Hi,

I always hear Korean people say ....시고요 or ...고요 at the end of the sentence. For example, ....감사드리고요.. or 공무하고요....
How to use it and when to you it?

About your question, 'verb stem' + (시)고요...
Here are things to remember for you before studying Korean any further.
Avery K-verbs consists of two elements - its 'verb stem' & its 'sentence ending'.
That's very important to know about!!

Okay... about -(시) first,
-시- is a 'honorific suffix' that expresses respects to the subject of the sentence when attached to a 'verb stem'.

Next, about 'verb stem',
here are some of examples -
가다 "to go" - "가" is a 'verb stem'
하다 "to do" - "하" is a 'verb stem'
먹다 "to eat" - "먹" is a 'verb stem'

Last, the rule of the expression you asked about is 'VERB STEM' + (시)고요.
with a verb 가다 "to go", 가 'verb stem' + 고요 becomes 가고요 "informal sentence ending of 가다" or
가 + 시고요 becomes 가시고요 "formal sentence ending of 가다"...
with a verb 하다 "to do", 하 'verb stem' + 고요 becomes 하고요 "informal sentence ending of 하다"or
하 + 시고요 becomes 하시고요 "formal sentence ending of 하다"... and so on...

Ah, when do you use this ending?
It's very hard to clearly define its usage but, I'll make it simple for you.
You use this ending, when you meet and talk with someone you don't know well.
-(시)고요 is a bit informal form than - (습/읍)입니다.

For example, you can say to others (Korean),
저는 수정입니다 (but it's a bit too formal) so you can say it like this - 저는 수정이고요...
저는 학생입니다 (but it's a bit too formal) so you can say it like this - 저는 학생이고요...

What about -(시)고요...?
Here are some examples...
이 분은 저의 어머니입니다 (but it's a bit too formal) so you can say it like this - 이 분은 저의 어머니이시고요...
이 분은 저의 할아버지입니다 (but it's a bit too formal) so you can say it like this - 이 분은 저의 할아버지이시고요...

I guess you already know the usage of each 고 and 요, right?


Example of 고

저는 학생이고 내년에 졸업합니다.
같이 점심을 먹고 영화를 봅시다.


Example of 요

저는 미국에서 왔어요.
우리 같이 가요.


However, you could use these together when you want to leave some aftereffects.
The aftereffects are needed when...

You are saying uncertain words.
You have more informations to say.
You don't want to be seen rude by saying definitely.
You want to keep your words up from any interruptions.
etc...
