Becky: Talking about your age. In this lesson, you’ll learn how to ask someone's age and to say yours in Korean.
Body
Becky: Here's the informal way to ask 'How old are you?' in Korean.
Kyejin: [Normal] 나이가 어떻게 되세요?(naiga eotteoke doeseyo?)
Becky: First is a word meaning 'age'
Kyejin: [Normal] 나이 [Slow] 나이 (nai)
Becky: Next is the subject marking particle
Kyejin: [Normal] 가 [Slow] 가(ga)
Becky: Next is the word meaning 'how'
Kyejin: [Normal] 어떻게 [Slow] 어떻게 (eotteoke )
Becky: Last is the word meaning 'to be'
Kyejin: [Normal] 되세요 [Slow] 되세요(doeseyo)
Becky: Note the rising intonation. Listen again to the informal question meaning 'How old are you?'
Kyejin: [Slow] 나이가 어떻게 되세요? [Normal] 나이가 어떻게 되세요?
Becky: Now, imagine you're speaking to a stranger. Here's the formal way to ask, 'How old are you?'
Kyejin: [Normal] 연세가 어떻게 되십니까?(yeonsega eotteoke doesimnikka?)

Kyejin: There’s something called Korean age. You are one year old as soon as you are born. The next calendar year, you will age. So it is very common to hear Koreans ask "What year were you born?" to mean "How old are you?"
