INTRODUCTION
Mihyeon: ์•ˆ๋…•ํ•˜์„ธ์š”, ์—ฌ๋Ÿฌ๋ถ„. ๋ฏธํ˜„์ž…๋‹ˆ๋‹ค.
Junsu: Hi I am Junsu.
Hyunwoo: ์•ˆ๋…•ํ•˜์„ธ์š”. ์„ ํ˜„์šฐ์ž…๋‹ˆ๋‹ค. I Study Korean as Soon as I Get Up. That was the title, by the way.
Junsu: Everyone should do that.
Mihyeon: ์ด์ƒํ•œ๋ฐ์š”.
Hyunwoo: Well itโ€™s an ideal title.
Mihyeon: ์ •๋ง ์ด๋Ÿฐ ์‚ฌ๋žŒ ์žˆ์„๊นŒ์š”?
Hyunwoo: I do. I do study Korean as soon as I get up.
Junsu: Really!
Hyunwoo: No, not really, sorry. ๊ทธ๋ ‡์ง€๋งŒ the grammar is what we are going to learn how to say in Korean today. So what are we going to learn today?
Junsu: We are going to learn how to say as soon as you do something or as soon as something happens.
Hyunwoo: Thatโ€™s right. ๋ฏธํ˜„์”จ.
Mihyeon:
Before we go into what we are going to learn today, letโ€™s briefly go over what we learned in the last lesson. Do you remember Mihyeon ๊ธฐ์–ต๋‚˜์„ธ์š”?
Mihyeon: ๋ฐฐ์šฐ๊ธด ๋ฐฐ์› ๋Š”๋ฐ ๊ธฐ์–ต์ด ์•ˆ ๋‚˜์š”.
Junsu: Do you really not remember or was that just an example?
Mihyeon: ์ง„์งœ...
Hyunwoo: ๋ฏธํ˜„์”จ, ์ง„์งœ๋กœ ๊ธฐ์–ต ์•ˆ ๋‚˜์š”? ๋ฏธํ˜„์”จ๊ฐ€ ๊ฐ€๋ฅด์ณ ์ฃผ์…จ์ž–์•„์š”.
Mihyeon: ์˜ˆ๋ฌธ์ด์—์š”, ์˜ˆ๋ฌธ.
Junsu: So she said, she did learn but she didnโ€™t remember. Also Hyunwoo, can you give us another example?
Hyunwoo: Yeah actually there is a perfect example. A lot of our listeners are very active in the comments section and a lot of them ask questions like, is this sentence correct and often times, I answer ๋งž๊ธฐ๋Š” ๋งž๋Š”๋ฐ ์ด๊ฒŒ ๋” ์ž์—ฐ์Šค๋Ÿฌ์›Œ์š” which means it is correct grammatically that is but this is more natural. So you can say, if something is correct, it is correct but youโ€™d rather say this way instead of saying ๋งž๋Š”๋ฐ you can say ๋งž๊ธฐ๋Š” ๋งž๋Š”๋ฐ. It means it is correct but so was that good enough?
Junsu: Yeah sure. I think the listeners that couldnโ€™t remember would be satisfied by now.
Hyunwoo: I hope so. Thatโ€™s the power of reviewing. And donโ€™t worry if you donโ€™t remember the past grammar points that we covered just like Mihyeon didnโ€™t. You know, you can always โ€“ sorry Mihyeon. You know you can always listen to the lessons again or you can go to the learning center and use the grammar bank to view all the grammar points that were introduced so far in our lessons to check how much you have learned and if you choose a specific grammar point, there is a section that introduces all the lessons that used that grammar point or introduced that grammar point in them. So if you go to the learning center, you can check out the grammar points first and then find some specific lessons that are related to the grammar points. So just like Junsu introduced, we are going to learn how to say, as soon as you do something or as soon as something happens.
Hyunwoo: So okay letโ€™s listen in.

POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Mihyeon: ์Œ...๋ฏผ์ˆ˜๊ฐ€ ์ˆ˜์ƒํ•œ๋ฐ์š”?
