INTRODUCTION |
Seol: 안녕하세요. 윤설입니다. (Annyeonghaseyo. Yunseorimnida.) |
Keith: Hi, and I'm Keith. Depending on the Weather, We'll Visit a Korean Park. |
Keith: Seol, what are we talking about? 이 레슨은 뭐에 대해서예요? |
Seol: It's -에 따라. |
Keith: That's regarding 'depending on'. Depending on if the weather is nice, or depending on if my friends are there. Can we have a sample sentence? |
Seol: 날씨에 따라 달라요. |
Keith: Depending on the weather, it's different. So remember to listen in to the conversation for... |
Seol: -에 따라 |
Keith: Ok. Where does this conversation take place? |
Seol: This conversation takes place on a guided tour. |
Keith: The conversation is, again, between a guide and the tourists. Therefore? |
Seol: The speakers will be speaking polite language, 존댓말. |
Keith: Ok. Well are you ready to go on tour? |
Seol: Sure. |
Keith: Let's listen in. |
DIALOGUE |
Seol: 한 번 더 천천히. |
Keith: One more time, slowly. |
Seol: 영어로 한 번 더. |
Keith: One more time, with the English. |
관광객1: 가이드님, 내일은 어디 가요? |
Keith: Where are we going tomorrow? |
가이드: 날씨에 따라 달라요. 날씨가 좋으면 유명한 공원에 갈 거예요. |
Keith: It depends on the weather. If the weather's good, we're going to a famous park. |
관광객2: 몇 시에 출발해요? |
Keith: What time are we leaving? |
가이드: 계획이 바뀌었어요. 아침 7시에 출발해요. |
Keith: The plans have been changed. We're leaving at 7:00 in the morning. |
관광객1: 그렇게 빨리요? |
Keith: That early? |
가이드: 네. 시간에 따라 차가 많이 막힐 수도 있어요. |
Keith: Yes. Depending on the time, we might get into a traffic jam. |
관광객2: 그런데 왜 이렇게 계획이 자주 바뀌어요? |
Keith: But why do the plans keep changing? |
가이드: 뭐... 제 기분에 따라 바꾸는 거예요. |
Keith: Well, I'm just changing it depending on my mood. |
POST CONVERSATION BANTER |
Seol: This is a very common conversation during a guided tour, |
Keith: Yeah, it's usually really busy and packed with a tight schedule, especially the tours that Korean people go on. |
Seol: Yeah, it's very Korean, but at the same time a lot of people hate having to do all the things so quickly. |
Keith: Yeah. We've got to go here. We've got to go there. |
Seol: Yeah, and we have to follow the guidance by the guide, so a lot of tour companies in Korea are selling products that are called 자유 여행 package. |
Keith: What's the word again? |
Seol: 자유 여행. |
Keith: Freedom travel, literally. And what's that mean? |
Seol: The tour package that just has the flight tickets and the hotel rooms included, and everything else, you do it on your own. |
Keith: And that is becoming more and more popular with the younger people. |
Seol: Sure. |
Keith: But beside 자유 여행, freedom travel, what's a typical guided tour like? |
Seol: Well, a guide guides you. So she takes you to the very famous sight-seeing places like Namdaemun, Myeongdong... |
Keith: Right. So usually it's very, very structured. You go here, you go here, you go here, you eat here. You eat this. |
Seol: And you have to buy this or at this shop. |
Keith: Exactly. So it's very, very structured, and I think a lot of people will be enjoying the 자유 여행. |
Seol: Yeah, I prefer 자유 여행, too. |
Keith: But I can see some people that like the structured, guided tours as well. |
Seol: Yeah, sure. |
Keith: Ok. Well, let's listen in to the vocabulary. |

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE |
Keith: Ok. Well, Seol, do you know what we're doing now? |
Seol: Yeah, of course. A closer look at the usage for some of the words, right? |
Keith: Right. So what's the first word we're taking a look at? |
Seol: The first word is... Actually it's two words, 바뀌다 and 바꾸다. |
Keith: Ok. Let's do it one by one. What's that first one? |
Seol: 바뀌다 |
Keith: To be changed or to be exchanged. |
Seol: Yeah, and when you use this word in a sentence, it is conjugated like 바뀌어요, and 바뀌었어요 in the past tense, but not many people pronounce them that way. |
Keith: So how do most people pronounce it, then? |
Seol: 바뀌어요 becomes 바껴요 and 바뀌었어요 becomes 바꼈어요. |
Keith: Yes, so remember this when you hear someone saying 바꼈어요, not 바뀌었어요. Ok. So what's that other word that we're taking a look at? |
Seol: 바꾸다 |
Keith: To change something. So the past tense for these two words can sound a bit similar, actually. |
Seol: Yeah, the past tense for 바뀌다, to be changed, is pronounced 바꼈어요. |
Keith: And the past tense for 바꾸다, to change, is pronounced, 바꿨어요. |
Seol: So, 바꼈어요. and 바꿨어요. |
Keith: Can we have that one more time? That was really tough. |
Seol: Yeah. 바꼈어요. |
Keith: To be changed. |
Mingyeong: 바꿨어요. |
Keith: To change. So there we go. The difference is one is the passive and one is not. Ok. Well, I think it's time to take a look at our grammar. |
Lesson focus
|
Keith: Seol, what's our grammar point for this lesson? |
Seol: It's -에 따라(서) |
Keith: Depending on. This structure comes from the verb... |
Seol: 따르다 |
Keith: Which literally means "to follow," so -에 따라(서) can be literally translated as "by following," and there, we can generally translate it as "depending on." |
Seol: The last letter, 서 (seo) can be dropped and becomes -에 따라, too. |
Keith: Right. So how do we construct this? |
Seol: You can add this structure after a noun. For example, 가격 is price, so if you want to say 'depending on the price', you can say 가격에 따라서. |
Keith: Depending on the price. Or more literally, following the price. Ok, and how was it used in this dialogue? |
Seol: The guide said, 날씨에 따라 달라요. |
Keith: It depends on the weather. But more specifically, it means, depending on the weather, it's going to change. Or it's different. |
Seol: And the guide also said, 시간에 따라 차가 많이 막힐 수도 있어요. |
Keith: Depending on the time, we might get into a traffic jam. What else did he say? |
Seol: He said, 제 기분에 따라 바꾸는 거예요. |
Keith: I'm just changing it depending on my mood. |
Seol: Not a good guide. |
Keith: Well he seems like he's on the 자유 여행 himself. On his own freedom tour. |
Seol: What a good expression. Ok. Before we wrap this up, can we also have a couple of sample sentences? |
Seol: Sure. 상황에 따라서 달라요. |
Keith: "It depends on the situation." And, of course, this can be used very, very frequently in everyday conversation. Seol, what are you doing in two years? |
Seol: Well, 상황에 따라 달라요. |
Keith: It depends on the situation. Alright. Well, what's another sample sentence? |
Seol: 날씨에 따라 옷을 다르게 입어요. |
Keith: "I dress differently depending on the weather." |
Outro
|
Keith: Ok. Well, that just about does it for this lesson. See everyone next time. |
Seol: 다음 시간에 또 봐요. |
