This pattern means like "noticed that" "I remember that" and is used to indicate the speaker's past experience

그 식당에서 먹었는데 아주 맛있더라(고요) I ate at that restaurant and I remember the food was delicious. I remember the food was delicious when I ate at that restaurant.

그거 뭐였더라? -What was that- I need to remember what I heard/saw before? (trying to recall something from memory -kind of talking to one's self)

닉 씨를 만나 본 적이 있나요? Have you ever met Nick?
네. 한국말을 아주 잘 하시더라고요 - Yes. I remember he speaks Korean very well.

Thanks Anne,

I just finished reading a chapter on that very subject, so it was still fresh in my mind.
