Keith: 내가 쏠게. That’s a little bit slang right?
Seol: 맞아요. 근데 사람들이 다 쏜다고 말하니까 써도 괜찮아요.
Hyunwoo: 30대, 40대 까지는. 50대 넘어가면 좀 안 쓰죠?
Keith: So only people in their twenties maybe in their 30s, maybe in their 40s.
Hyunwoo: Maybe.
Keith: But once you are in the 50s, 안 써요?
Hyunwoo: 요즘에는 아직은 잘 안 써요. 그런데 앞으로는 더 많이 쓸지도 모르겠어요.

Hyunwoo: 지혜가 소연에게 밥을 먹으러 가자고 하고 있습니다.
Keith: 밥 먹으러 가자
Hyunwoo: 네, 밥을 먹으러, 밥을 먹기 위해서 가자.
Keith: 그리고 이 grammar point는 전에 나왔죠?
Seol: 네. 책을 받으러 오다, 공부하러 도서관에 가다.
Hyunwoo: 지갑을 찾으러 왔어요. 기억나세요?
Seol: 네. 무엇무엇 러/으러 오다/가다.
Keith: Go for the reason of, come for the reason of verb. 지혜는 뭘 먹고 싶어 하죠?
Seol: 지혜는 스파게티를 먹고 싶어 하는데요, 소연은 아마 다른 걸 먹고 싶어 하는 거 같아요.

Hyunwoo: 아직 모르겠어요. 대화를 한 번 들어봐야 될 것 같은데요?

Hyunwoo: 아 소연은 정말 검소한데요?
Keith: She is so thrifty.
Hyunwoo: 그렇지 않아요?
Keith: She is so cheap.
Hyunwoo: 그래도 검소하고 좋은 것 같아요. 그런데 대화를 들어 보니까 소연이 왜 스파게티 집에 안 가려고 했는지 알 수 있어요.
Seol: 왜요?
Hyunwoo: 한국에서는 스파게티가 비싸니까요. 매일매일 비싼 밥을 먹으면서 돈을 어떻게 모으겠어요?
Keith: Well how much is Spaghetti in Korea around?
Hyunwoo: 최소한
Seol: 7,000원?
Keith: Really?
Seol: 비싸면 15,000원?
Hyunwoo: 음 15,000원
Keith: 그렇게 비싸지 않은데요? It’s not that expensive.
Seol: 어...싼 데도 있고 비싼 데도 있는데요, 비싼 스파게티 집은 15,000원 20,000원 까지도 해요.
Keith: 저는 옛날에 김밥 집에 갔는데요, 그 뭐 김밥천국, 김밥나라 그런 데들 있잖아요.
Hyunwoo: 네
Keith: 그런데 거기도 스파게티 있었어요.
Seol: 어, 정말요?
Keith: Yeah and it was pretty cheap. It was like 4,000원.
Hyunwoo: 아...
Keith: 4000 won.
Hyunwoo: 그런데 김밥천국에 가서 스파게티를 먹는 사람이 없죠?
Keith: Yeah. You don’t really go to 김밥 집 to eat some spaghetti but yeah sometimes I was in the mood.
Hyunwoo: Was it good? 맛있었어요?
Keith: 음...별로...
Seol: 봐요. 스파게티는 맛있는 스파게티 전문점에서 먹어야 돼요.
Hyunwoo: 그리고 그렇게 먹으려면 7,000원, 8,000원, 10,000원 정도 들죠?
Seol: 저처럼 가난한 학생들한테는 스파게티는 가끔 먹는 음식이에요.
Hyunwoo: 그럼 설씨도 학생 식당에 자주 가세요?
Seol: 꼭 그렇지는 않아요.

Keith: Okay. So let’s take a deeper look into the vocabulary words. 더 자세하게 말해 봅시다.
Hyunwoo: 우선 식당부터 볼까요?
Keith: Okay. So and what we are talking about before 우리 전에 얘기했던 거는 학생 식당이였죠?
Hyunwoo: 네, 학생 식당.
Keith: And that can be broken down into two words.
Seol: 학생
Keith: Student
Seol: 식당
Keith: Restaurant and as you can probably guess, it’s a cafeteria, a school cafeteria 거의 다 학교에 있죠?
Seol: 학교마다 학생 식당은 있는데요, 모든 학생들이 다 학생 식당에서 먹는 건 아니에요.
Keith: 설처럼
Seol: 네. 왜냐하면
Keith: High maintenance
Seol: Not really. 왜냐하면 학생 식당은 메뉴가 한정되어 있거든요. 그래서 메뉴가 그렇게 많지 않아요. 맛있는 거 먹고 싶을 땐 학교 밖으로 나가서 학교 근처에 있는 식당에 가요.
