What's with the peace sign?

Just a curious (probably silly) question here but~~

Almost every picture i've seen of a Korean person whether it's a male or female, someone is usually always holding up the 2 finger peace sign. Maybe there's a different story behind it that I don't know about? Maybe its a simple always accepted pose to avoid unintentional embarrassing poses? Or maybe is this a way to actually promote peace?
