Anybody knows why 고맙다 becomes 고마워? Because from what I know When the verb stem enda with ㅗorㅏ the ㅂ is replaced with a 오 eg 돕다 becomes 도와. Following this rule 고맙다 should become 고마와 is this an exception to the above rule?

Thank you for sharing a good question.

Actually, you seem to know the earlier version of grammar standard.
It had been changed back in 1988, and now when all ㅂ irregular verbs meet vowel ending become -워 form except only 곱다 and 돕다.
곱다 > 곱+ㅏ > 고와
돕다 > 도+ㅏ > 도와

So, 도와 is the exception, not 고마워 side.