Keith: So you can only get two meals at the cafeteria?
Seol: 메뉴가 2개인 경우가 많아요. 오늘의 메뉴 2개, 내일의 메뉴 2개 이런 식으로. 예를 들어서 저는 카레를 별로 안 좋아하는데 오늘 학생 식당 메뉴가 카레이면 저 같은 경우는 밖에 나가서 먹어요.
Keith: So 양식도 있어요?
Seol: 네, 돈까스도 나오고요.
Keith: 돈까스는... That’s Japanese right?
Seol: But it’s kind of pork cutlet.
Keith: Japanese
Seol: We argue. We say that it’s pork cutlet.
Keith: Okay well 양식 for those of you that don’t know is western food. 스테이크 같은 거도 있어요?
Hyunwoo: 학생 식당에서 스테이크는 조금...
Seol: 스테이크는 비싸잖아요. 학생 식당은 항상 싸요. 2,500원, 3,000원 정도.
Hyunwoo: 그래서 학생 식당에서 스파게티도 볼 수 없죠.
Seol: 네, 보통은 밥 종류로 나오죠. 싸고 배부르게 먹을 수 있는 그런 밥, 김치찌개, 된장찌개 같은 거요.
Keith: So if you are traveling through Korea, you are on a budget, stop by one of these 학생 식당s.
Seol: Yeah.
Keith/Hyunwoo: These cafeterias.
Seol: Yeah that’s a good strategy.
Keith: You can probably get pretty full on these. It’s pretty cheap.
Seol: Yeah.
Keith: 2,000원, 그 정도죠?
Hyunwoo: 2,000원에서 2,500원 그 정도.
Keith: It’s cheap.
Hyunwoo: 그런데 식당, 레스토랑, 밥 집 여러가지 표현들이 있는데 설씨는 어떤 표현을 가장 많이 쓰세요?
Seol: 식당이요.
Hyunwoo: 식당. Keith는요?
Keith: 아마 집, 밥 집?
Hyunwoo: 밥 집. 저도 밥 집, 김밥 집, 라면 집 이런 집을 많이 쓰는 것 같아요.
Keith: 그래서 그 차이가 뭐예요? What’s the difference 집, 식당, 레스토랑?
Seol: 집, 밥 집, 김밥 집 같은 곳은 그 앞에 붙는 음식을 전문적으로 취급하는 집이에요.
Keith: So it’s a specialty house.
Seol: 삼겹살 집, 짜장면 집, 김밥 집처럼.
Keith: 스테이크 집도 있죠?
Seol: 네, 있어요.
Keith: So a steakhouse kind of
Seol: 네
Keith: So yeah it’s the same house I guess from steakhouse, gimbap house
Seol: Spaghetti house.
Keith: Spaghetti house yeah. Okay 식당은요?
Seol: 식당은 일반적으로 레스토랑을 지칭하는 말이니까 굉장히 범위가 넓게 쓰일 수 있어요. 김밥 집도 식당이고 비싼 호텔 레스토랑도 식당이에요.
Keith: So it’s just a restaurant, general, general restaurant. So what’s the difference between 식당 and the Koreanized English word restaurant 레스토랑?
Seol: 글쎄요. 레스토랑은 뭔가 비싼 느낌이 오지 않아요?
Hyunwoo: 예. 레스토랑에 가자 그러면 헉 돈을 얼마를 준비해야 되지?
Seol: 그렇죠. 왠지 스테이크를 먹거나 아니면 비싼 프랑스 요리를 먹거나 이럴 때 가는 곳이 레스토랑 이런 느낌이에요.
Hyunwoo: 항상 그런 건 아니겠지만 한국 사람들에게는 레스토랑 하면 양식, 와인 그런거죠.
Seol: 네
Hyunwoo: 네
Keith: So if I say hey let’s go to a restaurant, then 그렇게 말하면 뭐 어떤 느낌이 들어요?
Seol: 저는 호텔가서 스테이크 먹는 그런 느낌 들어요.
Keith: Steak, wine, nice dress
Seol: 맞아요, 맞아요.
Keith: Tie. Okay all right. Our next word we have
Hyunwoo: 모으다
Keith: To gather 이거는 많이 들어요. 우리 식구들, 식구들 모였을 때. Like when we gather, my family, my family members, my extended family members, ah it’s time to eat 빨리 모아.
Seol: Oh!
Keith/Hyunwoo: Right. Hurry up and gather everybody. Get everyone over here. I hear that a lot in my extended family when we have special occasions together and in the same way 오늘의 대화에는 어떻게 나왔어요?