Junsu: Something smells a bit fishy. I think Minsu is avoiding something.
Hyunwoo: Yeah and Jeongho and Mihyeon are wondering the same thing but they are not talking that much about Minsu anymore. They are talking about what they are going to do as soon as they get home and how do you say as soon as you do something in Korean?
Mihyeon: ๋ญ๋ญ ํ•˜์ž๋งˆ์ž
Junsu: And we are going to cover this in the grammar point later on but for now what Mihyeon said was, the verb ํ•˜๋‹ค plus ์ž๋งˆ์ž.
Hyunwoo: Thatโ€™s right. ํ•˜์ž๋งˆ์ž. ๋„ค, ๋ฏธํ˜„์”จ, so what do you do as soon as you get home from work?
Mihyeon: ๋„ค, ์ €๋Š” ์ง‘์— ๊ฐ€์ž๋งˆ์ž ์ปดํ“จํ„ฐ๋ฅผ ๋จผ์ € ์ผœ์š”.
Junsu: So what do you do as soon as the computer is on?
Mihyeon: ์ปดํ“จํ„ฐ๋ฅผ ์ผœ์ž๋งˆ์ž ๋‰ด์Šค๋ฅผ ์ฝ์–ด์š”.
Junsu: So what do you do as soon as you are done with reading the news?
Mihyeon: ๋„ค, ์ €๋… ์‹์‚ฌ๋ฅผ ์ค€๋น„ํ•ด์š”.
Hyunwoo: So I hope our listeners figured from the conversation between Mihyeon and Junsu that Mihyeon kept using the grammar pattern ์ž๋งˆ์ž at the end of her verbs and we are going to cover the construction and the grammar points later on. Okay so letโ€™s go into todayโ€™s vocabulary.
VOCAB LIST
Hyunwoo: ๋ฏธํ˜„์”จ, ์ฒซ ๋ฒˆ์งธ ๋‹จ์–ด๋Š” ๋ญ์ฃ ?
Mihyeon: ์ธ์‚ฌํ•˜๋‹ค
Junsu: ์ธ์‚ฌํ•˜๋‹ค
Mihyeon: ์ธ์‚ฌํ•˜๋‹ค [slowly - broken down by syllable] ์ธ์‚ฌํ•˜๋‹ค [natural native speed]
Junsu: What does this word mean?
Mihyeon: ์•ˆ๋…•ํ•˜์„ธ์š”. ์•ˆ๋…•. ์ด๊ฒŒ ์ธ์‚ฌ์˜ˆ์š”. ๊ทธ๋ž˜์„œ ์ด๋Ÿฐ ๋ง์„ ํ•˜๋Š” ๊ฒƒ, ์ธ์‚ฌํ•˜๋‹ค์ž…๋‹ˆ๋‹ค.
Junsu: Yeah so it means to say hello or goodbye and the phrase that we mentioned just before ์–ด๋”” ๊ฐ€ is also a kind of ์ธ์‚ฌ which means greeting. So ์ธ์‚ฌํ•˜๋‹ค means to greet.
Mihyeon: ํ˜„์šฐ์”จ๋Š” ๊ฐ€๊ฒŒ ๊ฐ™์€๋ฐ ๊ฐ€๋ฉด ์ธ์‚ฌ ์ž˜ ํ•˜์„ธ์š”?
Junsu: Hyunwoo, do you greet people well when you go into stores?
Hyunwoo: Actually I do. ๊ทธ๋Ÿฐ๋ฐ even when they donโ€™t say anything to me like even when they donโ€™t even say ์•ˆ๋…•ํ•˜์„ธ์š”, ์–ด์„œ ์˜ค์„ธ์š” I say ์•ˆ๋…•ํ•˜์„ธ์š”. ๊ทธ๋ž˜์„œ ์ €๋Š” ์ธ์‚ฌ ์ž˜ ํ•˜๋Š” ๊ฒƒ ๊ฐ™์•„์š”.
Mihyeon: ๋„ค. ์ฐฉํ•œ ์–ด๋ฆฐ์ด๋„ค์š”.
