~~을테

Postby molores » April 7th, 2009 2:02 pm

sorry if this has been posted elsewhere but i couldn't find it in a lesson so i was wondering how do you use ~~을테 as in 못할테지만 or 만날테니까.. is there other ways to say this without the 을테?

I have always thought of suffixes that begin with -ㄹ테- as combinations of -ㄹ까 and other suffixes. It's like a subjective prediction of the future that seems probable from your perspective, but may or may not actually happen. For example, -ㄹ테니까 combines the sense of will with because. 비가 올테니까 우산을 가지고 가. Because it's going to rain, bring an umbrella. -ㄹ테지만 would combine will with but. 우리가 다시 안 만날테지만 너를 잊지 않도록 약속해. We'll never see eachother again, but I promise to never forget you.

~을테지만, ~을테니까 's "테" comes from 터 .

터 means place, foundation, ground, site. So ~~~을 테지만 is ~을 터이지만, (literally, it's a place/situation where.... but) and ~~~을 테니까 means ~~~을 터이니까 (literally, it's a place/situation where.... so).

So, like Jeff said, that has the meaning of "naturally it would be + but/because" .

Different ways to say the same thing would be:

만날테지만 = 만나겠지만, 만날 거지만
못 할테지만 = 못 하겠지만, 못 할 거지만

:)