Hyunwoo: 돈을 모으다
Keith: To gather money.
Hyunwoo: 네. Keith는 돈을 어떻게 모으세요?
Keith: 저는 돈을 안 모아요. 돈이 없어요. I don’t gather my money which means to save pretty much.
Hyunwoo: 돼지 저금통에 모으기도 하세요?
Keith: 그것도 안 해요.
Hyunwoo: 설씨는 돼지 저금통 있어요?
Seol: 없어요.
Keith: And can we go over that word again?
Hyunwoo: 돼지 저금통
Keith: Piggybank.
Hyunwoo: 저는 돼지 저금통 좋아해서 집에 항상 돼지 저금통이 있어요.
Seol: 저는 모을 돈이 없어요. Keith처럼.
Keith: 그럼 현우씨는 돈을 많이 모았어요? Did you save a lot of money with your piggybanks?
Hyunwoo: 아...넘어갑시다. Next.
Keith: All right. Our next word we have is
Seol: 최소한
Keith: At least, at the minimum. In what context are you most likely going to be using this phrase 돈에 대해서 얘기할 때?
Seol: 네, 그럴 때도 많이 쓰여요.
Keith: When you are talking about money?
Hyunwoo: 그리고 시간
Keith: Umm that’d be amount of time.
Hyunwoo: 네. 저희 부모님을 만나러 가려면 최소한 4시간은 걸립니다.
Keith: It takes at least 4 hours to get to 광주.
Hyunwoo: 네, 광주까지. 서울에서 광주까지 최소한 4시간.
Seol: 그리고 영화를 보려면 최소한 8,000원은 필요해요.
Keith: If you want to watch a movie, you need at least 8000 won and what’s the opposite of that 그 반대는 뭐예요?
Seol: 최대한
Keith: At the most, at the maximum. And the same thing, you are talking about money and time.
Hyunwoo: 네, 그렇죠.
Keith: 예문 좀 들어 보세요.
Seol: 최대한 빨리 올게요.
Keith: I will come as early as I can. And in this context, it’s also referring to time but there is no real set amount of time in there. You are just saying at the maximum, at the fastest.
Seol: 최대한 빨리 갈게요.
Keith: So 최대한 빨리 갈게요. The maximum fast I will go. I will come the fastest as I can. All right 그 다음에는?
Hyunwoo: 용돈
Keith: 이 말은 좀 재밌어요.
Seol: 어 정말?
Keith: Well I was teaching English to Korean kids and the rule was no Korean at all. So I couldn’t speak to them in Korean so but they wanted to say allowance. So they kept saying dragon money. Dragon money instead of allowance because they didn’t know the word 그 말을 몰랐으니까 but that’s not the actual 한자 in there right?
Seol: No, no.
Hyunwoo: A different 한자 with the same pronunciation.
Keith: Same pronunciation 한자가 뭐예요 이 안에서?
Hyunwoo: 쓰다
Keith: 쓰다, 용?
Hyunwoo: 네
Keith: 용 as in 이용하다?
Hyunwoo: 이용하다, 사용하다
Keith: To use and 돈 is
Hyunwoo: 한글
Keith: Oh so 돈, 한자는 없어요?
Hyunwoo: 돈은 한자가 아니에요.
Keith: Ah okay.
Hyunwoo: 설씨는 언제까지 용돈 받았어요?
Seol: 어...작년 3월까지요.
Keith: Last year. Okay.
Hyunwoo: Keith는 언제까지 용돈 받았어요?
Keith: 아 글쎄요. 아마 고등학교 졸업할 때까지 받았어요.
Seol: 현우씨는요?
Hyunwoo: 저도 고등학교 때까지.
Keith: All right. So let’s move on to our next word. Our next word is
Hyunwoo: 대신
Keith: Instead of in lieu of and it can also mean in return just like the example in today’s conversation.
Seol: 나 어제 용돈 받았어. 내가 밥 살게. 대신에 너 아르바이트 월급 받으면 니가 사! 알았지?
Keith: I will buy you food but in return, you buy me food when you get your money and actually she said 월급 and that’s our next word. The 한자 behind this is really simple. What’s the first one?
Seol: 월
Keith: Month.
Seol: 급
Keith: Wage. Monthly wage. And this is reflective of how people get paid in Korea. Most of the time it’s monthly.
Hyunwoo: 네, 보통은 한 달에 한 번씩 받는데 일주일에 한 번씩 받을 때는 뭐라고 하죠?