Junsu: You are a good kid.
Hyunwoo: Thank you. ๊ทธ๋ฆฌ๊ณ  ๋‹ค์Œ ๋‹จ์–ด๋Š”์š”?
Mihyeon: ๋‹ค๋ฅด๋‹ค
Junsu: ๋‹ค๋ฅด๋‹ค
Mihyeon: ๋‹ค๋ฅด๋‹ค [slowly - broken down by syllable] ๋‹ค๋ฅด๋‹ค [natural native speed]
Junsu: ์ด๊ฑด ๋ฌด์Šจ ๋œป์ด์—์š”?
Mihyeon: ๊ฐ™์ง€ ์•Š๋‹ค๋ผ๋Š” ๋œป์ด์—์š”.
Junsu: Not the same. So it means to be different.
Hyunwoo: ๋„ค, ๋งž์•„์š”. ๋ฏธํ˜„์”จ, ์˜ˆ๋ฌธ ์ข€ ๋“ค์–ด ์ฃผ์‹œ๊ฒ ์–ด์š”?
Mihyeon: ์ค€์ˆ˜์”จํ•˜๊ณ  ์ €๋Š” ์„ฑ๊ฒฉ์ด ๋งŽ์ด ๋‹ฌ๋ผ์š”.
Junsu: Junsu and I have very different personalities.
Hyunwoo: And what else is different between you and Junsu? ๋˜ ๋ญ๊ฐ€ ๋‹ฌ๋ผ์š”?
Mihyeon: ์ค€์ˆ˜์”จํ•˜๊ณ  ์ €๋Š” ํ‚ค๊ฐ€ ๋‹ฌ๋ผ์š”.
Junsu: Yeah I am taller I wish. So Mihyeon and I are not of the same height.
Hyunwoo: Yeah Mihyeon is quite tall.
Junsu: And I am short?
Hyunwoo: I mean you are average but Mihyeon is tall right, taller than average.
Junsu: ๋๋‚˜๋‹ค
Mihyeon: ๋๋‚˜๋‹ค [slowly - broken down by syllable] ๋๋‚˜๋‹ค [natural native speed]
Junsu: And this word means to finish, to end. Could you give us some examples?
Mihyeon: ํ ...๊ทธ ๋‚จ์ž๋ž‘ ๋๋‚ฌ์–ด์š”.
Junsu: Ah I am done with him.
Mihyeon: ์šฐ๋ฆฌ ๋…น์Œ ๋๋‚˜๊ณ  ๋ง›์žˆ๋Š” ๊ฑฐ ๋จน์œผ๋Ÿฌ ๊ฐˆ๊นŒ์š”?
Junsu: Shall we go eat something good after we are done with the recording?
Hyunwoo: ๋„ค, ๋ฏธํ˜„์”จ, ๊ฐ€์š”. Junsu has got some work to do but we can go.
Junsu: Oh come on.
Hyunwoo: Junsu you just turned red. Is it because you are upset or is it because itโ€™s hot?
Junsu: A little bit of both but I think itโ€™s because I am a little bit more mad.
Hyunwoo: Well I was hoping that you would say itโ€™s just hot here and Mihyeon, whatโ€™s to be hot in Korean? Thatโ€™s the next word.
Mihyeon: ๋ฅ๋‹ค
Junsu: ๋ฅ๋‹ค
Mihyeon: ๋ฅ๋‹ค [slowly - broken down by syllable] ๋ฅ๋‹ค [natural native speed]
Junsu: Yeah and itโ€™s really hot in here.
Mihyeon: ์•„ ์ •๋ง ๋ฅ๋‹ค. ํ˜„์šฐ์”จ, ๋ฌธ ์—ด์–ด ์ฃผ์„ธ์š”!
Junsu: He is suffocating us. Help.
