Should we learn Hangul before starting Lessons?

Postby samwY » October 5th, 2009 2:18 am

Should I be able to read Hangul before starting the lessons?

I am completely new to Korean but have gone through 8 Newbie Lessons.

Is this the best method to learn Korean?

Hangul --> Newbie Lessons --> Beginner Lessons

Or do is it better to learn Hangul later than earlier?

Please give me your incite

When I started learning Korean I didn't want to learn hangeul because I was too lazy  Even though I was using romanization, I was learning pretty slowly. But, after I learned, I was able to learn phrases much quicker and my pronunciation became much better because I was able to read exactly how it was supposed to sound. To learn the letters themselves, I used this website http://www.aeriagloris.com/LearnKorean/ and to learn how they sound, I used this one video, it's funny and cute http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NDkIpvaAVL0. With these, I had a basic grasp of hangeul in 2 days. Good luck!

If you want to learn Korean beyond set phrases, then it is important to know Hangul. As the other person said, it helps you pronounce accurately. And besides, you are not going to find romanisation for all korean texts!

It's easy to learn. After that, you will never want to read romanisation again!

Thanks, I'm working on it now actually. Hopefully will be "fluent" in reading within a few days. It's fun!

You should kinda learn it around the same time as you're learning your first beginner phrases and basic vocab. You could burn out if you focus on one thing too much ;)
