| Miseon: In this lesson, we will learn how to use -네 the suffix that is used commonly in Korean to show or ask for agreement. |

| Miseon: Two people who are hiking in the mountain and they bump into each other from time to time. |
| Hyunwoo: So that means the speakers don’t know each other very well. |
| Miseon: Therefore the speakers are speaking polite language. 존댓말이요. |

| Miseon: 네. 저는 산 너무너무 좋아해요. |
| Hyunwoo: 정말요? |
| Miseon: 네. I used to climb the mountains a lot when I was a high school student. |
| Hyunwoo: Really? |
| Miseon: And – yeah University student. Since I – I am in New York, there is no mountain there. 산이 없어요. So it’s very sad actually. |
| Hyunwoo: I see. What’s your favorite mountain in Korea? |
| Miseon: Actually 설악산 and then 한라산이요. |
| Hyunwoo: I see Hallasan is in 제주도 on Jeju Island. I love that mountain too. |
| Miseon: 네. 너무 아름다워요. |
| Hyunwoo: 네. And I think Korea is a great country to live in for mountain lovers. |
| Miseon: 네. I think so too. The mountain in Korea are not as high as some really big famous mountains in other countries but they are still very nice and beautiful right? |
| Hyunwoo: Yeah and you know, Korea is a very mountainous country because over 60% of all the land in Korea is mountainous. So every major city in Korea, you can say that they are somewhat surrounded by big and small mountains and Seoul is not an exception. |
| Miseon: Right. You know actually I was told like over 70% is like mountain – |
| Hyunwoo: Yeah. |
| Miseon: Surrounded by mountains. |
| Hyunwoo: 70% |
| Miseon: And even in Seoul area, there are lot of mountains that you can go to right? |
| Hyunwoo: Yeah like 북한산, 관악산 |
| Miseon: Or 설악산, 도봉산 |
| Hyunwoo: And et cetera right? |
| Miseon: Oh okay. |
| Hyunwoo: A lot of mountains. So if you like hiking in the mountains, that’s one more reason to come to Korea. |
| Miseon: 네. Come to Korea. And you can be working downtown and that you can be hiking in the mountain within an hour if you want. |
| Hyunwoo: That’s so true and that’s very, very nice. Okay. |
| Miseon: By the way, I actually went to 관악산 like a week ago. |
| Hyunwoo: You did? |
| Miseon: Yeah, it was so great. It was unbelievable. |
| Hyunwoo: I see… |
| Hyunwoo: We should go together sometime. |

| Hyunwoo: But we can’t go to the mountain now because we have to look at the vocabulary. |

| Hyunwoo: All right. Let’s have a closer look at the usage for some of the words. So the first word we are going to look at is |

| Hyunwoo: You know, when it’s cold, you say |

| Hyunwoo: But when the weather is not too cold but it’s cool and very refreshing, you say |
| Miseon: 서늘하다 I really like 서늘한 날씨. |
| Hyunwoo: I love 서늘한 날씨 too. I think everybody does. I love the summer and I don’t mind hot weather but I think I am waiting for some 더 서늘한 날씨. What about you? |
| Miseon: 저는 여름이 더 좋아요. |
| Hyunwoo: Really? |
| Miseon: 네. |
| Hyunwoo: I see. So okay what is the next word we are looking at? |
| Miseon: The next word is 평일. |
| Hyunwoo: Weekdays. |
| Miseon: 평일 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 평일 [natural native speed] |
| Hyunwoo: So it’s from 월요일 to 금요일 and those days are called 평일 in Korean. |
| Miseon: 네. 평 means usual like 평범하다. |
| Hyunwoo: To be usual, to be ordinary. |
| Miseon: And 일 means day. |
| Hyunwoo: Right so together 평일 usual or ordinary day of the week that is. So compared to the special Saturday and Sunday, weekdays are common, usual, ordinary days. |
| Miseon: Why we have to think that way? |
| Hyunwoo: I don’t know. |
| Miseon: Every day is ordinary. |
| Hyunwoo: Every day is ordinary and every day is special too. |
| Miseon: Right, right, right. |
| Hyunwoo: But the way Korean language goes they are called 평일. |
| Miseon: 네, 평일이에요. |
| Hyunwoo: Okay but now, let’s go to the grammar point of this lesson. |
| Miseon: Uh-huh. |

| Miseon: The focus of this lesson is -네 the suffix we use to show or ask for agreement. |
| Hyunwoo: As in the example. |
| Miseon: 오늘 날씨 좋네요. |
| Hyunwoo: The weather is good today. |
| Miseon: 네. So basically when you say a sentence, the sentence itself does not have any implication or nuance that you want some agreement or reaction from the person you are talking to, right? |
| Hyunwoo: Yeah but by using the suffix -네 in the sentence, you can add some nuance to the sentence that you want some sort of reaction from the other person. So for example, how do you say the weather is good today plainly? How do you say that? |
| Miseon: 오늘 날씨 좋아요. |
| Hyunwoo: Yeah to just deliver the fact that the weather is good today, you say this 오늘 날씨 좋아요. but if you want to mean, the weather is good today hah! Or I think the weather is good today, what do you think? Or I think the weather is good and I wonder whether you agree or not, what do you say? |
| Miseon: Using the ne suffix, you can say 오늘 날씨 좋네요. |
| Hyunwoo: Again let’s compare the two. What was the more plain way to say it? |
| Miseon: 오늘 날씨 좋아요. |
| Hyunwoo: And to show that you want some reaction |
| Miseon: 오늘 날씨 좋네요. |
| Hyunwoo: Yeah and sometimes even when there is nobody around to talk to or when you don’t really want anybody to react to what you say, you can use this structure to just show surprise about a discovery. |
| Miseon: 네. It sounds kind of like weird but that’s right. |
| Hyunwoo: But yeah in reality, it is very natural. |
| Miseon: Right, right like oh, it was here, oh! Or oh! That’s good yeah. |
| Hyunwoo: Right. So let’s look at how it was used in the dialogue for this lesson. |
| Miseon: 여기서 자주 만나네요. |
| Hyunwoo: I see you are here often and do you agree? |
| Miseon: 오늘 날씨 좋네요. |
| Hyunwoo: The weather is good today. Don’t you think? |
| Miseon: 오늘은 정말 서늘하네요. |
| Hyunwoo: It’s very cool today hah! |
| Miseon: 자주 오시네요. |
| Hyunwoo: You come here often right? So before we finish, how about we have a look at some more sample sentences to help our listeners understand this better? |
| Miseon: Sure I was waiting for that because that’s my section. |
| Hyunwoo: All right. So I will give the English sentences. Please say that in Korean and everybody listening out there, please think what you would say okay. So how do you say, this is really delicious? |

| Hyunwoo: Great. How do you say, we are busy today as usual, huh? |

| Hyunwoo: I think this movie is really good. Don’t you think? |