Hyunwoo: ์ œ๊ฐ€ ๋” ๋”์›Œ์š” ์ง€๊ธˆ. And if you have noticed ๋ฅ๋‹ค itโ€™s an irregular verb and we call this a ใ…‚ irregular verb because the verb stem ends in ใ…‚ but the ใ…‚ often drops and becomes something else when itโ€™s conjugated with other suffixes. So letโ€™s introduce some possible variations of this verb Mihyeon. How do you say because itโ€™s hot?
Mihyeon: ๋”์šฐ๋‹ˆ๊นŒ
Junsu: Although itโ€™s hot.
Mihyeon: ๋”์›Œ๋„ ๋˜๋Š” ๋ฅ์ง€๋งŒ.
Hyunwoo: It was hot.
Mihyeon: ๋”์› ์–ด์š”.
Hyunwoo: I think it will be hot.
Mihyeon: ๋”์šธ ๊ฒƒ ๊ฐ™์•„์š”.
Hyunwoo: Itโ€™s not hot.
Mihyeon: ์•ˆ ๋”์›Œ์š” ๋˜๋Š” ๋ฅ์ง€ ์•Š์•„์š”.
Hyunwoo: Okay I think thatโ€™s enough. ์˜ˆ, ๊ทธ๋ ‡์ง€๋งŒ ์šฐ๋ฆฌ๋Š” ์—ด์‹ฌํžˆ ์ˆ˜๊ณ ํ•˜๊ณ  ์žˆ์Šต๋‹ˆ๋‹ค. And thatโ€™s the next word.
Mihyeon: ์ˆ˜๊ณ ํ•˜๋‹ค
Junsu: ์ˆ˜๊ณ ํ•˜๋‹ค
Mihyeon: ์ˆ˜๊ณ ํ•˜๋‹ค [slowly - broken down by syllable] ์ˆ˜๊ณ ํ•˜๋‹ค [natural native speed]
Junsu: Come on.
Mihyeon: ๋นจ๋ฆฌ ๋…น์Œ์„ ๋๋ƒ…์‹œ๋‹ค.
Hyunwoo: ๋„ค. What does ์ˆ˜๊ณ ํ•˜๋‹ค mean Junsu?
Junsu: Literally it means to go through a lot of pain and put a lot of effort into but actually itโ€™s not used in this way. Itโ€™s just a way to express gratitude and support.
Hyunwoo: Exactly. So whenever we are done with recording, now we say to each other
Mihyeon: ์ˆ˜๊ณ ํ•˜์…จ์Šต๋‹ˆ๋‹ค.
Junsu: ์ˆ˜๊ณ ํ•˜์…จ์Šต๋‹ˆ๋‹ค.
Hyunwoo: Okay ๋ฏธํ˜„์”จ, ๋‹จ์–ด ์„ค๋ช… ์ˆ˜๊ณ ํ•˜์…จ๊ณ ์š”. ๋ฌธ๋ฒ• ํฌ์ธํŠธ๋ฅผ ๋ณผ๊นŒ์š”? Letโ€™s go into the grammar points of today.

Lesson focus

Junsu: We think you are probably quite familiar with this grammar point by now but letโ€™s look a bit more into the construction. So you take the verb stem and add ์ž๋งˆ์ž at the end of it. The tense is expressed in the verb that follows this construction. So itโ€™s quite simple.
Hyunwoo: So whatever you want to say, look up the word in the dictionary, take the verb stem and add ์ž๋งˆ์ž and it becomes as soon as you do something, as soon as somebody does something or as soon as something happens. ์˜ค๋Š˜ ๋Œ€ํ™”์—์„œ๋Š” ์–ด๋–ป๊ฒŒ ์“ฐ์˜€์ฃ , ๋ฏธํ˜„์”จ? How was it used in todayโ€™s dialogue?
Mihyeon: ์ •ํ˜ธ์”จ๊ฐ€ ์ด์•ผ๊ธฐํ–ˆ์–ด์š”. ๋ณด์ž๋งˆ์ž, ๊ทธ๋ƒฅ ์ธ์‚ฌํ•˜๊ณ  ๋‹ค๋ฅธ ๋ฐ๋กœ ๊ฐ”์–ด.
Junsu: As soon as he saw me, he just said hi and went somewhere else.
