Postby timandyou » April 13th, 2011 8:12 am

Hello everyone~~ :wink:
This is Tim from KC101.com.
Throughout this post, I'd like to mention about 접미사 (- 기) "a noun suffix" and 의존명사 (- 는 것) "bound noun".
Forget about those technical terms - 접미사 & 의존명사! HOWEVER, remember those "--기" & "--는 것" that make VERB into NOUN.

Please keep this in mind first!!!
You MUST know about 동사어간 "Verb Stem" (it's a MUST!!!)
(if you don't know about them well, please give a look at - http://www.koreanclass101.com/forum/vie ... php?t=2805)
That's all~~!!! ^o^ :P :P :P

Okay, let's play~~
Here are examples...

1. 하다 "to do"
=> 하 "verb stem" + 기 => 하기 "doing" - it's a noun (a gerund) !!!
=> 하 "verb stem" + 는 것 => 하는 것 "doing /to do" - it's a noun (a gerund)!!!
ex) a. 숙제 하기가 싫어요! "Doing homework is dislikeable!"
(숙제 하다 => 숙제 하 + 기 => 숙제 하기 "doing homework" - it's a subject in the sentence. (that's why 가 "subject particle" is attached to the subject))
b. 숙제 하는 것이 싫어요! "Doing homework is dislikeable!"
(숙제 하다 => 숙제 하 + 는 것 => 숙제 하는 것 "doing homework" - it's a subject in the sentence. (that's why 이 "subject particle" is attached to the S))

2. 보다 "to see"
=> 보 "verb stem" + 기 => 보기 "seeing" - it's a noun (a gerund)!!!
=> 보 "verb stem" + 는 것 => 보는 것 "seeing / to see" - it's a noun (a gerund)!!!
ex) a. 영화 보기가 힘들어요! "Watching a movie (or Being able to see a movie) is difficult!"
(영화 보다 => 영화 보 + 기 => 영화 보기 "watching or seeing a movie" - it's a subject in the sentence (so, 가 is attached!)
b. 영화 보는 것이 힘들어요! "Watching a movie (or Being able to see a movie) is difficult!"
(영화 보다 => 영화 보 + 는 것 => 영화 보는 것 "watching a movie" - it's a subject in the sentence (so, 이 is attached!)

3. 먹다 "to eat"
=> 먹 "verb stem" + 기 => 먹기 "eating" - it's a noun (a gerund)!!!
=> 먹 "verb stem" + 는 것 => 먹는 것 "eating" - it's a noun (a gerund)!!!
ex) a. 밥 먹기가 힘들어. "Eating a meal is difficult."
(밥 먹다 => 밥 먹 + 기 => 밥 먹기 "eating a meal" - it's a subject in the sentence (so, 가 is attached!)
b. 밥 먹는 것이 힘들어. "Eating a meal is difficult."
(밥 먹다 => 밥 먹 + 는 것 => 밥 먹는 것 "eating a meal" - it's a subject in the sentence (so, 이 is attached!)

4. 읽다 "to read"
=> 읽 "verb stem" + 기 => 읽기 "reading" - it's a noun (a gerund)!!!
=> 읽 "verb stem" + 는 것 => 읽는 것 "reading" - it's a noun (a gerund)!!!
ex) a. 책 읽기가 쉬워. "Reading a book is easy."
(책 읽다 => 책 읽 + 기 => 책 읽기 "reading a book" - it's a subject in the sentence (so, 가 is attached!)
b. 책 읽는 것이 쉬워. "Reading a book is easy."
(책 읽다 => 책 읽 + 는 것 => 책 읽는 것 "reading a book" - it's a subject in the sentence (so, 이 is attached!)
