| Junyong: Right. It's okay. The weather forecast might be wrong. |
| Minseo: Yes. Oh, by the way, did you bring your camera? |
| Junyong: Bogyeong said she would bring one. |
| Minseo: Did she? What about the train tickets? |
| Junyong: Train tickets...Gyeong-hun said that he would buy them. |
| Minseo: But why are they still not here yet? |

| Hyunwoo: 미선씨. |
| Miseon: 네. |
| Hyunwoo: Do you get angry with your friends who are late? |
| Miseon: Oh actually I used to be angry when I was young but you know now I am very relaxed and you know, like laidback. So whenever they are late, I just read the book 책 읽어요. |
| Hyunwoo: So the next time I meet you, I don’t have to worry too much about being late? |
| Miseon: No, not at all. What about you? |
| Hyunwoo: No I – I am okay with that. I can spend time on my own, read a book or listen to my iPod. |
| Miseon: Right. |
| Hyunwoo: So it’s okay but I want to ask you something. What is the most outrageous excuse you’ve ever heard from a friend about being late? |
| Miseon: Actually, no excuse. It happened to me like a couple of days ago like I was supposed to meet one of my best friends like at 10 o’ clock. It was a little late right? |
| Hyunwoo: Okay. |
| Miseon: And then I was waiting like 10 minutes and 20 minutes like something like that and then kept calling her but she didn’t pick up the phone and never called me back. I was like, ah what’s wrong with her because I started worrying about her but she didn’t even call me until like 8 o'clock in the morning. |
| Hyunwoo: So she didn’t show up? |
| Miseon: No she didn’t show up. |
| Hyunwoo: And she didn’t give you any reason? |
| Miseon: No excuses. No anything and… |
| Hyunwoo: No explanation. |
| Miseon: No I was so upset actually. I was waiting like until 12 o’ clock at night because I had to go home. |
| Hyunwoo: I see. |
| Miseon: So I am like I am so angry by that time actually only one. |
| Hyunwoo: I see but that was just one time, right? |
| Miseon: Yeah it was one time like during this year. So… |
| Hyunwoo: I see. Do you think Korean people are more relaxed about people being late or not showing up or just the same as people from other countries? |
| Miseon: I think they are more like – they are not really concerned about other people’s time. |
| Hyunwoo: Ah that’s true. |
| Miseon: Yeah I mean like Korean people usually think that especially like friends 친구들끼리 만나면. |
| Hyunwoo: 네. |
| Miseon: They are usually late like Korean time. |
| Hyunwoo: Yeah the thing that we call the Korean time… |
| Miseon: Yeah. |
| Hyunwoo: Isn’t something that has been around for a long time. |
| Miseon: Actually everywhere has kind of like a time like a country time or like American time also but still Korean time is more like retarding like maybe 20 minutes, 30 minutes at most. |
| Hyunwoo: I think so. |
| Miseon: Yeah. My American friends always call me whenever they are late but sometimes Korean friends, they don’t call me and they just show up in 30 minutes. |
| Hyunwoo: And say I am sorry. |
| Miseon: It’s like 미안해. |
| Hyunwoo: Right but you know, I can only imagine but when people didn’t have cell phones you know many years ago in Korea, there was no way for people to call up and say hey, I am going to be 10 minutes late, can you wait? |
| Miseon: Aaha that’s true but you know I have a feeling that some people might have just arrived late any way. |
| Hyunwoo: So you mean, it’s better now because people can at least call to say, I am sorry, I am going to be late. |
| Miseon: Maybe. |
| Hyunwoo: But seriously it’s easier when it’s just two people meeting each other at a certain time but you know, when a large group of people meet sort of something like 엠티 or some sort of 모임 or 2차 being late tends to be taken very lightly in Korea. |
| Miseon: Yeah I don’t think it’s such a good thing though. |
| Hyunwoo: But at least you are always on time when I meet you. So I really appreciate that. |
| Miseon: Oh thank you but not today, sorry. |

| VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE |
| Hyunwoo: All right. Let’s have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson. The first word we are going to look at is |
| Miseon: 오랜만이다. We use this word to say that it has been a long time since something has happened. |
| Hyunwoo: Right. 미선씨, do you use the expression often? |
| Miseon: Yeah. When it seems like I haven’t seen a person in a while, I really say 우와, 정말 오랜만인 것 같다. |
| Hyunwoo: Right. In English, a similar expression would be it’s been such a long time right? |
| Miseon: 예. |
| Hyunwoo: What is the next word we are going to look at? |
| Miseon: 일기예보 the weather forecast. 현우씨, have you checked 내일의 일기예보? |
| Hyunwoo: Of course I always like to plan ahead. So when I wake up in the morning, I always check. |
| Miseon: Oh really. Then 내일 비가 온다고 했어요? |
| Hyunwoo: Well not at all. According to the weather forecast, 일기예보에 의하면 it’s going to be sunny all day. 비가 안 온다고 했어요. |
| Miseon: That’s great because I left my umbrella somewhere and I don’t want to buy another one. |
| Hyunwoo: Well the weather forecast isn’t always perfect which brings us to our next word to be wrong. |
| Miseon: 예. 틀리다. If I remember right, 제 기억이 틀리지 않으면 the weather forecast was wrong two times this week 이번 주에 일기예보가 2번 틀렸어요. |
| Hyunwoo: Well making a mistake only two times a week isn’t so bad, is it? |
| Miseon: Well no comment. |
| Hyunwoo: Well just to look on the bright side of things. Well now it’s time to look at today’s grammar point. |

