When to drop markers?

Postby Gudrun » March 11th, 2010 2:21 am

Even after over a year of studying Korean, I still get confused about when to use topic markers versus subject markers. And also when to use/not use object markers. My teacher said sometimes it just sounds more natural to omit the markers, but since I'm a foreigner, I can't tell what sounds more natural. Could somebody please explain this a little more to me and kindly give me some examples? I would really appreciate it.

Let me five you a little example here. :wink:
Your friend asks you "what did you do last night?"
and you say " I read a book"
어젯밤 뭐 했어? / 책을 읽었어.
but "책 읽었어" is more natural.

영화를 볼 거예요.--->영화 볼 거예요.
신발을 샀어. ----> 신발 샀어.

I think it's only for the conversation and informal situations.
영화 볼 것입니다. sounds strange a little.
영화를 볼 것입니다. is better.

신발 샀습니다. --->신발을 샀습니다.

I just realized this. Thanks to you!!
Omitting the object markers may be in the natural converation.

what do you think? 8)

'ConverSation' luv, conversation haha!

I would agree with that, however, when writing a dialog between characters it seems best to write according to the 말투 they use.

Omission of Topic and Subject Markers?

Postby Gudrun » March 11th, 2010 2:50 pm

Julia, thanks so much for your reply!

Please, could you give me examples of when to use a topic marker versus a subject marker. And when it would be better to not use a topic or subject marker?

Thanks.
