The first of March in Korea commemorates 삼일운동, when on March 1st, 1919, Korea's independence movement held bold demonstrations during the Japanese occupation. There was a subsequent crackdown by the Japanese, and during that time an unusually courageous 16-yr old girl student by the name of "Yoo Kwan Soon " (유관순) left Seoul and returned to her home town. There she made hundreds of Korean flags and restarted the independence demonstrations. For inspiring people to peacefully shout 'Independence Forever!" and wave the flag of their beloved nation, Yoo Kwan Soon was arrested, imprisoned, and tortured to death. To this day Yoo Kwan Soon is revered as "Big Sister Yoo Kwan Soon" (유관순 누나), a national hero of Korea.
Way to go Big Sister! We love you! (This photo was apparently taken by the Japanese after she had been arrested.)
