first syllable of 흰색

Hi ... annjeonghaseyo!

Ok I have been trying to learn some Korean, just for fun, for a week now. I started off with Hangul.

Today however I encountered the word 흰색, heen-sek, meaning "white", and I can't understand what is going on here. It is the first syllable. My issue is with the horizontal stroke under the ㅎ. To what letter does that stroke belong?

Hmmmm. Can it be part the semivowel that is sometimes transscribed as "ui"?

That is a good start - no pressure and you are definitely in the right place if you are looking for fun!;)

And your question can really be confusing and here are my thoughts below.

For the word 흰색, we could break down into these : ㅎ,ㅢ,ㄴ, ㅅ,ㅐ,ㄱ

So here, both of them have used the double vowels which means the two of each vowel are combined to make certain sound.

While ㅡ [eu, the mouth would look like this but to show the lower teeth more], and ㅣ[e], themselves could make a sound, by adding up, it sounds like [ui], starting off ㅡ sound then ㅣ. That is how it could make the sound 흰.

색 is exactly the same pattern!
