I am lost as to what sound the "ㅆ" make. I assumed they are a "ss" but they seem to be silent in this example? How does one know when to pronounce or not pronounce them?

Thank you for your comment and this is one of the rules that comes to batchim!

Have you listened to those lessons yet?

We have five rules for the batchims and in this case, ㅆ is used to push the next consonant to be doubled which would be
마싯껫따.

So only one stays and another ㅅ for both of words are pushed to the next consonant to create double sound.
