please. |
Hyunwoo: 현우씨는 보면 볼수록 멋져요 I will be waiting for that one. |
Miseon: I will be waiting for that for me okay. |
Hyunwoo: Well don’t worry. If nobody leaves a comment saying, you are 보면 볼수록 예뻐요, I will leave a comment for you. |
Miseon: Okay thank you, thank you 여러분 you have to see my face. I am 정말 예뻐요. |