| Hyunwoo: 미선, what is the grammar point of this lesson? |
| Miseon: Today’s lesson is how to deliver reported speech, things that other people have said ㄴ다고 하다. |
| Hyunwoo: As in the example |
| Miseon: 늦게 온다고 했어요. |
| Hyunwoo: He said he would come late. |
| Miseon: When you are talking to someone about what another person said before or reporting what you heard to someone else, you can use this grammatical structure ㄴ다고 하다. |
| Hyunwoo: Yeah this structure ㄴ다고 하다 is originally ㄴ다고 말하다 or ㄴ다고 이야기하다 right? |
| Miseon: 네, 맞아요. But the part 말하다 or 이야기하다 is shortened to just 하다. |
| Hyunwoo: Yeah the verb stems of action verbs like 하다 or 먹다 are followed by ㄴ다고 하다 and the verb stems of descriptive verbs like 예쁘다, 싸다, 비싸다 are followed by 다고 하다 only. |
| Miseon: 네, 맞습니다. So for example, 비가 오다 means to rain right? |
| Hyunwoo: Right. |
| Miseon: So it becomes 비가 오 plus ㄴ다고 하다. So 비가 온다고 하다. |
| Hyunwoo: To say that it will rain. |
| Miseon: 비가 온다고 했어요. |
| Hyunwoo: They said it would rain. |
| Miseon: And to take a descriptive verb as an example 싸다 is to be cheap right? |
| Hyunwoo: Yeah and what does it become? |
| Miseon: It becomes 싸 plus 다고 하다. So 싸다고 하다. |
| Hyunwoo: To say that it is cheap. |
| Miseon: 네. 싸다고 했어요. |
| Hyunwoo: I heard that it was cheap but you know in Korean, the subject of the sentence is often dropped and inferred. |
| Miseon: That’s right. |
| Hyunwoo: So when you are talking about something that you heard from the news or announcement or when you are talking about some information that it is not important to make clear who you heard it from you can just leave out the subject. |
| Miseon: 네. So for example, you can say 오늘 춥다고 했어요. |
| Hyunwoo: And that means, they said or somebody said, it would be cold today or I heard it would be cold today. No subject there. |
| Miseon: 네. Another one 이게 더 좋다고 했어요. |
| Hyunwoo: Again, you are not clarifying who said it but you are saying they said that this was better or I heard that this one was better. Again the subject is left out. So how was the structure used in the dialogue for this lesson? |
| Miseon: 네, 시작할게요. 둘 다 조금 늦는다고 했어. |
| Hyunwoo: They said that they would both be a little late. |
| Miseon: 어, 근데 오늘 비 온다고 했어. |
| Hyunwoo: Oh by the way, they said it would rain today. |
| Miseon: 보경이가 가져온다고 했어. |
| Hyunwoo: Bogyeong said she would bring one. |
| Miseon: 기차표는 경훈이가 산다고 했어. |
| Hyunwoo: Train tickets Gyeonghun said that he would buy them. Great, now let’s look at some more sample sentences. |
| Miseon: 네, 좋아요. |
| Hyunwoo: So how do you say I heard that the department store was having a sale starting today? |
| Miseon: 오늘부터 백화점 세일 한다고 했어요. I should go. |
| Hyunwoo: Take me along too. |
| Miseon: 네. |
| Hyunwoo: And how do you say 민수 said that he would arrive tomorrow? |
| Miseon: 민수는 내일 도착한다고 했어요. |
| Hyunwoo: And lastly how do you say 지수 said that she would help me? |
| Miseon: 지수가 도와준다고 했어. |
| Hyunwoo: Great and that just about does it for today. |
| Miseon: Yeah before we move on, I want to say to you 현우씨가 오늘 점심 산다고 했어요. |
| Hyunwoo: Well you don’t have to tell me that. Well you are telling our listeners so I can’t really run away. |
| Miseon: Yeah that’s true. |
| Hyunwoo: Well I will take you to a very, very nice lunch today. |

늦다 verb: be late (to be later than the set time)
모임에 늦다. be late for a meeting
도착 시간에 늦다. be late for arrival time
약속에 늦다. be late for an appointment
늦다 adjective: late; later (later than a point in time that serves as the baseline / being past the right time, or being past the peak of something.)
시계가 늦다. The clock is slow. (slower than the original correct time)
늦은 시간 late time.
늦은 아침 late morning
늦은 저녁 late evening
늦다고 also makes sense, when it's used as adjective. For example:
그 시계가 5분 늦다고 하던데. I heard the clock is five minutes late.
집에 도착해서 저녁을 먹기에는 너무 늦다고 했어. He/She said it was too late to have dinner when he/she got home.

I am confused on 늦는다고, I know that 늦다 can be a verb or an adjective, but I would have assumed in this case that it would be 늦다고 because it seems like an adjective. Please explain how to determine when to use verbs like this as a verb or an adjective.

They say that she is pretty. If the sentence is 'They said that she is pretty', the example sentence would have to be past tense as well: 예쁘다고 했어요.

일하기전네 --> 일하기 전에 (you need to put spaces in the right places)
핸드본 --> 핸드폰
You should try to join your sentences with more transitions as it is quite chopping.
Also... It may be more polite to use 존댓말 when addressing strangers.

there's a mistake on page 6 of the notes for the english translation:
"I heard that the

it should instead read "I heard that the department store is having a sale starting today".

저도, 찜닭은 많이 먹어 봤는데 안동찜닭은 먹어 본 적이 없는 것 같아요 ^^ 기회가 되면 꼭 먹어 봐야겠어요.
안동찜닭은 너무 맛있다고 했는데 아직까지 먹어 본 적이 없고요~~ :sad:
