์๋ค. |
Hyunwoo: ์ฐ์ ์๋น๋ถํฐ ๋ณผ๊น์? |
Keith: Okay. So and what we are talking about before ์ฐ๋ฆฌ ์ ์ ์๊ธฐํ๋ ๊ฑฐ๋ ํ์ ์๋น์ด์์ฃ ? |
Hyunwoo: ๋ค, ํ์ ์๋น. |
Keith: And that can be broken down into two words. |
Seol: ํ์ |
Keith: Student |
Seol: ์๋น |
Keith: Restaurant and as you can probably guess, itโs a cafeteria, a school cafeteria ๊ฑฐ์ ๋ค ํ๊ต์ ์์ฃ ? |
Seol: ํ๊ต๋ง๋ค ํ์ ์๋น์ ์๋๋ฐ์, ๋ชจ๋ ํ์๋ค์ด ๋ค ํ์ ์๋น์์ ๋จน๋ ๊ฑด ์๋์์. |
Keith: ์ค์ฒ๋ผ |

Seol: Yeah. |
Keith/Hyunwoo: These cafeterias. |
Seol: Yeah thatโs a good strategy. |
Keith: You can probably get pretty full on these. Itโs pretty cheap. |
Seol: Yeah. |
Keith: 2,000์, ๊ทธ ์ ๋์ฃ ? |
Hyunwoo: 2,000์์์ 2,500์ ๊ทธ ์ ๋. |

Keith: ์คํ
์ดํฌ ์ง๋ ์์ฃ ? |
Seol: ๋ค, ์์ด์. |
Keith: So a steakhouse kind of |
Seol: ๋ค |
Keith: So yeah itโs the same house I guess from steakhouse, gimbap house |
Seol: Spaghetti house. |
Keith: Spaghetti house yeah. Okay ์๋น์์? |
Seol: ์๋น์ ์ผ๋ฐ์ ์ผ๋ก ๋ ์คํ ๋์ ์ง์นญํ๋ ๋ง์ด๋๊น ๊ต์ฅํ ๋ฒ์๊ฐ ๋๊ฒ ์ฐ์ผ ์ ์์ด์. ๊น๋ฐฅ ์ง๋ ์๋น์ด๊ณ ๋น์ผ ํธํ

Keith: So itโs just a restaurant, general, general restaurant. So whatโs the difference between ์๋น and the Koreanized English word restaurant ๋ ์คํ ๋? |
Seol: ๊ธ์์. ๋ ์คํ ๋์ ๋ญ๊ฐ ๋น์ผ ๋๋์ด ์ค์ง ์์์? |
Hyunwoo: ์. ๋ ์คํ ๋์ ๊ฐ์ ๊ทธ๋ฌ๋ฉด ํ ๋์ ์ผ๋ง๋ฅผ ์ค๋นํด์ผ ๋์ง? |

Seol: ๋ค |
Hyunwoo: ๋ค |
Keith: So if I say hey letโs go to a restaurant, then ๊ทธ๋ ๊ฒ ๋งํ๋ฉด ๋ญ ์ด๋ค ๋๋์ด ๋ค์ด์? |
Seol: ์ ๋ ํธํ
๊ฐ์ ์คํ
์ดํฌ ๋จน๋ ๊ทธ๋ฐ ๋๋ ๋ค์ด์. |
Keith: Steak, wine, nice dress |
Seol: ๋ง์์, ๋ง์์. |
Keith: Tie. Okay all right. Our next word we have |
Hyunwoo: ๋ชจ์ผ๋ค |
Keith: To gather ์ด๊ฑฐ๋ ๋ง์ด ๋ค์ด์. ์ฐ๋ฆฌ ์๊ตฌ๋ค, ์๊ตฌ๋ค ๋ชจ์์ ๋. Like when we gather, my family, my family members, my extended family members, ah itโs time to eat ๋นจ๋ฆฌ ๋ชจ์. |
Seol: Oh! |
Keith/Hyunwoo: Right. Hurry up and gather everybody. Get everyone over here. I hear that a lot in my extended family when we have special occasions together and in the same way ์ค๋์ ๋ํ์๋ ์ด๋ป๊ฒ ๋์์ด์? |
Hyunwoo: ๋์ ๋ชจ์ผ๋ค |
Keith: To gather money. |
Hyunwoo: ๋ค. Keith๋ ๋์ ์ด๋ป๊ฒ ๋ชจ์ผ์ธ์? |
Keith: ์ ๋ ๋์ ์ ๋ชจ์์. ๋์ด ์์ด์. I donโt gather my money which means to save pretty much. |
Hyunwoo: ๋ผ์ง ์ ๊ธํต์ ๋ชจ์ผ๊ธฐ๋ ํ์ธ์? |
Keith: ๊ทธ๊ฒ๋ ์ ํด์. |
Hyunwoo: ์ค์จ๋ ๋ผ์ง ์ ๊ธํต ์์ด์? |
Seol: ์์ด์. |
Keith: And can we go over that word again? |
Hyunwoo: ๋ผ์ง ์ ๊ธํต |
Keith: Piggybank. |
Hyunwoo: ์ ๋ ๋ผ์ง ์ ๊ธํต ์ข์ํด์ ์ง์ ํญ์ ๋ผ์ง ์ ๊ธํต์ด ์์ด์. |
Seol: ์ ๋ ๋ชจ์ ๋์ด ์์ด์. Keith์ฒ๋ผ. |
Keith: ๊ทธ๋ผ ํ์ฐ์จ๋ ๋์ ๋ง์ด ๋ชจ์์ด์? Did you save a lot of money with your piggybanks? |
Hyunwoo: ์...๋์ด๊ฐ์๋ค. Next. |
Keith: All right. Our next word we have is |
Seol: ์ต์ํ |
Keith: At least, at the minimum. In what context are you most likely going to be using this phrase ๋์ ๋ํด์ ์๊ธฐํ ๋? |
Seol: ๋ค, ๊ทธ๋ด ๋๋ ๋ง์ด ์ฐ์ฌ์. |
Keith: When you are talking about money? |
Hyunwoo: ๊ทธ๋ฆฌ๊ณ ์๊ฐ |
Keith: Umm thatโd be amount of time. |
Hyunwoo: ๋ค. ์ ํฌ ๋ถ๋ชจ๋์ ๋ง๋๋ฌ ๊ฐ๋ ค๋ฉด ์ต์ํ 4์๊ฐ์ ๊ฑธ๋ฆฝ๋๋ค. |
Keith: It takes at least 4 hours to get to ๊ด์ฃผ. |
Hyunwoo: ๋ค, ๊ด์ฃผ๊น์ง. ์์ธ์์ ๊ด์ฃผ๊น์ง ์ต์ํ 4์๊ฐ. |
Seol: ๊ทธ๋ฆฌ๊ณ ์ํ๋ฅผ ๋ณด๋ ค๋ฉด ์ต์ํ 8,000์์ ํ์ํด์. |
Keith: If you want to watch a movie, you need at least 8000 won and whatโs the opposite of that ๊ทธ ๋ฐ๋๋ ๋ญ์์? |
Seol: ์ต๋ํ |
Keith: At the most, at the maximum. And the same thing, you are talking about money and time. |
Hyunwoo: ๋ค, ๊ทธ๋ ์ฃ . |
Keith: ์๋ฌธ ์ข ๋ค์ด ๋ณด์ธ์. |
Seol: ์ต๋ํ ๋นจ๋ฆฌ ์ฌ๊ฒ์. |
Keith: I will come as early as I can. And in this context, itโs also referring to time but there is no real set amount of time in there. You are just saying at the maximum, at the fastest. |
Seol: ์ต๋ํ ๋นจ๋ฆฌ ๊ฐ๊ฒ์. |
Keith: So ์ต๋ํ ๋นจ๋ฆฌ ๊ฐ๊ฒ์. The maximum fast I will go. I will come the fastest as I can. All right ๊ทธ ๋ค์์๋? |
Hyunwoo: ์ฉ๋ |
Keith: ์ด ๋ง์ ์ข ์ฌ๋ฐ์ด์. |
Seol: ์ด ์ ๋ง? |
Keith: Well I was teaching English to Korean kids and the rule was no Korean at all. So I couldnโt speak to them in Korean so but they wanted to say allowance. So they kept saying dragon money. Dragon money instead of allowance because they didnโt know the word ๊ทธ ๋ง์ ๋ชฐ๋์ผ๋๊น but thatโs not the actual ํ์ in there right? |
Seol: No, no. |
Hyunwoo: A different ํ์ with the same pronunciation. |
Keith: Same pronunciation ํ์๊ฐ ๋ญ์์ ์ด ์์์? |
Hyunwoo: ์ฐ๋ค |
Keith: ์ฐ๋ค, ์ฉ? |
Hyunwoo: ๋ค |
Keith: ์ฉ as in ์ด์ฉํ๋ค? |
Hyunwoo: ์ด์ฉํ๋ค, ์ฌ์ฉํ๋ค |
Keith: To use and ๋ is |
Hyunwoo: ํ๊ธ |
Keith: Oh so ๋, ํ์๋ ์์ด์? |
Hyunwoo: ๋์ ํ์๊ฐ ์๋์์. |
Keith: Ah okay. |
Hyunwoo: ์ค์จ๋ ์ธ์ ๊น์ง ์ฉ๋ ๋ฐ์์ด์? |
Seol: ์ด...์๋
3์๊น์ง์. |
Keith: Last year. Okay. |
Hyunwoo: Keith๋ ์ธ์ ๊น์ง ์ฉ๋ ๋ฐ์์ด์? |
Keith: ์ ๊ธ์์. ์๋ง ๊ณ ๋ฑํ๊ต ์กธ์
ํ ๋๊น์ง ๋ฐ์์ด์. |
Seol: ํ์ฐ์จ๋์? |
Hyunwoo: ์ ๋ ๊ณ ๋ฑํ๊ต ๋๊น์ง. |
Keith: All right. So letโs move on to our next word. Our next word is |
Hyunwoo: ๋์ |
Keith: Instead of in lieu of and it can also mean in return just like the example in todayโs conversation. |
Seol: ๋ ์ด์ ์ฉ๋ ๋ฐ์์ด. ๋ด๊ฐ ๋ฐฅ ์ด๊ฒ. ๋์ ์ ๋ ์๋ฅด๋ฐ์ดํธ ์๊ธ ๋ฐ์ผ๋ฉด ๋๊ฐ ์ฌ! ์์์ง? |
Keith: I will buy you food but in return, you buy me food when you get your money and actually she said ์๊ธ and thatโs our next word. The ํ์ behind this is really simple. Whatโs the first one? |
Seol: ์ |
Keith: Month. |
Seol: ๊ธ |
Keith: Wage. Monthly wage. And this is reflective of how people get paid in Korea. Most of the time itโs monthly. |
Hyunwoo: ๋ค, ๋ณดํต์ ํ ๋ฌ์ ํ ๋ฒ์ฉ ๋ฐ๋๋ฐ ์ผ์ฃผ์ผ์ ํ ๋ฒ์ฉ ๋ฐ์ ๋๋ ๋ญ๋ผ๊ณ ํ์ฃ ? |
Seol: ์ฃผ๊ธ |
Hyunwoo: ๊ทธ๋ ์ฃ . ํ๋ฃจ์ ํ ๋ฒ ์ฉ ๋ฐ์ ๋๋? |
Seol:
Hyunwoo: ๊ทธ๋ ์ฃ . |
Seol: ํ๋ฌธ์ ๋ง์ด ์๋ฉด ๋จ์ด ์์ด ๋์ด๋๊ฒ ๋ค์. |
Hyunwoo: ๋ค |
Keith: And thatโs exactly why we include ํ์ in the PDFs. So remember to check that out, study on your own and your vocabulary will improve exponentially. All right so letโs move on to our grammar point. Our first grammar point we have is |
Lesson focus
|
Seol: ์ผ ๋๋ค |
Keith: Have to. Now this is a grammatical structure which adds on to verbs and it can be translated as have to or must. So must verb. Have to verb but here the verb comes before and then you add |
Seol: ์ผ ๋๋ค |
Keith: And the construction of this is fairly simple. You take the verb stem, you conjugate it into the ์/์ด/์ฌ conjugation and then add ์ผ ๋๋ค and the ๋๋ค which originally means to become but itโs used as a part of the structure that verb there is what inflects politeness level, tense and mood and anything else. Okay letโs have a couple of examples. |
Hyunwoo: ๋ ์ผํด์ผ ๋ผ. |
Keith: I have to work. |
Hyunwoo: ๋ ๊ณต๋ถํด์ผ ๋ผ. |
Keith: I have to study. Now letโs break it down really quick. |
Hyunwoo: ์ผํด์ผ ๋ผ. |
Keith: Okay whatโs the original verb there? |
Hyunwoo: ์ผํ๋ค |
Keith: To work. So we take the verb stem |
Hyunwoo: ์ผํ |
Keith: And then we add the ์ฌ conjugation because itโs a ํ๋ค verb. |
Hyunwoo: ์ผํด |
Keith: And then we add the grammatical construction |
Hyunwoo: ์ผ ๋๋ค |
Keith: So now it becomes |
Hyunwoo: ์ผํด์ผ ๋๋ค |
Keith: I have to work and this example was conjugated into the simple present tense intimate politeness level. |
Hyunwoo: ์ผํด์ผ ๋ผ |
Keith: And to study, same thing because itโs a ํ๋ค verb. So ๊ณต๋ถํ then we add on ๊ณต๋ถํด์ผ ๋ผ. So letโs have another example. |
Seol: ๋ ์กธ๋ ค์ ์์ผ ๋ผ. |
Keith: I have to sleep because I am sleepy. Letโs break it down really quickly. |
Seol: ์์ผ ๋ผ |
Keith: Have to sleep. Whatโs the root verb here? |
Seol: ์๋ค |
Keith: To sleep and now we have |
Seol: ์ |
Keith: And we add on a ์ conjugation because itโs a verb that has the vowel ใ
but since it is to us, they combine into one |
Seol: ์ |
Keith: And then we add the grammatical construction |
Seol: ์์ผ ๋๋ค |
Keith: To have to sleep. All right ๊ทผ๋ฐ ์๋ ๋๋ค๋ become์ ์๋ฏธ์ธ๋ฐ... What about over here? |
Hyunwoo: ์ฌ๊ธฐ์๋ become์ด ์๋๋ผ work out smoothly ์๋๋ฉด everything goes fine ์ด๋ ๊ฒ ์ด๋ฐ ์๋ฏธ๋ก ์ฐ์์ฃ . ๊ทธ๋์ ๋ณดํต ํ๊ตญ์ด์์ ๋๋ค๋ผ๋ ์๋ฏธ๊ฐ ๋์ง ์๋ค ์ฆ ์๋๋ค๋ผ๊ณ ํ๋ฉด not good์ด๋ผ๋๊ฐ ๊ทธ๋ฐ ๋ป์ผ๋ก ๋ง์ด ์ฐ์ฌ์. |
Keith: And in addition to this ์ผ ๋ผ I also hear ์ผ ํด as well. Whatโs the difference? |
Hyunwoo: There is no difference. |
Keith: Itโs the same thing right? |
Hyunwoo: ์, ๋๊ฐ์์. |
Keith: So instead of ์ผ ๋๋ค it can also be ์ผ ํ๋ค. So letโs have those same exact examples with ํ๋ค. |
Hyunwoo: ๋ ์ผํด์ผ ๋ผ. ๋ ์ผํด์ผ ํด. |
Keith: I have to work, same meaning. |
Seol: ๋ ๊ณต๋ถํด์ผ ๋ผ. |
Keith: I have to study. |
Seol: ๋ ๊ณต๋ถํด์ผ ํด. |
Keith: I have to study, same thing. |
Hyunwoo: ๋ ์์ผ ๋ผ. |
Keith: I have to sleep. |
Hyunwoo: ๋ ์์ผ ํด. |
Keith: Same thing. |
Hyunwoo: ๊ทธ๋ฐ๋ฐ ์ ๋ ์์ผ ๋ผ๋ฅผ ๋ ๋ง์ด ์จ์. ์ค์จ๋ ์ด๋์? |
Seol: ์ ๋์. |
Hyunwoo: ๋ค. ๊ธ์ ์ธ ๋๋ ์์ผ ํด์, ๊ฐ์ผ ํด์ ์ด๋ ๊ฒ ๋ง์ด ์ฐ๋๋ฐ ๋งํ ๋๋ ๋ผ์๋ฅผ ๋ง์ด ์ฐ๋ ๊ฒ ๊ฐ์์. |
Keith: So itโs the same exact thing. Itโs just maybe a matter of personal preference. |
Seol: ๋ค. |
Keith: So if you are up for a challenge, a pronunciation challenge, go for the ํด์ผ ํด. |
Hyunwoo: ํด์ผ ํด. |
Outro
|
Keith: All right. So thatโs going to do for today. See you later. |
Hyunwoo: Bye bye |
Seol: Bye. |
