Question about "understanding"

I have a conjugation question...
I'm sure the answer is somewhere on this site...but I was thinking as I was sleeping...and this question just came up in my mind...


the verb, 알다

does it conjugate like this:

알아 informal, present
알아요 formal, present
압니다 formal/polite, present

what is:

알갰습니다

is this the honorific or formal/formal version? present tense?

I started hearing 압니다 in the drama "On Air"... and I realized that it was the present formal conjugation of 알다...

= I would know.

And yes. It's a formal sentence.

i hear it used a lot in situations where someone is asking you to do something, or telling you about a situation, and people say 알겠습니다 as a polite way of agreeing with the speaker or saying "i understand" or "i will do what you asked" (that's not what it means, but that is what it seems to imply). i hear it a lot when people are getting off the phone, too (:

Yes, you can use '알겠습니다' in place of 'I understand', will do', or 'I see'.

Its literal meaning is to be 'would know', but it is used that way.

3시에 보자. see you at 3. 알겠습니다' I will do.

다시 잘 써 보세요. write again and good 알겠습니다' I will

그렇게 하지마. don't do that 알겠습니다' No, I won't

이건 이렇게 하는거야. do like this 알겠습니다'I see

알 았 냐 ? do you understand? 알겠습니다' I understand.
정말로 아니? Do you really know? 정말로 알겠습니다' I really know.
