DIALOGUE
gage jigwon: eoseo-oseyo. dasi osyeotneyo?
sonnim: ye... jinan beon-e omanwon bujokhadago haeseo, omanwon moaseo dasi wasseoyo.
gage jigwon: haha. ne. geureom jinan beon-e bon geu model sasil geo-yeyo?

gage jigwon: anieyo. dareun noteubuk-e bihamyeon gabyeowoyo.
sonnim: geuraeyo? jeo-neun mugeo-un geot gateunde...
gage jigwon: geureomyeon i model-eun eottaeyo? i model-eun keugi-do jakgo muge-do gabyeowoyo. keugi-e bihaeseo seongneung-do jeongmal jotkoyo.
sonnim: i model-eun eolma-yeyo?
gage jigwon: gusipmanwon-iyo.
sonnim: palsip-omanwon bakk-e eopseoyo.
gage jigwon: omanwon-man deo mo-euseyo.
sonnim: ne?
Store clerk: Good afternoon. You're back!
Customer: Yeah...you said that I was lacking fifty thousand won, so I saved up fifty thousand won more and came back.
Store clerk: Haha. Okay. Then are you going to buy the same model as the one you saw last time?
Customer: Yeah. The one that costs eight hundred thousand won.
Store clerk: That's a good decision. It has really high performance when you consider the price.
Customer: Yeah. But, I think it's a little heavy compared to its size.
Store clerk: No, it's light compared to other laptops.
Customer: Really? I think it's heavy...
Store clerk: Then how about this model? This model is small in size and it's light. Considering its small size, the performance is very good too.
Customer: How much is this one?
Store clerk: Nine hundred thousand won.
Customer: I only have eight hundred and fifty thousand won now.
Store clerk: Save up just fifty thousand won more.
Customer: What?
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Hyunwoo: Well I have a feeling that she will never be able to buy a laptop computer.
Miseon: Every time she has dropped by the store, the cost goes higher and higher. Right?
Hyunwoo: Yeah and it happens to a lot of people.
Miseon: Right.
Hyunwoo: So 미선씨
Miseon: 네.
Hyunwoo: When you buy an electronic gadget, do you usually spend a lot of time before you decide which one to buy?
Miseon: Well I guess I do but you know, if I went to Yongsan right now, I think I would be just as confused as this woman in the dialogue because you know in Yongsan, there is lots of computer stores. You know people like try to sell stuffs as much as possible.
Hyunwoo: Exactly.
Miseon: Yeah.
Hyunwoo: But you know my advice is before going to Yongsan, do all your research on the internet and make up your mind and then go to Yongsan only to negotiate the price and then buy the same model that you had in mind.
Miseon: Oh that’s a good idea and don’t look at the other products, right?
Hyunwoo: No not at all. Well if you want to enjoy spending the whole day there, that’s fine. But if you want to buy something really quick while you are there, you have to have something in mind.
Miseon: Okay I will remember that.
VOCAB LIST
Hyunwoo: All right. Now let’s check out today’s vocab.

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Hyunwoo: Let’s have a closer look at the usage for some other words and phrases from this lesson 첫 번째 볼 단어는?
Miseon: 지난 번
Hyunwoo: Last time.
Miseon: 지난 번 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 지난 번 [natural native speed]
Hyunwoo: Well these are actually two words combined.
Miseon: 네. 지난 plus 번 and 지난 comes from 지나다.
Hyunwoo: Which means to pass or to go by.
Miseon: 네, 맞아요. And 번 means time as in this time or next time.
Hyunwoo: Yeah so 지난 번 literally means the time that passed by. So it becomes last time.
Miseon: 네. 지난 번.
Hyunwoo: And you can actually make it shorter too right?
Miseon: 네. 저번.
Hyunwoo: 저번 as opposed to 이번 right?
Miseon: 네, 맞아요.
Hyunwoo: How do you say next time?
Miseon: 다음 번 and when people pronounce this word quickly like 지난 번 to 저번, this goes 다음 번 becomes shortened like 담번.
Hyunwoo: 담번 right?
Miseon: 네.
Hyunwoo: So what’s the next word 다음 단어는 or 담 단어는?
Miseon: 모으다
Hyunwoo: To collect and when it’s the case of money, it means to save up.
Miseon: 모으다 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 모으다 [natural native speed]
Hyunwoo: And the reason that we wanted to have a look at this word is that when you want to say to gather something, it’s 모으다.
Miseon: 네, 맞아요.
Hyunwoo: But when some things gather or when some people gather together, a slightly different form is
Miseon: 모이다.
Hyunwoo: Again it’s
Miseon: 모으다 and 모이다.
Hyunwoo: So 모이다 is the passive form of the verb 모으다 but just remember it as a separate verb 모이다.
Miseon: So to gather some friends is 친구들을 모으다.
Hyunwoo: Yeah and some friends together is 친구들이 모이다.
Miseon: 네, 맞습니다.