Mihyeon: ๋ฏธํ˜„์”จ๊ฐ€ ์ด์•ผ๊ธฐํ–ˆ๋„ค์š”. ์ง‘์— ๊ฐ€์ž๋งˆ์ž ์•„๋ฅด๋ฐ”์ดํŠธ ๊ฐ€์•ผ ๋ผ.
Junsu: I have to go to my part time job as soon as I get home.
Mihyeon: ๋˜ ์ •ํ˜ธ์”จ๊ฐ€ ๋‚œ ์ง‘์— ๊ฐ€์ž๋งˆ์ž ์ƒค์›Œ๋ถ€ํ„ฐ ํ•ด์•ผ๊ฒ ๋‹ค๋ผ๊ณ  ์ด์•ผ๊ธฐํ–ˆ์–ด์š”.
Junsu: I am going to take a shower as soon as I get home.
Hyunwoo: Okay so letโ€™s look at some more examples. For example, how do you say, I fell asleep as soon as I closed my eyes. Thatโ€™s me these days.
Mihyeon: ๋ˆˆ์„ ๊ฐ์ž๋งˆ์ž ์ž ๋“ค์—ˆ์–ด์š”. ํ˜„์šฐ์”จ, ์š”์ฆ˜ ๋ˆˆ์„ ๊ฐ์ž๋งˆ์ž ์ž ์ด ๋“œ์‹ ๋‹ค๊ณ ์š”?
Hyunwoo: Yeah these days, after I close my eyes, I fall asleep within 5 seconds I think. ๊ทธ๋Ÿฌ๋‹ˆ๊นŒ ๋ˆˆ์„ ๊ฐ์ž๋งˆ์ž ์ž ๋“ ๋‹ค๊ณ  ํ•  ์ˆ˜ ์žˆ์ฃ .
Mihyeon: ์ง„์งœ ๋ˆˆ ๊ฐ์ž๋งˆ์ž ๋ฐ”๋กœ ์ฃผ๋ฌด์‹œ๋„ค์š”.
Hyunwoo: ๋„ค.
Mihyeon: ๋ถ€๋Ÿฌ์›Œ์š”.
Junsu: ์–ด, ์ €๋Š” ๋ˆ•์ž๋งˆ์ž ์ž ๋“ค์–ด์š”.
Hyunwoo: So Junsu falls asleep as soon as she lies down. Thatโ€™s better than me.
Junsu: A bit faster.
Hyunwoo: Yeah about 4 seconds faster.
Mihyeon: ์ €๋„ ๋นจ๋ฆฌ ํ•˜๋Š” ๊ฑฐ ์žˆ์–ด์š”.
Hyunwoo: ๋ญ”๋ฐ์š”?
Mihyeon: ์ €๋Š” ์ปคํ”ผ๋ฅผ ์•„์ฃผ ์ข‹์•„ํ•˜๊ฑฐ๋“ ์š”. ๊ทธ๋ž˜์„œ ๋ฐฅ์„ ๋จน์ž๋งˆ์ž ์ปคํ”ผ๋ฅผ ๋งˆ์…”์š”.
Junsu: Oh I donโ€™t drink coffee as soon as I finish eating but instead, I eat ice cream.
Hyunwoo: Are we really going to go somewhere and eat something good as soon as we finish recording ๋๋‚˜์ž๋งˆ์ž ๋ง›์žˆ๋Š” ๊ฑฐ ๋จน์œผ๋Ÿฌ ๊ฐˆ ๊ฑฐ์˜ˆ์š”?
Mihyeon: ๋„ค. ์•„๊นŒ ๊ฐ„๋‹ค๊ณ  ์•ฝ์†ํ•˜์…จ์ž–์•„์š”.

Outro

Hyunwoo: Okay, thank you Mihyeon and Junsu for the great lesson and we will see you next time.
Mihyeon: ์—ฌ๋Ÿฌ๋ถ„, ์ˆ˜๊ณ ํ•˜์…จ์Šต๋‹ˆ๋‹ค.