Seol: 주급
Hyunwoo: 그렇죠. 하루에 한 번 씩 받을 때는?
Seol: 일급
Hyunwoo: 맞아요. 그래서 주급 할 때는 주는 일주일, 그리고 일급 할 때 일은 하루하루를 뜻 하는 거죠.
Seol: 그러면 weekly wage랑 daily wage가 되는 거예요?
Hyunwoo: 그렇죠.
Seol: 한문을 많이 알면 단어 양이 늘어나겠네요.
Hyunwoo: 네
Keith: And that’s exactly why we include 한자 in the PDFs. So remember to check that out, study on your own and your vocabulary will improve exponentially. All right so let’s move on to our grammar point. Our first grammar point we have is
Seol: 야 되다
Keith: Have to. Now this is a grammatical structure which adds on to verbs and it can be translated as have to or must. So must verb. Have to verb but here the verb comes before and then you add
Seol: 야 되다
Keith: And the construction of this is fairly simple. You take the verb stem, you conjugate it into the 아/어/여 conjugation and then add 야 되다 and the 되다 which originally means to become but it’s used as a part of the structure that verb there is what inflects politeness level, tense and mood and anything else. Okay let’s have a couple of examples.
Hyunwoo: 나 일해야 돼.
Keith: I have to work.
Hyunwoo: 나 공부해야 돼.
Keith: I have to study. Now let’s break it down really quick.
Hyunwoo: 일해야 돼.
Keith: Okay what’s the original verb there?
Hyunwoo: 일하다
Keith: To work. So we take the verb stem
Hyunwoo: 일하
Keith: And then we add the 여 conjugation because it’s a 하다 verb.
Hyunwoo: 일해
Keith: And then we add the grammatical construction
Hyunwoo: 야 되다
Keith: So now it becomes
Hyunwoo: 일해야 되다
Keith: I have to work and this example was conjugated into the simple present tense intimate politeness level.
Hyunwoo: 일해야 돼
Keith: And to study, same thing because it’s a 하다 verb. So 공부하 then we add on 공부해야 돼. So let’s have another example.
Seol: 나 졸려서 자야 돼.
Keith: I have to sleep because I am sleepy. Let’s break it down really quickly.
Seol: 자야 돼
Keith: Have to sleep. What’s the root verb here?
Seol: 자다
Keith: To sleep and now we have
Seol: 자
Keith: And we add on a 아 conjugation because it’s a verb that has the vowel ㅏ but since it is to us, they combine into one
Seol: 자
Keith: And then we add the grammatical construction
Seol: 자야 되다
Keith: To have to sleep. All right 근데 원래 되다는 become의 의미인데... What about over here?
Hyunwoo: 여기서는 become이 아니라 work out smoothly 아니면 everything goes fine 이렇게 이런 의미로 쓰였죠. 그래서 보통 한국어에서 되다라는 의미가 되지 않다 즉 안되다라고 하면 not good이라던가 그런 뜻으로 많이 쓰여요.
Keith: And in addition to this 야 돼 I also hear 야 해 as well. What’s the difference?
Hyunwoo: There is no difference.
Keith: It’s the same thing right?
Hyunwoo: 예, 똑같아요.
Keith: So instead of 야 되다 it can also be 야 하다. So let’s have those same exact examples with 하다.
Hyunwoo: 나 일해야 돼. 나 일해야 해.
Keith: I have to work, same meaning.
Seol: 나 공부해야 돼.
Keith: I have to study.
Seol: 나 공부해야 해.
Keith: I have to study, same thing.
Hyunwoo: 나 자야 돼.
Keith: I have to sleep.
Hyunwoo: 나 자야 해.
Keith: Same thing.
Hyunwoo: 그런데 저는 자야 돼를 더 많이 써요. 설씨는 어때요?
Seol: 저도요.
Hyunwoo: 네. 글을 쓸 때는 자야 해요, 가야 해요 이렇게 많이 쓰는데 말할 때는 돼요를 많이 쓰는 것 같아요.
Keith: So it’s the same exact thing. It’s just maybe a matter of personal preference.
Hyunwoo: 그렇죠. 개인에 따라 다른 것 같아요.
Keith: 저도 그래요. 돼 많이 써요.
Hyunwoo: 돼 그렇죠. 왜냐면 야 해, 뭐뭐해야 해 발음하기 힘들잖아요. 그렇지 않아요?
Seol: 맞아요. 예를 들어서 ‘어, 나 지금 공부해야 해.’ 하면 해 발음이 두 개가 나오잖아요.
Hyunwoo: 해야 해 해야 해. 해야 돼 하면 더 쉽죠?
Seol: 네.
