INTRODUCTION
Mingyeong: 안녕하세요 (Annyeonghaseyo). KoreanClass101의 지민경입니다 (ui jimingyeongimnida).
Keith: Hey and I'm Keith. In the Korean Museum - Don't Roam, But Just Be Still.
Mingyeong: In this lesson, you will learn how to say -지 말고(-ji malgo).
Keith: Not this, but this. Don't do A but do B. This will be really good for conversational Korean. So where is this conversation taking place?
Mingyeong: This conversation takes place during a tour.
Keith: Right. The conversation is between the tour guide and the tourists.
Mingyeong: So therefore the speakers will be speaking polite language, 존댓말 (jondaenmal).
Keith: Ok, well, are you ready to go on tour, Mingyeong?
Mingyeong: 네, 들어 봅시다. (ne, deureo bopsida.)

POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Keith: Mingyeong, are there a lot of museums in Korea?
Mingyeong: Yeah. Actually there's a lot of interesting museums pretty much in every city and especially in Seoul, and the museums are really cheap, too.
Keith: So what can our listeners do to find information about museums in Korea when they travel to Korea?
Mingyeong: You can search on the internet before you arrive in Korea, but once you're in Korea, if you want some real quick information, you can just call 1330.
Keith: 1330. Yeah, it's a service provided by the government, and you just call the number and ask where a good museum is in the city you're in, and they'll let you know.

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Keith: Ok. Well, are we ready? Mingyeong, what are we ready for? Come on! Help us out.
Mingyeong: Vocabulary usage!
Keith: Oh! You're excited.
Mingyeong: 네. How about we talk about three things that you shouldn't do in the museum, first, 떠들다
Keith: To make noise, to be loud. This is actually a word that you can hear a lot in schools.
Mingyeong: Yeah, the teachers always tell you 떠들지 마. 조용히 해.
Keith: Don't be loud! Don't make noise! Be quiet. What's another thing that we shouldn't do in the museum?
Mingyeong: 만지다
Keith: To touch. Of course, you shouldn't touch the painting and the objects, so 만지지 마세요.
Mingyeong: And when you buy a brand-new laptop or something and you can tell your friends 만지지 마.
Keith: It's mine. It's brand-new. Don't touch! Sounds really geeky, though, doesn't it?
Mingyeong: Yeah.
Keith: Well, what's our next word?
Mingyeong: Two words together, 사진 찍다.
Keith: To take pictures. Please, remember to use them as a pair. 사진 and 찍다. Picture and 찍다 is the verb to take a picture. So they always come in pairs. Ok. Well, are you ready to take a look at the grammar?
Mingyeong: 네.

Lesson focus

Keith: Mingyeong, what are we taking a look at?
Mingyeong: -지 말고 -(으)세요
Keith: This means "don't do A but do B" and this structure is a combination of?
Mingyeong: -지 말다
Keith: Which means "don't do it" and what else?
Mingyeong: -아/어/여세요
Keith: Which means "please do it." You can use this expression when telling someone not to do something and also to do something else.
Mingyeong: And you can sometimes change 말고 (malgo) to 마시고 (masigo) to make the sentence more polite, but it isn't always necessary because the politeness level can be expressed through the end of the sentence.
Keith: Right. So what that means is even if you don't use 마시고 and you just say 말고, you can always express the politeness in that last part.
Mingyeong: with 아/어/여세요.
Keith: Right. So how do we construct this in a sentence?
Mingyeong: You need a verb stem plus -지 말고 plus a new verb stem and -(으)세요
Keith: For example?
Mingyeong: 놀다 means "to play" and 공부하다 means "to study" so you add the verb stem, 놀 plus 지 말고
Keith: So that becomes?
Mingyeong: 놀지 말고
Keith: Don't play. And what's that second part?
Mingyeong: 공부하 plus 세요.
Keith: So that becomes?
Mingyeong: 공부하세요.
Keith: Study, please study. So let's put those two together.
Mingyeong: 놀지 말고 공부하세요.
Keith: "Don't play, but study." And you sound like my mother. Except the 세요. She's a little more emphatic and less polite. Alright. So how did it come out in this dialogue?
Mingyeong: The guide said, 박물관에서 떠들지 말고 조용히 하세요.
Keith: In the museum, don't make noise and be quiet.
Mingyeong: He also said, 그리고 아무것도 만지지 말고 눈으로만 보세요.
Keith: Don't touch anything and just look with your eyes.
Mingyeong: And the guide also said, 사진 찍지 말고, 그냥 보세요.
Keith: Don't take a picture, just look.
Mingyeong: And he also said, 돌아다니지 말고, 여기 있으세요.
Keith: Don't wander about, just stay here. And finally, what's the last thing he said with -지 말고 and 세요?
Mingyeong: 그럼 다른 데 가지 말고 화장실만 가세요.
Keith: Don't go anywhere else and just go to the bathroom. Alright, Mingyeong. To wrap things up can we have two more examples?
Mingyeong: 전화하지 말고 직접 오세요. (jeonhwahaji malgo jikjeob oseyo)
Keith: "Don't call me, but just come here directly. Come here yourself."
Mingyeong: Or I could tell my friend, 이거 사지 말고, 저거 사. (igeo saji malgo jeogeo sa)
Keith: "Don't buy this one. Buy that one."

Outro

Keith: That just about does it for today. Ok, well, 여러분 we've got a nice little goodbye for you.
Mingyeong: 그냥 가지 말고 comment 남기세요.
Keith: Don't just leave! Leave us a comment. Well, thanks for listening.
