Hi, everyone, I'm Jaehwi. In this video, we'll be talking about Top six Korean fairy tales. Let's see what we have. |
(Heungbuwa nolbu) "Heungbu and Nolbu" |
so Heungbu and Nolbu are brothers, Heungbu is kind of kind, good, nice guy, but poor; Nolbu is the older brother of Heungbu, and he’s mean, bad, but rich guy. So it's kind of following the common storyline, like Nolbu had a lot of money, Heungbu wanted to borrow a little bit of rice or like something to eat, but the older brother denied it. One day, you know, Heungbu the younger brother did something good for a little bird, and the bird actually gave a lot of gift, so that Heungbu became rich and Nolbu became poor. So it's something like, you know, if you be a good guy then you can be rich or be happy, if you're mean guy you’ll be just you know become poor. And I can say, |
(Heungbuwa nolbureul ilgeumyeonseo heungbucheoreom chakage saraya doegetdago saenggakaetsseumnida.) "I thought I wanted to be a good guy while reading the story Heungbu and Nolbu." |
(Hyonyeo simcheong) "A Filial Daughter, Sim Chong" |
The main character is a very good girl whose name is Sim Chong. And here we have the words 효녀(hyonyeo), which means the girl who sacrifice a lot for her parents. |
(hyonyeo Eoryeosseul ttae hyonyeo simcheong iyagireul deutgo mani seulpeotsseumnida.) |
"When I was reading the story the filial daughter, Simchong, when I was a kid, I was so sad.” |
So anyway she became queen and then she later invited her father to where she lives, so they can be happy living together. |
(Tokkiui gan) "The Rabbit's Liver" |
So in this story have three characters, a rabbit, a turtle, and a king of the sea. And one day the king of sea became ill, so his doctor said that if you just eat rabbits liver then you’ll become healthy again, so the king asked turtle to go to the land and get a liver of a rabbit. So the turtle went to the land and, you know, ask rabbit to go to the castle in the sea to see the king. So rabbit was happy to go there, and later found out that, you know, actually king just wanted to have the rabbit’s liver. So rabbit said, “sorry, but, you know, I really wanna help you but my liver is on the land, so I have to go up there and bring my liver back.” And the entire castle, they thought is true, so they just let rabbit travel to the land, and then later when rabbit gets to land he just escaped. |
I don't know what's the moral of the story, like, is it something like you have to be smart wherever you are in a bad situation? But I thought it's kind of funny, it's very interesting to see how rabbit react even though it was making a lie, like, it was kind of smart, so I like this kind of story. |
So I can say, |
(Tokiui gan iyagireul ilgeumyeonseo tokicheoreom saraya doegetdago saenggakaetsseumnida.) |
Which means “Reading the story ‘The Rabbit's Liver,’ I thought that I had be smart like this rabbit." |
(Gyeonuwa jingnyeo) "Gyeonu and Jiknyeo" |
Gyeonu is a guy, and Jiknyeo is a girl, and they married and they loved each other so much, you know, having very lovely time together, like, but no work, like, they didn't work or anything. And then God later found out that they just loved each other but they didn't do any work, so he really got upset. Gyeonu and Jiknyeo got separated, God allow them to see each other only once a year which is July 7th in lunar calendar. |
(Hanguk saramdeureun chirwolchilseoge biga naerimyeon gyeonuwa jingnyeoga nunmureul heulrineun georago saenggakamnida.) “On July 7th of the lunar calendar, when there’s rain, Korean people think it is tears from Gyeonu and Jiknyeo." |
(Seonnyeowa namukkun) "The Fairy and the Woodcutter" |
So it's kind of a story of a guy who was kind of threatening a girl because he wanted to get married, so I still don't know if it is really good story for kids or not. So in a sentence you can say, |
(Seonnyeowa namukkuneun oraeorae hangbokage salji motaetsseumnida.) "The fairy and the woodcutter could not live happily forever." |
(Geum dokkiwa eun dokki) "The Gold Ax and the Silver Ax" |
So here we have the word 금(geum) which means “gold,” and 은(eun) which means “silver,” and 도끼(dokki) means “axe.” |
This story has two main characters, the woodcutter and the wizard. So the woodcutter was taking a rest in the lake but something happens so he lost his ex in the lake. So there's one wizard who lived in that lake, he just showed up and asked him if he lost the iron axe, but actually on the axe of the woodcutter was a really rotten wooden axe, so he said, no, mine is very old and bad axe; and the wizard got a silver axe and asked him if that’s yours, and then woodcutter said, no, that's not mine. And finally the wizard got the gold axe, and then the woodcutter is so good guy, so he kept saying, no, that's not mine. And the wizard got moved and he gave all the iron, silver, good axes to the woodcutter. This is kind of a simple story, but just saying just be honest, then you can get more than what you have. |
So in a sentence, you can say, |
(Geum dokkiwa eun dokki iyagireul ilgeumyeonseo aideureun jeongjikaejeoya doegetdago saenggakamnida.) |
“Reading the story The Gold Ax and the Silver Ax, kids think that they have to be honest.” |
Ok, that's the end! That's all the Top six Korean fairy tales. Make sure to subscribe and I'll see you next time. |
(Daeum sigane boepgetsseumnida) |
안녕히 계세요 (annyeonghi gyeseyo). |
