| Hyunwoo: So 경은씨 is there something that you want to try doing but people are telling you not to. For example, is there a type of dance that you want to try learning and people tell you, no you are not going to be able to learn it? |
| Gyeongeun: 아니요. 없는데요. |
| Hyunwoo: 없어요? |
| Gyeongeun: 네. 현우씨는요? |
| Hyunwoo: Well I want to try doing a lot of things. My friends always tell me, Oh you are spreading yourself too thin and just focus on these things that you are already doing. So it seems like people around you are actually encouraging you to try new things, right? |
| Gyeongeun: You are right. I think so. |
| Hyunwoo: That’s good, that’s good. |
| Gyeongeun: Yeah a few years ago, I told my friends that I wanted to learn Latin dance but they told me not to because I can’t dance. |
| Hyunwoo: But you still did, right? |
| Gyeongeun: Yeah. |
| Hyunwoo: Okay. In that case, in those cases, you can use this expression 해 보고 싶다. But we are going to learn how to say that in a little more detail in the grammar section of this lesson and for now, let’s go on to the vocabulary. |

| Hyunwoo: A while ago, some time ago, a few days ago. |
| Gyeongeun: 얼마 전에 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 얼마 전에 [natural native speed] |
| Hyunwoo: And the reason that we wanted to talk about this item is because depending on the intonation, it can mean how long ago or some time ago. They are two different things right? |
| Gyeongeun: 네, 맞아요. |
| Hyunwoo: So 경은씨 let’s compare these two meanings okay. |
| Gyeongeun: 네, 좋아요. |
| Hyunwoo: 한 번 비교해봐요. So how do you say some time ago. |
| Gyeongeun: 얼마 전에 |
| Hyunwoo: And now how about how much time ago, how long ago? |
| Gyeongeun: 얼마 전에 |
| Hyunwoo: All right. These two meanings might not sound very different to you right now. |
| Gyeongeun: Yeah. |
| Hyunwoo: So let’s give our listeners some examples. So how do you say how long ago did you come here? |
| Gyeongeun: 얼마 전에 왔어요? |
| Hyunwoo: 얼마 전에 왔어요? How long ago did you come here and how would you say I bought this a while ago. |
| Gyeongeun: 얼마 전에 샀어요. |
| Hyunwoo: 얼마 전에 샀어요. |
| Gyeongeun: 네. |
| Hyunwoo: So if you look at those two phrases, you will see a slight difference between the intonation in the first sentence and the second sentence. 얼마 전에 왔어요? and 얼마 전에 샀어요. |
| Gyeongeun: 네, 맞아요. |
| Hyunwoo: So you add a little bit of more stress on 얼마. |
| Gyeongeun: 네. |
| Hyunwoo: When you want to ask when |
| Gyeongeun: 네, 맞아요. |
| Hyunwoo: 네. Okay and the second item that we want to look at is |
| Gyeongeun: 타다 |
| Hyunwoo: To ride |
| Gyeongeun: 타다 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 타다 [natural native speed] |
| Hyunwoo: And 타다 actually also means to burn. |
| Gyeongeun: 네, 맞아요. 불에 타다. |
| Hyunwoo: 불에 타다. To burn in the fire. Do you cook often? |
| Gyeongeun: No. I don’t. |
| Hyunwoo: When you do, does a lot of what you cook end up being burnt? |
| Gyeongeun: Sometimes. |
| Hyunwoo: Sometimes. 저도 음식을 하면 탈 때가 가끔씩 있어요. |
| Gyeongeun: 네, 저도요. |
| Hyunwoo: 특히, when I cook fish. |
| Gyeongeun: Ah you are right |
| Hyunwoo: Or when I make some fried rice, I actually leave the place and then come back a while later and 밥이 타요. |
| Gyeongeun: Oh… |
| Hyunwoo: That’s not good. Oh you just used a different word. |
| Gyeongeun: 네. |
| Hyunwoo: So what was the verb again? |
| Gyeongeun: 태우다 |
| Hyunwoo: 태우다. And it is actually a transitive form of 타다. 타다 is an intransitive form to burn, to be burnt and 태우다 is to make something burnt. |
| Gyeongeun: 네. 저는 밥은 태워본 적이 없어요. |
| Hyunwoo: So you’ve never burnt rice when making it. |
| Gyeongeun: 네. |
| Hyunwoo: I believe you. |
| Gyeongeun: Thank you. |
| Hyunwoo: So remember that 타다 is to ride but it can also mean to burn. All right great and now let’s move on to the grammar point of this lesson. |

| Gyeongeun: When you want to say that you want to try doing something in Korean, you can use the structure 아/어/여 보고 싶다. |
| Hyunwoo: Yeah this is the combination of 아/어/여 보다 and 고 싶다 and this structure is used when you talk about something that you hope to do but the reason that a lot of people say 아/어/여 보고 싶다 instead of just 고 싶다 is because this is a less direct way of saying that you want to do something. |
| Gyeongeun: Yes I do it too. |
| Hyunwoo: Yeah. |
| Gyeongeun: So if I want to say I want to use this, I could say 이거 쓰고 싶어요. But if I want to be more polite, I could say 이거 써 보고 싶어요. I want to try using this. |
| Hyunwoo: Yes that way you are being less direct and more polite. |
| Gyeongeun: You are right. |
| Hyunwoo: Because Korean people usually have a tendency of trying not to speak too directly. I want to use this, I want to. |
| Gyeongeun: No. |
| Hyunwoo: People are not really good at saying that. I am not good at saying that. So I always say 써 보고 싶어요. |
| Gyeongeun: 네. I want to try using… |
| Hyunwoo: Yeah I want to try. Can I use this for a second? |
| Gyeongeun: Yeah. |
| Hyunwoo: Very, very indirect and much more polite. So how do you form a sentence with this? |
| Gyeongeun: You take the verb stem and add 아/어/여 보고 싶다. |
| Hyunwoo: Okay for example |
| Gyeongeun: For example, 하다 is to do |
| Hyunwoo: And you make it |
| Gyeongeun: 해 보고 싶다 |
| Hyunwoo: To want to do or to want to try doing something. |
| Gyeongeun: 네. For example, if I want to say, I want to try doing it too, I could say 저도 해 보고 싶어요. |
| Hyunwoo: Okay now let’s look at how it was used in the dialogue for this lesson. |
| Gyeongeun: 네. 저 타 보고 싶어요! |
| Hyunwoo: I want to try riding it. |
| Gyeongeun: 근데 운전해 보고 싶어요. |
| Hyunwoo: But I want to try driving it. |
| Gyeongeun: 혼자 타 보고 싶어요. |
| Hyunwoo: I want to try riding it alone, great job and before we go, how about we look at some sample sentences. So 경은씨 how would you say, I want to try drinking some of it too. |
| Gyeongeun: 저도 마셔 보고 싶어요. |
| Hyunwoo: And how would you say I want to try going there once? |
| Gyeongeun: 한 번 가 보고 싶어요. |
| Hyunwoo: And lastly how would you say I want to try doing it by myself? |
| Gyeongeun: 혼자 해 보고 싶어요. |
| Hyunwoo: Yeah, yeah and when you say 혼자 해 보고 싶어요, you might actually mean that you want to try doing it but you can also mean that you want to do it by yourself. |
| Gyeongeun: 네, 맞아요. |
| Hyunwoo: Just leave me alone right? |
| Gyeongeun: Yeah. |
| Hyunwoo: That’s what you mean sometimes. |
| Gyeongeun: You are right. |
