Question about politeness levels

Postby patrickxue.ES_231018 » June 3rd, 2016 3:51 pm

Hi

First off thank you for the lessons, I really enjoy them.
I have a random question, I learnt recently that Christianity is fairly big in Korea, and that made me wonder: when speaking to God, i.e. for prayers and things, what kind of politeness level would be used? Would the honorific infix be used? I would assume so, but I can think of arguments for various levels being used. If you could shed any light on this, I'd be very interested. My question is also about all religions, not just Christianity, especially if there are differences.

감사합니다!

Hi patrickxue,

Thank you for posting. While the honorific suffix may differ according to religion, usually people attach the honorific suffix '님'(nim). Having said that, Christians usually refer to 'God' as '하나님'(hananim).

Best,
Lyn
