ending sentences/thoughts with ~~구만 // ~~만 // 구요

Postby molores » June 9th, 2009 5:15 pm

Does anyone know what the ending 구만 or 만 or 구요is? At first i thought 구만 was 그만 as in stop and 만 as in only but i keep hearing people say a 명사 and then end with 구만 or 만 and i have no idea what the nuance is for this ending? is it just a declarative ending. As for the 구요 ending is it the same as 구나 as in "so it's like this.."

thanks!

I'll take a guess and say that the 구요(고요) ending you were seeing might have been used to add to a previous statement, ie. 맛없어요. 가격도 비싸고요. Unless it's reported speech... i.e. 비싸다고요? Do you have an example?

If this were the case it would be ~군요 (i.e. 갈 길이 멀군요 [멀구나]).

hey! thanks for the reply... here's a couple i found on the net..

곧 결혼하겠구만
머리 빠지는 구만.
정말 맛나 보이는 요리구만.

I'm thinking 만 and 구요 have similar meanings?

or is 구요 really 고(요)?

hope this helps

농구가 하고 싶다구요?
돈이 풀렸다구요?
스트레스는 받지 마시구요.
친다는 군요 추측일수도 있구요

It's colloquial error of 구먼.
and similar with 군 or 군요 but 구요.
It shows the speaker is focusing on the new info or his mind what he is talking about.

곧 결혼하겠군.
머리 빠지는군.
정말 맛나 보이는 요리군.

Of course attaching 요 makes them polite.

Two above have same meaning with _고 하다/_고 말하다

농구가 하고 싶다고 했어요?
돈이 풀렸다고 했어요?

Two below have meaning of "and/or".

스트레스는 받지 마시고 (편히 계세)요.
친다는군요 추측일 수도 있고 (아닐 수도 있어)요.

Now you will see what's right among 구요 and 고요.
Did I make things clear?

molores, I think that colloquially (and so also on the internet) people often pronounce 고 as 구. Women do that more than men I think because it makes them sound "cute".
unfortunately having half a set of Korean genes doesn't come w/ a language gene

True.
Actually no one pronounce as ~고요 these days.
Only in the textbook I guess.
Probably that's why 고 노무현 전대통령's habit was so unique and became popular.

"맞습니다. 맞고요.."

It's same with -군.
Actually -구먼 is right, not -구만.
But everybody says -구만 these days.
Maybe because -구먼 sounds like kinda old feeling I guess.

It has the nuance of self-talking that shows the speaker is focusing on the new information.

한국어를 잘해서 좋겠구먼.
= 한국어를 잘해서 좋겠군.
(I guess) you must be happy since you're good at speaking Korean.

이게 그거구먼.
= 이게 그거군.
(I found) this is the one.

에밀리가 이제 오는구먼.
= 에밀리가 이제 오는군.
Now (I see) Emily's coming.

:)

sounds like its kind of like ...구나 then? or is that more of a 'mildly-suprised-talking-to-ones-self-out-loud' kind of thing?

from my understanding, 구나 is an informal version of 군요.. so it would be the same thing then. someone correct me if i'm wrong ^^
