안녕하세요. 여승혜입니다. 여러분은 아침에 일어나면 무엇을 가장 먼저 하세요? 오늘은 하루 종일 날씨가 참 좋았습니다. 이렇게 날씨가 좋은 날에는 만사 다 제쳐두고 빨래부터 하게 됩니다. 오늘도 아침에 일어나자 마자 창문으로 스며들어오는 햇빛을 보고 기분 좋게 세탁기를 돌렸습니다. 그리고 나서 쓰레기를 내어 놓으러 나가는 길에 무심코 우편함을 보니, 흰색 봉투가 꽂혀 있었습니다. 한국에서 군대에 있는 친구에게서 온 반가운 편지였습니다. 꼬불꼬불 휘갈겨 쓴 글씨체가 예전과 변한 게 하나도 없었습니다. 한국에서는 이미 대부분의 사람들이 편지 대신 이메일을 쓰고 있지만, 유일하게 아직도 편지가 활발하게 이용되고 있는 곳이 군대입니다. 군인들은 자유로이 인터넷을 이용하기 힘들기 때문에 이렇게 시간이 걸리더라도 편지를 쓰게 됩니다. 저도 어릴 적 이후로 편지를 거의 쓰지 않았었지만, 일본에 유학 오고 나서부터 다시 친구들에게 편지를 쓰기 시작했습니다. 외로워서 그런 걸까요? 군인인 그 친구와 저는 가족들과 떨어져 산다는 점이 비슷합니다. 그래서 그런지 우린 서로 잘 통하는 편입니다. 친구의 편지에는 지난 크리스마스에 집에 다녀오지 못하고 군대에 남아 있었다는 이야기, 집이 그립다는 이야기 등이 적혀 있었습니다. 저도 작년 추석, 한국으로 돌아가지 못 하고 일본에 남아, 혼자 추석 음식을 만들어 먹던 기억을 떠올렸습니다. 반가운 친구의 소식 때문이었을까, 오늘은 하루 종일 기분이 좋았습니다. 저에게 이렇게 편지는, 반복되는 일상에 자그마한 활력소가 되어 주네요. 여러분들께서는 편지 자주 쓰세요? 이메일이 그 자리를 대신하고 있나요? 오늘은 보고 싶은 사람들에게 편지를 써 보시는 건 어떨까요? 저도 이제 친구에게 답장을 써야 하겠네요. 그럼, 오늘도 좋은 하루 되시고, 다음시간에 또 만나요.

i've kept postcards, letters for years and it's fun to read them after a while even though i know the content

It is so difficult to listen to fast spoken Korean:sad: But this is very good practice, and I am hoping to beable to understand everything perfectly in the future ~~

Welcome to South Korea!!!!!

I have lived and worked in South Korea for almost 2 years now. I lived on the mainland for a year....and now I am on Jeju Island. I plan to stay on this island for a very long time!!

WWW.Koreanclass101.com is a great source to learn the Korean language but,........getting out and meeting the Korean people is your best resouce! Since you have just recently arrived to S. Korea.....everyday life may be intimidating? My advise is to bypass your fears and meet the people of your community. The more you avoid foreigners who speak your language....the faster you will learn "REAL KOREAN"!! : )

It will take time.....but you will be rewarded with the satisfaction of accomplishment.

Many Koreans are curious about FOREIGNERS and they too will be interested in learning English. You would be surprised how fast you will learn??

Remember....."Avoid hanging-out with many foreigners....unless they speak Korean!" I learned very little last year because my co-workers and I spoke English al of the time to each other because that was comfortable. In my last 11 months on Jeju Island....I have learned a lot of Korean because I was forced to communicate with Koreans to manage my everyday life. Koreans are the nicest people and I have the experience abroad to justify it. Prior to S. Korea....I worked in China and Taiwan. Those country were OK, but just NOT as rewarding.
