| Miseon: In this lesson, we will learn how to use one of the most common sentence endings in Korean like -ㄴ데(요). |
| Hyunwoo: And where does this conversation take place? |
| Miseon: This conversation takes place in a stationery store 문구점. |
| Hyunwoo: And who is the conversation between 누구와 누구 사이의 대화예요? |
| Miseon: 글쎄요. The conversation is between the store owner and a customer. |
| Hyunwoo: Therefore they are speaking polite language to each other. |
| Miseon: 네, 존댓말이요. |

| Customer: Yes. How much are they? They don't have price tags on them. |

| Miseon: That’s great. |
| Hyunwoo: 미선씨, when you want to buy some stuff like notebook, scissors, glue stick, where do you go? |
| Miseon: Well it depends. 때때마다 달라요. |
| Hyunwoo: 아, 그래요? |
| Miseon: 네. If it’s just glue sticks, scissors or some things like tape or a ruler, I just buy them anywhere. |
| Hyunwoo: Anywhere is? |
| Miseon: Like small stationery shops around the corner or even convenience stores. |
| Hyunwoo: I see |
| Miseon: But when it comes to notebook, I have to go to some big bookstores, 서점이요. |
| Hyunwoo: I know what you mean 서점. |
| Miseon: 네. Because in Korea, big 서점s are the places where you find really high quality and pretty notebooks. |
| Hyunwoo: Yeah I agree. Well you can go to some fancier stationery stores like 10/10 or Morning Glory shops but they are not as easily found everywhere as bookstores are. |
| Miseon: 네, 맞아요. If you go to big bookstore, you can read books and buy notebooks at the same time too right? |
| Hyunwoo: Right exactly. What are some names of major bookstore chains that you’d like to go to? |
| Miseon: Ah…Mostly I usually go to 교보문고 and 을지서적 |
| Hyunwoo: I see. |
| Miseon: And 반디앤루니스 and 영풍문고요. |
| Hyunwoo: Yeah. Personally I really like 반디앤루니스 because 반디앤루니스 is the first big bookstore that had chairs where people can sit on. |
| Miseon: Oh okay I didn’t know that. |
| Hyunwoo: Yeah. All the other bookstores followed suit but 반디앤루니스 was the first big bookstore to do that. So I really appreciated that. So everyone when you come to Korea, check out these big bookstores. They are really, really nice places. |

| Hyunwoo: Yeah 문구 means stationery as you already know and 류 means kind, sort or category. So look for |

| Hyunwoo: 문구류. Okay. So what’s the next word we are looking at? |
| Miseon: Next word 가격표예요. |
| Hyunwoo: 네. Price tag. |
| Miseon: 가격표 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 가격표 [natural native speed] |
| Hyunwoo: Okay let’s break it down. What does 가격 mean? |
| Miseon: 가격 means price. |
| Hyunwoo: How do you say that something is expensive or cheap? |
| Miseon: You know everybody, I assume that you already know that right? |
| Hyunwoo: Yeah. |
| Miseon: Yeay, yeay, expensive 비싸다 cheap 싸다 but you can also use the word 가격 in there. Say 가격이 비싸다 or 가격이 싸다. |
| Hyunwoo: Yeah but in English it would be the price is high or low but in Korean, you don’t say 높다, 낮다, you say 비싸다, 싸다. |
| Miseon: 네. You are great 똑똑해요. |
| Hyunwoo: Thank you. |
| Miseon: And last word 표 is like ticket, tac or table. |
| Hyunwoo: Yeah so altogether 가격표 |
| Miseon: 가격표 |
| Hyunwoo: Price tag. All right, let’s go into the grammar point of this lesson. |

| Hyunwoo: So what is the grammar point of this lesson? |
| Miseon: The sentence ending -ㄴ데(요). |
| Hyunwoo: As in the example |
| Miseon: 안 보이는데요? |
| Hyunwoo: Well I don’t see it. So this is one of the most common sentence endings in spoken Korean I think. |
| Miseon: 네. By using this sentence ending, you imply that you are waiting for a response for the person that you are talking to. |
| Hyunwoo: Right. So this originally comes from the combination of verb plus 그런데 and as you know, 그런데 means but however and when combined with the verb of the previous sentence, it becomes a verb ending ㄴ데. |
| Miseon: And of course, you can add or not add 요 depending on the level of politeness of the sentence right? |
| Hyunwoo: Yeah exactly. So the sentence ending -ㄴ데(요) can be literally translated as subject, verb but or subject verb however. |
| Miseon: People use this sentence ending to really express the meaning of but or however too but in spoken Korean, people use this sentence ending more often in order to show that they want some reaction or response for the other person. |
| Hyunwoo: Right and even when no one is around and you are alone, it is often used as a way to express surprise or to show exclamation right? |
| Miseon: 음… 맞는데요. |
| Hyunwoo: Ah! You just used that. |
| Miseon: Right. So if you translate this into English. |
| Hyunwoo: In English, it can be translated as well, subject verb or subject verb, what do you think? |
| Miseon: 네, 맞아요. |
| Hyunwoo: So how do you form a sentence with this? |
| Miseon: It’s very simple, verb stem plus ㄴ데요. |
| Hyunwoo: So for example, the verb 이다 becomes |
| Miseon: 인데요 |
| Hyunwoo: And 예쁘다 becomes |
| Miseon: 예쁜데요 |
| Hyunwoo: Well thank you. Well if that’s a compliment. |
| Miseon: 현우씨, 나는요? |
| Hyunwoo: 미선씨, 예쁜데요? |
| Miseon: 감사합니다. |
| Hyunwoo: Well 예쁜데요 is not exactly the kind of compliment that I want. It means you are pretty so… |
| Miseon: Right. |
| Hyunwoo: It’s more right to go to you and 하다 becomes |
| Miseon: 하는데요 |
| Hyunwoo: Right and this sentence ending can be used with the past tense too. |
| Miseon: 네, 맞아요. Just add the same thing to the past tense form of the verb stem. |
| Hyunwoo: So 이다 is 이었다 in the past tense. So it becomes |
| Miseon: 이었는데요 |
| Hyunwoo: And 예쁘다 is 예뻤다 in the past tense. So it becomes |
| Miseon: 예뻤는데요 |
| Hyunwoo: Yeah. |
| Miseon: 아 현우씨, 예전엔 예뻤는데요. |
| Hyunwoo: Yeah you mean, I used to be pretty when I was a kid, I mean. Yeah that’s what my mother said sometimes. |
| Miseon: Right great. |
| Hyunwoo: So how was this sentence ending used in the dialogue for this lesson? |
| Miseon: 가위하고 풀이 필요한데요. |