Lesson focus

Hyunwoo: Awesome. Now let’s look at the grammar point of this lesson. So what is the grammar point of this lesson?
Miseon: The grammar point of this lesson is how to say compared to something or when you consider something.
Hyunwoo: As in the example?
Miseon: 다른 노트북에 비하면 가벼워요.
Hyunwoo: It is light compared to other laptops.
Miseon: You can use the structure 에 비하면 or 에 비해서. When you want to talk about something in comparison to something else.
Hyunwoo: Or when you want a person you are talking to to take a certain factor into consideration before reaching a conclusion.
Miseon: 네. Let’s make it easier.
Hyunwoo: Okay let’s make it easier by looking at an example.
Miseon: 네. For example, when something is expensive, if you want to say that it is not so expensive when you consider the high quality of the product, you can use this structure.
Hyunwoo: And how do you say that?
Miseon: 품질에 비하면 or 품질에 비해서
Hyunwoo: Yeah 품질 means quality and the verb 비하다 means to compare. So 비해서 means by comparing and 비하면 means if you compare.
Miseon: 네. Therefore this structure is naturally translated into English as for, if you consider or compare to.
Hyunwoo: 네, 맞아요. So how was this structure 에 비하면 or 에 비해서 used in the dialogue for this lesson?
Miseon: 가격에 비해서 성능이 정말 좋아요.
Hyunwoo: It has really high performance when you consider the price.
Miseon: 그런데, 크기에 비해서 조금 무거운 것 같아요.
Hyunwoo: But I think it’s a little heavy compared to it’s size.
Miseon: 다른 노트북에 비하면 가벼워요.
Hyunwoo: It is light compared to other laptops.
Miseon: 크기에 비해서 성능도 정말 좋고요.
Hyunwoo: Considering its small size, the performance is very good too. Great, how about some more examples? How do you say considering my height, I don’t weigh much?
Miseon: 저는 키에 비하면 몸무게가 적어요.
Hyunwoo: And how do you say, if you consider the amount, it’s too expensive.
Miseon: 양에 비하면 너무 비싸요.
Hyunwoo: Yeah I think coffees in Korea are like this.
Miseon: 예, 맞아요.
Hyunwoo: Too expensive.
Miseon: 너무 비싸요.
Hyunwoo: 너무 비싸요. 양에 비하면.
Miseon: 네.
Hyunwoo: 그리고 다른 나라에 비하면.
Miseon: 네, 맞아요.
Hyunwoo: 너무 비싸요. How about compared to last year, I am not so busy this year?
Miseon: 작년에 비하면 올해는 안 바빠요.
Hyunwoo: And I wish I could say this.
Miseon: Oh no that’s not good.
Hyunwoo: Not good?
Miseon: In this downturn economy, no.
Hyunwoo: But I still wish I could say this. Compared to last year, I am not so busy this year.
Miseon: Because you are so busy all the time right?

Outro

Hyunwoo: That’s why I wish for this. So well 미선씨 that just about does it for today.
Miseon: Okay ready to test what you just learned.
Hyunwoo: Make this lesson’s vocabulary stick by using lesson specific flash cards in the learning center.
Miseon: There is a reason everyone uses flash cards.
