Jaehwi: Hi everyone. Welcome back to Korean Weekly Words. I am Jaehwi. Let’s see what we have for this week. This week’s theme is, school supplies. Okay let’s see what we have.
The first word is 공책 (gongchaek) which means “notebook.” 공 (gong) means “empty,” 책 (chaek) means “book.” So it literally means empty book or book without anything inside. With that word, you can say 책가방에 공책을 넣었습니다. (Chaekgabange gongchaegeul neoeotsseumnida.) which means “I put a notebook inside my backpack.”
Okay next we have 책가방 (chaekgabang) which means “backpack.” 책 (chaek) means “book” and 가방 (gabang) means “bag.” So it literally means a bag for books. With that word, you can say 학생들 사이에서는 검은색 책가방이 인기가 많습니다. (Haksaengdeul saieseoneun geomeunsaek chaekgabangi ingiga mansseumnida.) which means “In Korea, black backpacks are popular among kids, students.”
Okay next we have 자 (ja) meaning “ruler.” With that word, you can say 어렸을 때 학교에 갈 때에는 필통에 10센티 자를 넣고 다녔습니다. (Eoryeoseul ttae hakgyoe gal ttaeeneun piltonge sipsenti jareul neoko danyeotsseumnida.) which means ah which means, “When I go to school, I used to put a 10 centimeter ruler inside my pencil case.”
Okay next we have 풀 (pul) which means “glue.” With that word, you can say 신문지를 풀로 스케치북 위에 붙였습니다. (Sinmunjireul pullo seukechibuk wie butyeotsseumnida.) which means “I glued a newspaper article on a sketchbook.”
Okay next we have 지우개 (jiugae) which means “eraser.” With that word, you can say 학생이었을 때 친구들과 지우개 게임을 자주 했습니다. (Haksaengieoseul ttae chingudeulgwa jiugae geimeul jaju haetsseumnida.) which means “When I was a student, I used to play eraser game with my friends at school.” So it’s something like you flip erasers and then if your eraser became on the top of the other’s eraser, then you win.
Okay next we have the end. Okay that’s all for this week. I hope you liked some of the words that we introduced. Okay I will see you next week. 다음 시간에 뵙겠습니다. (Daeum sigane boepgetsseumnida.) 안녕히 계세요. (Annyeonghi gyeseyo.)
